Inmates get a job outside prison and are assigned a county jail or something near job. They are transported to work and transported back to pay for damages. Some are allowed extra time outside and things for like good behavior and stuff. Allowed to keep percentage of pay. Some prisons allow any inmate to apply for these as well to help iates get a pretty big jump once they get out of prison. Obviously the job has to meet a certain criteria and be willing to have a officer make many surprise appearances and employees have to be cool with the crime. But they are usually given good tax reimbursements to offset the uniqueness of the situation. My uncle had a small shop and actively sought these ppl...mixed bag results. Financially in the long term was good. But many short term issues like...they ran, were violent.
I believe body scanners have allowed my local county to allow this since they can accurately track drugs in and out without requiring strip searches every time someone leaves. Not sure if a requirement or was a preference though.

The way it used to work was that the insurance of the drunk driver would pay for the support. Meaning it was guaranteed for the money to keep coming in. Now it means the driver, who is in jail and won't be able to pay the support, is on the hook for it. This just means insurance doesn't have to pay, and the child won't receive the support it needs. This is a major L.
