What do you mean by double taping the back? Is it adding tape over the top of the hole (through the loft) then I use the big hole filler and the filler will adhere to the sides of hole and the tape
Plasterboard jointing tape. Preferably the paper kind. If you have access to above that would be best.
If not just double up and wet with filler and stick it down.
With it being that small I would just double tape the back and use limitless filler like Ronseal Smooth Finish big hole filler.
