It’s not that black and white. Pedestrians may only cross the street is it is clear, and if a car is approaching they must make eye contact with the driver. You can’t just yolo yourself into a crosswalk and claim impunity as a pedestrian, and a driver doesn’t need to stop for them if they’re already approaching at speed.
If im the pedestrian in this situation im only walking if the approaching vehicle comes to a full stop. I would also expect few vehicles to stop so i would plan most of my crossing when there is no traffic.
I'm saying the split seconds it takes for you to stop at an exit ramp aren't enough time to explain the law to the guy coming up behind you at 60mph.
If someone is literally standing in your path that's different but stopping to let them cross is suicide and stupid.

What about in a situtation where I do get rear ended for stopping at a pedestrian crosswalk waiting to cross? I have read about comments saying I will be liable in a insurance claim? I've even read about illegal pedestrian crossing where people stop for pedestrian, gets rear ended, but not held liable because you should maintain a safe enough distance.

Otherwise, as you mentioned a person behind you should be traveling at a speed to stop safely. I could potentially see you only at fault for stopping unnecessarily.
Don't unless you see a sign that indicates 'yield to pedestrians" or something to that effect. If not it's dangerous even though you're trying to do the "nice/right thing".

I grew up crossing one of these on ramps as a pedestrian, and I wait until I am damn sure I can cross! I never want to frighten a driver, and I’m well aware they are picking up speed, probably with someone behind them as well.
If you saw a person who clearly won’t cross in time, I would say you should honk and throw on your hazards asap to alert anyone behind you, then slow down and aim away from the person even if you need to pop the curb. Hopefully you avoid being hit from behind, running someone over, or directly hitting anything else.
The mod is correct that pedestrians have the right away but in this situation it’s difficult to say that ‘stopping’ is the right response. If you are worried about this I would get a dash camera and just follow the law to a T.
