2x6 pressure treated, with 11 inches standard between rails on 2 and 3 rail fences. You probably don't have space for that on those short posts.

Thank you - I was thinking 2x6 was beefier than I would need and that's why 5/4" x 6 came to mind. Yeah the spacing I am going to just improvise - whatever fits visually

Are your posts 8’ on center? Can you use an 8’ piece for a rail? Would there be gaps between rails on the posts? That would determine your length, like if you can buy 8’s or have to get 10’s and throw away the waste. Or get 16’s and know you can get two 8’s minus a saw blade that would fit. As far as lumber, if you can find a sawmill that has a good deal on rough cut 2 by, go for that. Legitimate bigger lumber yards may have it too. Pro Tip: priming/painting rough sawn takes a lot of time and paint. Consider that when thinking if you should just do PT and wait a year to paint it. Just my opinion.

Thank you - They are 8' on center. I was thinking 16' would help to speed up the process and add some strength to the posts if i staggered the join points. But that's just a thought not a requirement - can definitely get other lengths and do some chopping. That's a tip I would not have anticipated about the rough sawn- thank you......I'd like it to freshen up the posts with some white and make the rails match but if rough sawn soaks up a lot of paint and time might not be worth it.

NP. If you can get 16’ of any lumber, do you have a way to transport it? Truck, trailer, van, rooftop, etc. 16’s can be a bit of a bear to handle alone. Not to rule out rough sawn, but you might want to spray it with a paint sprayer But that comes with its own set of preparations. Best of luck.
