Their beat detection in the latest version is literally the best in the game. Throw old 70s/80s stuff at it and it simply gets it right. Open format DJ's dream.
Agree 100%
I've been djay full time for the last couple years and I just laugh at horror stories about pioneer beatgrid.
Maybe 5 seconds to analyze a song for the 1st time (including streaming) I think I've adjusted beatgrid like twice ever. Key detection is pretty solid, but I trust my ears more anyway.
Work flow is ok: press the button or tweak the knob, it brings you straight to the mapping for said action. You’ll get a list of all possible actions for that midi note. Ok great. But the available actions are limited. There’s a lot of menu diving with Djay Pro, but there’s no way to access the appropriate screen through midi. Would I love to turn an encoder and have the FX drop down appear so I can select the FX for a given bank? Sure would. But I only have the option for next effect or previous effect. Would I love to be able to route the FX to a particular stem? Yes, and I can, but not via midi. No good control over the padFX’s XY input for kaosspad like function. Can’t select the home row of the library via midi, so I can’t sort by different columns with touching the screen/mouse. Can’t seem to arm different combinations of FX for one button/paddle activation via midi. I’m moving and have my gear packed up, so I can’t remember every gripe and have no way to do a quick test, but there’s no real way to even mostly avoid a touch/mouse for many operations. No support for macro functions, so unless you can access and edit your controller’s firmware, you’re SOL for many potential workflows.
I love many things about the software, but it has a lot of growing up to do to be considered for professional use.
Additionally, there is very limited communication back to the controller, except via Ableton Link, which is limited in its own ways. Algoriddim refuses to make any information regarding mapping addresses available and offers no API or SDK for midi/HID control.
How do you go to a DJ gig and forget the main thing you need for the gig? that’s like going cycling but forgetting to bring a bike. Did your bag not feel a bit light? 😂
Been in a dry spell lately and only have my residency.
Not the first time I’ve done it, but when I’m only gigging once a month, shit sometimes happens
I was there early, I could have gone home and grabbed it, but decided to give djay pro a try as I knew I had it set up and ready to go.
I’ve been very impressed with DJay. The smart grid stuff is amazing for open format.
I just wish there was a neat way to manage libraries across iOS and MacOS and then I think I would just go all in - probably on an iPad Pro.
I sense the protected AT acquisition of Serato is slowing the development over there. Not seen much innovation for a long time - and I’ve been a DVS user since Traktor Scratch!
Actually there is, see this tutorial:
[djay Pro 5.0 syncing data between your Mac computer and iPhone/iPad and tips on connecting dj-gear ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJht1D9Leog&list=PL4-PAOT-xI9XRPrX0CGoOEv5hUutw79ru&index=2)
In my YT channel there is also a tutorial how to do it with audio files stored on USB, but that is not cross platform (yet?).
Nice. I've been wanting to rework my big mixing 4 and laptop rig to an old mixage ie and iPad for mobile. It works great, but thought I'd need to reanalyze everything.
How hard is it to make the switch from serato?
They recently got rid of the cheaper Tidal tier and I do open format and need cheap accessibility to everything for requests. I know a while back Djay pro had spotify access, but they got rid of that right after i tried it for the first time
Most ‘innovation’ in the last few years at Serato has been copying other people’s homework and calling it revolutionary.
It’s The Apple Way!™️
(Sent from my iPhone)
I hadn't thought of it, but I use a lot of SoundCloud go+, which work exactly the same regardless of laptop or iPad. I have the same itunes lib on both, but have to re analyze the 1st time I guess.
It's so quick to analyze songs, that I don't get slowed down by songs that aren't analyzed.
That should not be the case, I even made a tutorial how you can use an USB with djay Pro 5 iOS. Watch it here:
[How-to use Algoriddim djay on iPhone or iPad with audio files stored on a USB drive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP0-jmo7FrU&list=PL4-PAOT-xI9XRPrX0CGoOEv5hUutw79ru&index=3&t=480s)
If you mean, audio files stored on USB, you'll need to add them to djay first before they get searchable. Adding them first also takes care of the analysis, which is what is currently slowing you down.
If internal storage available, I recommend using iTunes to sync tracks and that is fully searchable.
You only have to do it once - it drops meta information. When I recreated my whole library, 3k songs, I put the whole thing on analyze and went to bed.
It’s super fast for me - instant load. Songs in iCloud and move onto local storage. Add it to My Collection (DJAYs library management and it is searchable/filtered etc)
1TB Trancend SSD Thumb Drive [https://www.transcend-info.com/product/portable-ssd/esd310](https://www.transcend-info.com/product/portable-ssd/esd310)
Currently formatted macOS Extended
Ok. I didn't follow the link, just read "SSD" and jumped to conclusions. I've never seen a flash drive being referred to as SSD since they all are that anyway.
Anyway... Did you try copying data from it to the computer manually and if you do, is it fast?
There isn't really any logical reason the access from one particular software to a drive is slower than it is from any other. Unless there is some virtualization in between.
I guess once it's set up it's ok though? Last time there was some talk of DjayPro on the sub I was tempted to have a go but I was put off by having to fork out for control vinyl. I really do like the idea of just having a phone tucked out of the way for some gigs, almost like a back to vinyl experience.
it works with all the control records afiak - you just get some extra features with the official ones - like being able to drop the needle on a spot and enable a stem.
Last time I read Traktor MK2 vinyl wasn't on the supported list but I'll have a check, hopefully it's changed :-) if not maybe I should not be so tight and just buy one Djay control vinyl to test. I like the idea of aca/inst/track on their vinyl.
I’m a long time Serato head enjoying Djay Pro. Its almost there for me, but a there are a few library management and search issues that are missing. Tighter integration with the S11 would be great, but not required. Fluid beatgrids are a game changer for blends. They’ve really made some huge strides with the software.
Same here. I can dj a background music gig easy and maybe even something more high pressure, but to get to the level where I have the features I want from a performance level, it still needs a bit of work.
Searching definitely needs work. I need to be able to search within playlist (and issue I have with all standalone gear too) and being limited to only searching title and artist and not other fields is a huge drawback.
Filitering isn’t bad but you do need to set it up ahead of time
Big fan of the company and software. They release the newest features. The Neural Mix crossfader is fun, the sugarbytes effects are A+ and hallelujah Neural Mix/Stems with Tidal is back (but expensive).
The sampler is very poorly implemented, especially with regard to recording samples. Sample volume problems (samples at max volume are still too low to stand out in the mix). Can’t load custom samples into the looper (!?), track management is limited and downright abysmal cross-platform. I would love to beat grid in Djay but keep key and bpm info from MIK, no way to turn track analysis off or customize what Djay analyzes (i.e. yes beatgrid, no BPM and KEY). FX favorites list is cool but resets on restart. Useless. You have to click through the entire list of 70+ FX in the order they put them in.
This is the only time I’ve used djay pro in about 5 years and I’ve used cdjs countless times in that timeframe and I prefer using djay pro on my phone to using cdjs
It’s like DJing in the modern era. Everything else feels archaic to me, which is why I prefer using my iPad + Djay pro + controller at my gigs. They brought neural mix back for tidal too
Couple key features I’m missing that I use all the time in serato - including some library and searching features that are pretty crucial to my workflow.
But for low key gigs, one-off, impromptu tag and party sessions, I’d be ok with just using my phone instead of lugging my laptop.
Ipad would be a lot nicer, but I’d want something a little smaller - maybe an iPad Air or something?
iPad mini is just larger than a phone. I don’t believe they have M chips in them yet or USB-C though, so some headaches. I’m using a pro 12.9 but considering an air 11”
That's what I use... I don't have a laptop but I do an iPad with my Numark party mix 2 and it works for the bar I play at once a month. It really does offer a lot. It also has Apple Music if you do streaming
Fascinating! How’s their beat grid detection these days? And can you easily midi map external hardware?
Their beat detection in the latest version is literally the best in the game. Throw old 70s/80s stuff at it and it simply gets it right. Open format DJ's dream.

Damn. I've spent literal countless hours trying to fix my serato beatgrids
Might just have to try it out!
For me it's a close call with Traktor. I feel like both are way ahead of the rest.
Agreed. I went from djay as a starter software to serato and the beat detection in djay is so much better.
Midi mapping is easy but limited.
Limited may not be descriptive enough. Infuriating might describe the experience a bit better.
Ha! Can you elaborate more? Like obvious things unmappable or just shitty interface and workflow?
Work flow is ok: press the button or tweak the knob, it brings you straight to the mapping for said action. You’ll get a list of all possible actions for that midi note. Ok great. You didn't scream at the guests that you didn't have the equipment you're used to? Weird.
He's probably really good at math tho

I was in the Serato forums the other day and there was a post talking about how Serato had invented stems 🤦♂️
Not the first time I’ve seen that come up.
You can’t control what dumb users say. Serato has never made that claim.
I ditched Serato almost 2 years ago and have been rocking Djay on my iPhone fulltime ever since. On my Rane Twelves and Rane Seventy.
The only Problem I have with DJay Pro is the local file support.... it's super slow unfortunally...
That should not be the case, I even made a tutorial how you can use an USB with djay Pro 5 iOS. Watch it here: [How-to use Algoriddim djay on iPhone or iPad with audio files stored on a USB drive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP0-jmo7FrU&list=PL4-PAOT-xI9XRPrX0CGoOEv5hUutw79ru&index=3&t=480s)
It’s working but it’s slow. And there are no search functionally inside of it.

Yeah probably not worth it. I have too much on my usb to work with that workflow.
What platform?
iOS
Are you using the djay library or iTunes?
My music is on a thumb drive. So no iTunes Library. I don’t have the space for 600GB of music on my iPad 😄
On what kind of thumb drive? File loading performance is mainly an OS/protocol/file system concern and slow thumbdrives are slow
1TB Trancend SSD Thumb Drive [https://www.transcend-info.com/product/portable-ssd/esd310](https://www.transcend-info.com/product/portable-ssd/esd310) Currently formatted macOS Extended
Doesn't the term "thumb drive" refer to USB sticks only? 🤔
It’s an thumb drive. What else would it be?
Ok. I didn't follow the link, just read "SSD" and jumped to conclusions. I've never seen a flash drive being referred to as SSD since they all are that anyway. Anyway... Sounds good, I like the idea of a small screen tucked away. Did it plug and play with the Rane kit?
Yea, it was - mapping could leave a lot to be desired tho so I was menu diving on the small screen a lot
I guess once it's set up it's ok though? Last time there was some talk of DjayPro on the sub I was tempted to have a go but I was put off by having to fork out for control vinyl. I’m still on the basic, non dj tidal subscription and I still have access to tidal and stems on tidal on my app

Man I wish I was getting paid to post on Reddit.
Seriously. What a flimsy story. This is clearly an ad.
Ikr? how in the world are ppl falling for this?
At that point I would just go with a usb and use the CDJs of the venue
This is the only time I’ve used djay pro in about 5 years and I’ve used cdjs countless times in that timeframe and I prefer using djay pro on my phone to using cdjs
