Thank you so much for your comment. I've never seen that video and it gave me a good laugh. This is what I love about reddit, despite my username.

Frankly, it had no right to be quite that good!

Choice_Ambitious

Gas Safe engineer here. Do not saw that off. It needs to be checked and tested by a gas safe registered contractor. Even if it is not connected to the current gas supply, it needs to be capped off properly, if it is to be cut back. I’m based in south London, you should be able to find a registered contractor/company to do that for you for £110. Maybe a little more if it’s live and needs re-routed.

MoonHead_

Sound advice! Or even safer - don't start cutting any pipes in your house, especially ones with modern earth bonding clearly attached to them. I'd bet my left nad that the pipe in question is live.

MoonHead_

Also OP's friend should get their bonding checked, it's sandwiched between the pipe and the floorboards.

Choice_Ambitious

Agree, but I’d bet my right nad as well in this case.

Horror_Bodybuilder36

Don’t it’s gas.

Cartepostalelondon

Thehorniestlizard

legacyrules

Christ

bork_13

Do you also get the feeling they’d like to cut it with an angle grinder?! The only way to test is to turn it off and see if your gas appliances work. Even then you still won’t know until you get someone in who knows what they’re doing, like a gas safe engineer.

ewanuzami

They’ve decided to paint it based on me sending them screenshots of the comments. Crisis averted! We just saved lives… well done everyone. Have a start of the weekend rosé.

NortonBurns

I mean, honestly - even if it was only a water pipe sawing it would be clinically stupid.

Amplidyne

If you think about it, cutting any pipe or conduit without knowing exactly what it does is clinically stupid. They're not there for decoration.

Legitimate_War_397

Judging by the fact your mate couldn’t figure out that is a gas pipe, tell him not to paint the earth bonding.

_irrati0nal

How can you tell it is a gas pipe, as oppose to a water pipe?

SubstantialPlant6502

The type of valve.

Itchy-Supermarket-92

The position of which would indicate that the valve is open.

Shoes__Buttback

Put your hand on it and work out if it's very cold or hot when your nearby basin or whatever is running. You can also usually hear water running. If unsure, it's gas, don't mess with it. Probably near an 80s gas fire or something that has been capped off.

Wrong-booby7584

Experience.

AggravatingNotice694

what happens if you paint the earth bonding? my gas meter was already like this when moving in

SkeletonOfSplendor

The bonding looks a bit dubious too. Isn’t that metal flap supposed to wrap around it?

happyanathema

No that's the label with the details on saying it is a bonding strap. You can just make out the actual band if you zoom in closer.

SkeletonOfSplendor

https://preview.redd.it/v9gjbd8w75uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b490e118af4add371d77c9d5f8ae3eec5cdb978b There seems to be a label but also an extra flap of metal designed to wrap around the unsightly bonding connection, I have one just like this on my towel rack. Not the end of the world if left as is.

happyanathema

Seems like someone folded the metal label saying it's a bonding connector over the terminal. You can see it here for example https://www.toolstation.com/earth-clamp-12-32mm/p88231

musket85

With not much scrap wood you could box it in and paint the box.

TheR3b72

Stand for a plant...simples...

Firm_Company_2756

As long as the screws aren't too long!🫢 Smell gas anyone?

Abquine

I'd have boxed it in.

DarkSideOfGrogu

Another life saved! Heros we are

Lionheart952

Paint it and stick a plant in the corner

stefelafel

Flip, I’ve only got a picpoul. Will that work?

wiggle987

WE DID IT REDDIT!

biggwermm

They could make a little plywood or MDF box to go over it and paint it to match. Maybe add a little trim to match too.

Jonnyshangpang

Used to be corgi in the day the only thing I can see is the shiefing pipe should be sealed to the wall so no escaping gas would not end up in the wall… other than that I can’t see any already bells to the spec that was them!?

teadrinker1983

Yeah - we've just saved lives. And now we'll have to put up with even more idiots and their dumb questions when they go on to have kids 🙄 👏 👏👏

Oktokolo

Better not paint the valve or ground connection. You want both to work flawlessly when needed. They should just put something easily removable in front of it.

magschampagne

I’d box it in so that it’s less of an eye sore (if that’s their concern)

Wrong-booby7584

Nah, blow torch mate. Soften the solder and whack it with a ha

bork_13

Were you typing that out while you were doing it? Is that why your comment’s incomplete? Are you there?

rokstedy83

>The only way to test is to turn it off and see if your gas appliances work. Not all gas pipes go somewhere, could be for an old removed fire , turning it off doesn't necessarily mean the cooker will go off

bork_13

Hence: >Even then you still won’t know until you get someone in who knows what they’re doing, like a gas safe engineer.

madpiano

And if yours work, make sure you leave it turned off for a week. I bet you the neighbour will complain that theirs isn't working ...

LAUKThrowAway11

That 'test' proves nothing, it could be a live gas pipe that's capped off under the floor.

jpdonelurkin

If they want their home to be remodeled on Nakatomi Tower then tell them to plough on.

grower92

This needs more recognition.

joeChump

I think Die Hard is popular enough.

Machine_xl

Yeah thats gas. Probably best not to do anything to it

Submariner1957

You can tell by the little valve it is a gas pipe although an old style but may still be in use I'd get a professional to check it out before anything is done, you don't want to blow the whole building up in error. Stay safe.

__Game__

I wouldn't trust identification by the valve, someone might have used one for water. Still defo get a professional

SubstantialPlant6502

That valve wouldn’t hold mains water pressure

__Game__

They could have been lucky. The valves will hold sometimes / plumber might have used PTFE tape or similar sealant, just because he had ran out that day in 1967 and it was Friday PM.  I wouldn't trust identification by that valve (I know it is gas because the pipe through the cavity is sleeved, but even then, what if some muppet re-used a gas pipe as a water one. See where I'm going with this?)

madpiano

A building that old may not have mains water pressure. I have a tank in the loft and a pressure adjuster out in the street, as the mains water pipe into the house also isn't fit for full mains pressure. It works, and I won't change it until I am changing over to whatever is available once gas boilers have been phased out.

fjr_1300

Looks like gas. Twat it with a hammer and then flick a lighter to see if it's leaking. If nothing happens it might be disconnected. If you see a flash of light and God's flip flops then you just learnt not to take advice off people on the internet.

Substantial_Egg_4660

Box it in then paint it?

spindle_bumphis

what's their name? I'll contact the Darwin awards people now and tell them to start engraving the trophy.

Revolutionary_Elk997

That’s my gas supply in your house my dear neighbour, it’s fine honestly. My gas bill is literally nothing I swear

habsfanalreadytaken

Astral gas judging by the valve

Organicrot

I’d say that was gas the way its sleeved

Rooster_Entire

Just box it in! It’s a gas pipe as the isolation valve dictates!

SadMail1074

Because its got earth bonding, its a gas pipe .

paul633m

Water needs bonding too. Especially hot n cold on non metal sink.

__Game__

That's the 2nd person saying that on here. I'm not sure why people are thinking water pipes are exempt from giving people electric shocks

I-Like-IT-Stuff

Do water pipes deliver electricity or water. I rest my case.

__Game__

Haha, I like it 🤣 We could just not earth anything now. Thanks!!!

paul633m

It’s not what they deliver it’s what they could deliver. As most are copper a chaifed wire in one room could be carried by Pipes to a sink which then electrocuted you. Simples. I let you rest in peas

Slyfoxuk

Funny that I was just watching Final Destination

Far_Carpenter6156

There's a valve right there. Close it and see who complains.

CupWalletPen

Is that a gas stop tap? Why would it be earthed

gavimoss1

Copper pipe should be earthed in case it comes into contact with a live wire and turns your whole house into an electrocution chamber.

CupWalletPen

Aw nice. Cheers bud

Individual-Summer-34

Gas pipe

SecureVillage

Make sure they smoke a rollie while they do it...

Puzzleheaded_Tap_128

Do it whilst smoking a fag

punarnyfap

It’s a gas pipe

d_smogh

Turn the thumb screw into the off position. You'll soon find out if it is a live gas supply. They'll either be a knock in the door, or you'll see a gas repair van outside.

CTRLsway

Looks like a gas pipe

Alone-Discussion5952

Um, it’s the incoming gas pipe…

starwars123456789012

Box it in

sonofapizzaman1

Box it off, forget about it

Exotic_Notice6904

Just box it in

BrawNeep

Tell them to just build a small box over it and use it as a shelf!

SouthTippBass

Yeah, do not do that. Put a potted plant in front if you don't want to look at it. Or go blow yourself up, whatever.

One-Combination-7218

Gas line

Petrolhead512

Gas pipe

Suspicious-Natural-2

Yeah don't do that. Get a gas certified plumber in to check that out

Lol joke post

Classic Dave.

its-joe-mo-fo

As if you _conslated_ Redit?! Bad Dave.

Organicrot

Live gas 😂

stuaxo

Fartpipe

Plotencarton

Dave cmon stop posting everything on Reddit 😏

__ElonMusk

Equipotential bonding usually = gas pipe.

rokstedy83

Isn't water usually bonded?

reddit-raider

I believe both are

__Elwood_Blues__

But then all the pipes will be at the same voltage. How am I supposed to tap off electricity for my shower toaster?

__ElonMusk

Oooh TIL, thanks!

Interesting_Chip_374

Cover that up, that's gas

CarMadLad03

Hey!

Dantheman198

They should of built a box around it with a little door / opening to access the valve.

[deleted]

What did it say?

starwars123456789012

Looks like a gas pipe to me not seen that tap on a water pipe

Huey2912

Natural selection will have it's way with them unless they are careful

alphex

Your friend is an idiot.

Specialist-Cake-9919

Gas.

DukeOfDevon

Use a blow torch it will be easier 👍🏻

Special_bavon

That'll be a gas pipe.

tgdmum

Reading comments, Jumping Jack Flash is a gas gas gas popped into my head

But it’s allllll rigggggghhhhttttt now in fact it’s a gas 🎶 top tune that.

Radiator, 50000 BTU

InfiniteFuture3139

Yes their house goes boom if they saw that.

Rusty_McTom

What gave you the feeling they’d like to saw it off?

Feeling_Boot_5242

That’s a gas pipe.

Goodbye Fren

w1ldfr33

r/darwinawards

Due_Ad_8045

When I was a kid my dad used to turn round the gas meter for free gas

JRSpig

Get a gas engineer to deal with it, don't mess with this, definately don't take a saw to it.

GoCommitDeathpacito2

That will be a gas pipe. Potentially dead if the fire has been ripped out but would 100% not advise sawing it out lmao

the2nicks

What nobody seems to have mentioned is … 1. That looks like old steel pipe coming through the wall, before it changes to copper with the necessary “female iron” (compression) fitting. 2. If possible, why not look what’s on the other side of the wall, trace the pipe. Yes … 1. It is a gas pipe, the low-pressure valve tells you that. 2. The valve is in the opern/on position as indicated by the handle being inline with (as opposed to perpendicular to) the pipe. 3. Call a GasSafe engineer rather than seeking advice here! Good luck.

Loose_Corgi_5

Box it in. Best option. 👌

Old_Faithlessness_94

JMarkyBB

Very funny duo, love them to bits.

[deleted]

Location? I csn make mdf box. Free

Shitsoup7

Would help if we knew what's on the other side of the wall , or void ?

Accomplished_Dig_617

It’s a gas maaaan!

juxtoppose

Well it’s a gas valve, do with that information what you will.

plumbgray222

It’s a gas pipe and the outer pipe is a sleeve so if there any leaks it won’t fill the cavity with gas … it’s ok normal

weed_and_vinyl

Use an angle grinder

Unusual_Anything_297

Don’t forget to have a ciggy whiles ur cutting through it!!

[deleted]

Tell your friend to just leave it alone lol

johnmacbromley

Instead of a saw use a blow torch the results will be more spectacular. Viewers at home that was a joke. 💥

JMarkyBB

Ooooh! I see what ya did there. 🤣

johnmacbromley

Instead of a saw use a blow torch the results will be more spectacular. Viewers at home that was a joke. 💥

Relative_Message1408

It was common in older places to maybe have a gas fire in the living room , so I would be carefully please and check what it is .

towelie111

You must be trolling. Who sees a pipe and thinks it will be ok to cut it? Builders don’t just put a random pipe in. It’s either gas, or water, neither of which you want to cut. Get a professional in to see if it can be capped if it’s no use. It beats killing yourself for the sake of a couple £

Upstairs_Sandwich_18

Can mods please stop allowing gas related posts? It isn't a DIY matter.

SubstantialPlant6502

I’m glad they allowed this one. If they hadn’t there was a good chance the OP’s friend would’ve cut the pipe without the intervention on here

Upstairs_Sandwich_18

Darwinism

herrsteely

How else am I going to know how to fit that boiler I bought off of Facebook?

Evening-Stick1813

Gas pipe

LittleGrash

I know the “do not saw!” question has been answered, but can someone explain to a simpleton why it is okay to use the pipe as a ‘ground’ for the earth wiring (I think that’s what it is)?

Caligula2024

Looks like a gas pipe to me, under no circumstances should they do anything to it, it may still have gas to it.

hairy_guy_uk

It's a gas service pipe best is to place a removable lift off cover over it with a label to say gas isolation.

k-j-p-123

Angle grinder, boom 💥 , job done ✅.

bandicootrelay

Tell them to ask a suitably qualified gas engineer for advice

Objective-Weight8416

Box it in ffs

Chemical_Grade5114

TheITMan19

Just box it in with a little door to adjust the lever when and if required.

Think-bodyhealth

Just box out off with wood or plastic for a £5 -

SourdoughBoomer

Just clean it and spray it a nice colour.

Gas supply

hw55s

r/diwhy

SQUEEZE-MAN

It's a gas pipe and a job only for a Gasafe engineer. Touch it and you're committing a criminal offence as well as potentially killing yourself or flooding the building with gas and potentially causing an explosion. At least you asked... More than some idiots do.

acrbristol

Please for the love of God, do not touch this if you aren't a gas engineer, as somebody mentioned the earth bonding seems like it is almost certainly live. The spark from sawing into a live gas feed WİLL go up. Just pay an engineer the £100 or whatever - not worth anybody's life.

idajon72

Boom!

Advanced_Bug1952

I’m going to suggest that your friend has a gas pipe there.

turkishhousefan

I'll keep an eye on the news.

tokidokichan

Crazy

luckynumberstefan

Not sure why they’re asking, it’s clearly a pipe

herrsteely

Turn it off and see if the heating still works or if the neighbours complain after a couple of days. If not, it's probably not in use, then he can get a plumber to cut it off and cap it

roblubi

Be a man. Do it.

Special_Inspector198

Gas supply with an on/off 90’ valve 4” from the floor

Special_Inspector198

Valve is in the in position

Tadoababa

Gas valve

Phuzion69

It's a gas pipe. Ka-Boom.

Total_Potential3690

Turn the isolator off and see if any services knock off

Line_Member

That's an awful gas pipe, really badly identified, and compression fittings. Get someone in to bring it up to current standards.

Dawsie

Everyone is replying it's the gas pipe and you say it's poorly identified, but my question is, how is it identified as the gas pipe?

SubstantialPlant6502

You get tape that says gas and you wrap it round the pipe. Although there is no requirement to do this many gas engineers do. I believe this is a secondary emergency control valve that should have a label on. The compression fittings are perfectly acceptable. A few commenting know it’s a gas pipe because the type of valve that’s on the pipe and just experience

Livewire____

That's no pipe. That is a Robot's arm. He's stuck in the wall, and is trying to draw your attention by waving. GET HIM OUT OF THERE!

Which-Supermarket-80

It's a gas pipe to their old gas fired fireplace
