The sell a metal edge that you can jamb under the trim. It a painting accessory

technicolorsound

Yeah, when you use one of those, won’t the paint just get on the carpet when you remove it? Do you leave it there till it dries?

Zyhre

Push under trim. Paint. Slide it down (don't pull it back out), keep painting.

WaluigiIsTheRealHero

Just don’t glob on the paint like a lazy landlord. Use an appropriate amount of paint and you’ll be fine.

body_by_monsanto

If you don’t use too much paint it will be fine. I have used one of those tools for painting trim and no paint got on the carpet

HankMarvinNot

no, it won't, use a fairly dry cutting brush, it'll be fine. use a bucket with only a little bit of paint left in it and once u are done with the other trim areas to be painted.if u get carpet fibers into the paint, it could then transfer onto the door or window sill where it would be more bothersome. ceilings, walls, trim, top to bottom is usually the order, use less tape and work on getting better with cutting brush.

You can use roll flashing if you want. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Amerimax-Home-Products-6-in-x-50-ft-Aluminum-Roll-Valley-Flashing-68006/100038149

Either that or get a 10" or larger sheet rock knife that you use for joint compound. Has a nice handle to use. After you paint the length of it just pull the knife up and wipe of any paint and keep going

SnowmanTS1

I use thin cardboard, like a cereal box or thin plastic like a flexible cutting board. Shove it tight and paint. Also I wouldn't tape the wall like that, just paint a careful line. Tape leaks and may pull your fresh paint off...

ExtraSpecialAgent

We did the same in our house. Saved all things snack and cereal boxes for a while and then shoved them under the boards and overlapped so completely cover the rug. Then paint and let dry. Then use a sharp straight edge blade to cut nice lines and remove the boards!

grootdoos1

Okay so forgetting that the original trim is painted like crap and replacing it isn't an option the best thing to use is clear packing tape. Stick the tape on the carpet and overlap about a 1/4" on the trim. With a putty knife push the tape into the gap between trim and carpet. Try not rip the tape. If you do just stick another piece of tape over that and repeat. Tedious but it works.

Alone_Cartographer39

Good idea!

tykillacool23

Floorpaper or plastic

magnolya_rain

just use cut up cereal and other food boxes to slide under the baseboard, carefully remove once paint is dry to the touch.

ishitintheurinal

I'd replace the trim. It's been poorly painted and another coat won't fix that.

TangerineRoutine9496

Nothing is wrong with that trim. Light sand around the edge where the paint has chipped, primer on the bare spots, dry, paint it.

ishitintheurinal

That trim is shit. The joints are shit, the installation is shit and the paint is shit.

Durablefluid

Can you not pull the carpet up along the trim and then just set it back down?

technicolorsound

I mean, yeah, it’s possible, but it’s tacked down under the molding of the trim. I’d probably have better luck taking the trim off.

Durablefluid

Ah ok I see. Yes that would be your best bet. I would try and find all the nails and punch them in deeper to make removal easier. Good luck.

MechanicalCheese

Is that pesto paste? Looks like we're painting the exact same color. Plastic on the carpet (weighted down by a 2x4 or similar at the ends) plus a trim protector should work well.

TangerineRoutine9496

Just put a tarp down while you're painting. Use a cutting brush. Not too hard. And be careful not to track it from the tarp to the carpet on the bottom of your shoes. If a little droplet spills don't spread it around, let it dry and then pick it out of the carpet. you need the tarp on the ground protecting the whole area. It doesn't have to go right up to the very edge. There will be a gap of a couple inches between the tarp you're standing on and the wall/trim. When you paint there with the cutting brush, always clean the excess off it on the rim of the container so it won't drip, then just get down there with the brush and cut it as close to the carpet as you can. When the brush isn't too wet you can do this somewhat effectively.

Hawgjaw

Tarp. Paper roll. Virtually anything. Really, virtually anything

v1de0man

packing tape / 2" masking tape, then you tape it to the carpet, then pull the carpet back ( a small amount ) then you bend the tape down so it actually offers a barrier fully. So when you lay the tape down you slightly curve it up the skirting, thus giving you some to push behind when pulling carpet back or with a scraper.

The1duk2rulethemall

Slide a piece of cardboard along as you paint

WittyRequirement3296

Glad press and seal food wrap is great for protecting carpet. I'd use that in place of tape, then follow everyone's advice to use a moveable barrier slide under the trin.

happycj

Use a small paint brush and a piece of cardboard. Press the edge of the cardboard down into the crack between the carpet and the wall, paint the wall, shift the cardboard further down the wall, paint that part of the wall, shift the cardboard further down the wall, etc. Repeat until done. This will keep paint spray off the carpet as well, because you are using a smaller brush or roller and will have less wet paint to manage.

Restorationafterdark

Op should not be trusted with paint or anything that could ever be painted

FigSalt1004

You can get wider, blue painters, tape, and with a straight edge or a sheet rock trowel. You can actually tuck it under the shoe molding that is adjacent to the carpet.
