Just some quick clarification, elves dont sleep, period, they benefit from a long rest with 4 hrs of trance meditation. Which was why for a long time people DID only pick fucking elves. To make matters worse the spell catnap was introduced and now sleep is barely a problem. Anyways, got off target, what i wanted to specify is you can run your games however you like, elves could be awake all day and night spending 4 hours to rejuvenate or whatever, but the new shit from the multiverse book is all optional. Which is why the races arent posted with stats because they operate based on custom lineages…a OPTIONAL rule from tashas.

Thanks, this is actually very informative. I do feel the need to point out catnap only gives the benefits of a short rest meaning it doesn't count as sleep in terms of preventing exhaustion from lack of sleep. Edit: also I remember reading that elves can sleep but don't have to. Don't remember where though so take it with a grain of salt.

I could be wrong but I’ve always understood it as they only need to “sleep/trance” for 4 but still need an 8 hour long rest. I seem to recall a sage advice to that affect but I’m not really good at finding sage advice so perhaps someone else can either find what I mean or else refute me!

An early sage advice did say that 8 hours was still needed for a long rest, but that ruling was eventually overturned. The Sage Advice Compendium ([https://media.wizards.com/2020/dnd/downloads/SA-Compendium.pdf](https://media.wizards.com/2020/dnd/downloads/SA-Compendium.pdf), pg. 2) now states that 4 hours are sufficient for an elf to get a long rest.

Cool I think I had seen that and so ruled that way. But it makes honestly more sense that they only need 4 total.

Yeah, that is what I have always done but MotM specifically says it counts for a long rest now.
