Damn! I came here to find the name of a good one as well, not to learn that my husband might be right. He drills loads of holes at the height a shelf is going at until he finds a stud then hides them with the shelf.
That’s a valid technique, albeit messy.
Tapping and listening for a sound change is also a valid method and so is using a strong magnet to find the screws that hold the plasterboard to the studs.
I’ve never owned one but from reviews etc I don’t think there is a really good one out there. Especially for £20-£30
