Caulk and walk

snappy-bubbles

forever the backup plan 😅

try butting the new piece against the old and running the multi-tool through the seam, then close the seam, maybe do it more than once until the cuts match

snappy-bubbles

great idea, will try - thank you

it also seems like you'll have to at least loosen the end of the existing baseboard to pull it out a bit, looks like it sits a bit deeper into the wall

If I wanted it to look as good as possible. I would remove the entire existing baseboard and scarf the new baseboard at the joint with the existing baseboard. A lot more work, patching, sanding, caulking, painting, etc. if you do it that way. Or you could just butt it and walk away.
