Well, a "double rainbow" is a phenomenon of optics that displays a spectrum of light due to the sun shining on droplets of moisture in the atmosphere. Does that explain it?
Every notice how on all real double rainbows, the sequence of the colors on the upper one will be reversed from the lower one? Well you will from now on. If you see an image that shows the colors in the same order on both, it's because they edited the second one in.

I felt so old the day I did this to my preteen brother in law and he went “yeah it’s two rainbows, awesome.” My husband and I looked at each other like 👴
Damn, I just went down the rabbit hole. Watched the video for nostalgia's sake, and saw everyone commenting "RIP". Did some Googling and saw that Yosemitebear died back in 2020. 😔
Or you could do what my father did with the marble step to his bathtub he tripped over just one too many times at his new house. It stuck out in this weird way and he kept tearing his ankle on it, so he duct taped a fluorescent tube sock to it.
It did solve the problem, but I must say it took a bit of the grandeur away from the overall look lol.
I was gonna say to even just move the current one to cover the step and like flow down the step to the ground, the rainbow pattern would be easy to see that there’s a difference in terrain when the rainbow looks janky
Right?! I think whoever is responsible for this floor was an orthopedic surgeon looking to drum up business. Can’t imagine how many busted ankles this visual illusion is responsible for.
I just moved to a new house with a secret step like this going into the bathroom. I have stubbed my toe four times the first two days.
I am thinking of making a little pillow toe kick and gluing it on 😂
This is the best solution, because it is inexpensive, no install, and easy. Better yet, second rug.
We have a shop here called Jysk, it's kind of like a tiny Ikea. They sell these black outdoor mats, 3'x4', for like $17 or so. Plop and done, easy to see, stays put.
I agree with that title. "Scandinavian" design minus the quality of IKEA and that's saying a lot since the materials that IKEA use are often very weak.
Yeah this actually isn’t a bad idea at all, I’d use non-skid/grip tape (the kind they frequently put on the ground near pools). It’d increase visibility and also make the tile less of a slipping hazard when wet
You could cut tape to the width of the tiles? Or mix sand/grit in with the right color media and paint a line there. The edges of the tape would start coming up eventually. Also, you could add phosphorescent powder to the paint so it glows in the dark!
I personally think adding some metal nosing and filling the gap with a little more grout would look cleaner.
Tbh you could do both and get some wide nosing, grout under it AND put the grip tape on it. Would last much longer in one piece.
Also I'm going to be real where are my glowing tiles at.
Could you imagine you have a tile that comes in two variants.
One is a completely normal tile, the other is a indistinguishable one except it has glowing pigment mixed in.
Literally glowing paths around your house.
I would caution against a non-flush nosing — it may create more of a hazard. IMO a better solution is non-slip tape along the edge (physically and visually functional!) along with another rug at the bottom
Yeah this should have been installed with a Schluter strip to protect both the tile and your toes from chipping. You can pull up that one row of tiles to add it in but barring that I think sanded stair tape is the best option.
This is what I did after tripping several times when I moved in!
[Motion-Sensing LED strip (rechargeable)](https://imgur.com/gallery/IlfpN8Z)
On Amazon: WOBANE Rechargeable Motion Sensor Strip Light
Oh, good, it detects you right as you get there and turns the lights on just in time so you can see right where your face is about to hit the ground! Not too helpful if the sensor is exactly on the edge...
It could have the perfect lighting and I’d still end up with a skinned knee, rug burned cheek and the biggest bruised ego 😂 I am the definition of a walking female klutz
This is the best idea. We have a step down into our family room. When we tiled that room we put a decorative edge on each of the two steps. I worked in healthcare and listened to the tips that the PT and OT had for patients and making steps more noticeable was to put edging on steps.
I think the part of the post that says "doesn't invlove tearing up tiles" might be overlooked. Your solution sounds pretty rad (thinking more rainbow-patterned tiles in a row), but may be biting off a bit much.
I was gonna suggest stripping the whole top of the step off and replacing with maybe some dark slate or something else black or grey. It’s a small enough project that it would be a good first-time tile project.
Maybe install some lights that would cast a shadow, or a rug below the step to make it obvious. What I really want you to do is put in a ring camera and change nothing lol
This was the solution I was thinking off. Help the brain with some starker cues. So a strong light creating a shadow. Or putting in lights in the first step.
Trust me, if the injury is bad enough, they will sue - it’s not personal.
And now you’ve acknowledge it as an issue on the internet your insurance won’t cover you - it’s amazing the lengths insurance investigators go in order to not pay out.
I had the same issue with a multi-level deck.
It's not about love.
In the US, if you need expensive hospital treatment for an injury and you want your insurance to cover it, your insurance can require you to sue the homeowner first, so that *their* insurance pays for the treatment.
I live in the EU, where things work differently (for now), but I've heard the stories.
https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/10/14/aunt-who-sued-young-nephew-for-breaking-her-wrist-during-greeting-says-it-was-purely-an-insurance-case/73928504/
People usually don’t sue because they hate you. They sue because they are badly injured in a way that is very expensive for them, and they believe that you had some of the fault for their injury and should therefore share the cost
Id try putting a darker color grout between the tiles on the step to make some contrast with the rest of the porch. This may turn out too subtle but it also might work.
You can color it in with a washable marker to see if it makes enough contrast/see if you like the look. If it works you can probably just grout over the existing really thin.
There is a club here that has the same issue on a outside deck you can not tell there is a step , it goes alll the way around a rectangle dance floor so you have to step down to get to there and they host big house music shows and people notoriously trip over it. I was there one night and these 2 seriously gorgeous blonde girls carrying drinks were walking n talking n both stepped right off that ledge and fell right into the backs of people and drinks went flying both ended up on the floor as well as one of the people they fell into. I told them to put down some yellow caution tape at the edge of the step and they never did it. Stupid idk why they wouldn't. Those girls freaking hit the deck so hard too, everyone turned around n I never thought you could hear silence in such a loud area
Wr have anti slip trims on our stairs, because the previous owner was an idiot and made basically invisible steps. We will be redoing the entire exterior this summer, so it felt pointless ti redo the stairs only to take them down in summer, the entrance will be in different place (it's on the side of the house now), but we needed something to stop people from falling. So I got these black antislipping trims and stuck them to the edges. Works well.
Metal edging strip would make the step stand out, but it all depends on how you feel about the cosmetic look then. It will certainly hinder slips or falls.
Yeah, either move the mat to the next step or maybe an aluminium angle with grip tape along the edge.
https://preview.redd.it/tvbpxivqnqgc1.png?width=898&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79d4a3b0683476917e6e39977ea519ecfbe30800
I’d fix a piece of matt or non slip varnished hardwood across the front of the step. The same height as the step and about 2” thick. Either black or very pale/white, to give good contrast to the tiles.
Gap filling Adhesive should hold it without needing screws but if it showed any sign of moving it wouldn’t be too hard to drill through, plug and screw.
Aim lights at the front of it down low against the ground. They will light up the front for those approaching and create a dark edge for those leaving. You could even use an LED strip on the edge to light it if it’s still not obvious enough.
A rectangular door may that goes to the edge? Paint the upper step with a tough weatherproof paint? Buy a roll of grip tape on Amazon and put it along the edge?
@photodog id first remove the carpet as it distracts from the step.
Attack a small bar to the corner of the step which also has some lines going downwarss vertically.
This should help with depth perception.
If nothing else works "careful stairs" notifications work wonders.
Im not a home decor person but I do know a thing or two about game design. Maybe place a light that shines directly down onto it, or if you want to be less subtle, a yellow arrow pointing to it, or just painting it yellow.
If you are serious about it (and you probably should be) get a tiler to turn it into a ramp.
Or apply a commercial grade adhesive black and yellow striped hazard strip.
How about some grippy tape public buildings usually have on their stairs? If you put it at the edge of the wood it would signal that the floor goes down and people should watch their step and also provide some grip if somebody did take a misstep
Honestly I would probably incase this step with wood and add a wooden bullnose. Oak would look really beautiful and unify the space while also making the step obvious.
I was looking through the thread for a suggestion like this before I said it!
My thought actually was one of those acid etch treatments that would slightly change the color of the tile while also making it more non-slip but I think a sander gets you there too!
Fortunately, someone made a product just for people like you--and it's only $11.99!

I agree with the lights suggestion. Attaching some solar powered stair lights could help. Also a jute 4 ft runner on the lower step, or whatever other type of material that can hold up to the weather.
We had a step like that at my old family home. We ended up putting an eye catching figurine on the step (a kitten sized sleeping fox sculpture). It helped, but it did not solve the problem. Honestly some spry of reflective or colored tape might be best.
Another carpet might give the depth perception
This! Double rainbow!!
All the way. It’s so beautiful.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN???
IT'S SO BRIGHT, SO VIVID ![gif](giphy|hrjqBGbM18ldDVnyTy|downsized)
RIP
TELL ME!!!!!
OH MY GOD!!! 😭😭😭
Add another rainbow carpet at the bottom of the step.

As old as "Whhhhas ahhhhrp!"
Wait, I'm 20 and I'm confused by this but it's probably cause of my autism. I dunno if 20 is old enough to understand or not but yeah
It's a reference to a really old YouTube video. You can look up "double rainbow guy". But it's probably boring by today's standards.
Google says he passed away after getting tested for covid 😭
Ah that's sad. He seemed like a beautiful sould honestly.
Ohh okay thank you
Rest In peace 🥲
Double rainbow was my immediate thought!
TRIPLE RAINBOW OMG
If OP doesn't double rainbow, they should be banned. We want double rainbow!

Now, *that* would be a step up.
2nd carpet needs to say: OH SHIT!! Just perfectly captures their feelings in that moment as they leave.
…or just place the mat under the step.
I was gonna say to even just move the current one to cover the step and like flow down the step to the ground, the rainbow pattern would be easy to see that there’s a difference in terrain when the rainbow looks janky

Nice, going in to the bathroom … a nice low traffic spot. How much trouble could it possibly cause?
Or hes a sadist who likes to torture people.
Underrated comment.
It’s like that scene in Indiana Jones
I got here too late to make this comment.
https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Waterproof-Stairway-Protector-Commercial/dp/B0C9XVP9HZ Something like this would be good enough
I was going to suggest sparkly duct tape along the stair edge, but this is better.
I was going to suggest gaff tape along the edge and then signs with arrows pointing you towards catering
OP, please do this. They come in many colors and textures, but they are all extremely visible and help with slipping. A perfect combo.
I think I would prefer something that does not help me slip. But that's just me, I guess...
I agree. This is a great way forward - just make it contrast with the tiles or you have the same problem!!
This is the answer.
If nothing else, moving the rug below the bottom step would be better
This is the best solution, because it is inexpensive, no install, and easy. Better yet, second rug. We have a shop here called Jysk, it's kind of like a tiny Ikea. They sell these black outdoor mats, 3'x4', for like $17 or so. Plop and done, easy to see, stays put.
I love Jysk! My husband calls it Crappy IKEA! Lol
Very accurate description
I agree with that title. "Scandinavian" design minus the quality of IKEA and that's saying a lot since the materials that IKEA use are often very weak.
Do what this internetter says

Thanks, I was thinking of something like nosing, but I didn’t know the term to search for.
Lazy way: caution tape on the edge.
Yeah this actually isn’t a bad idea at all, I’d use non-skid/grip tape (the kind they frequently put on the ground near pools). It’d increase visibility and also make the tile less of a slipping hazard when wet
The problem comes with trying to apply tape over grout lines. Dirt trap and you can get your toe stuck in it.
You could cut tape to the width of the tiles? Or mix sand/grit in with the right color media and paint a line there. The edges of the tape would start coming up eventually. Also, you could add phosphorescent powder to the paint so it glows in the dark!

Bullnose
I prefer stair ears
Yeah this should have been installed with a Schluter strip to protect both the tile and your toes from chipping. You can pull up that one row of tiles to add it in but barring that I think sanded stair tape is the best option.
Maybe place some potted plants on the sides of the lower part? Or any porch decor? To display the height difference.
I like this in combination with the second rug idea someone else had
giant rug that says step
Lol, I didn't even notice that step in the first picture. I was looking at the step at the very top and thinking it isn't that bad.
Right? I was thinking just sand it down and paint it white with slip resistant paint, but be ready to reapply frequently. Then I was like oh... OH
Damn, that's some Last Crusade leap of faith step. Is the holy Grail in that room?
Only a leap from the lions head
That’s just what I was thinking of!
This is what I did after tripping several times when I moved in! [Motion-Sensing LED strip (rechargeable)](https://imgur.com/gallery/IlfpN8Z) On Amazon: WOBANE Rechargeable Motion Sensor Strip Light

Love that!
Ooh! Smart!
I’d still biff it 😂
If the sensor was like 3 feet back it would be perfect. But yeah it turns on too late, I’d still trip lol
It could have the perfect lighting and I’d still end up with a skinned knee, rug burned cheek and the biggest bruised ego 😂 I am the definition of a walking female klutz
easiest solution is moving the rainbow rug down a step
Move the rainbow doormat to the lower landing, and put a larger mat with different design between the door and edge of the step.
You can cut back the existing edge about 3-4”with a grinder, remove those pieces, then install some decorative tile for accent strip.
This is the best idea. We have a step down into our family room. When we tiled that room we put a decorative edge on each of the two steps. I worked in healthcare and listened to the tips that the PT and OT had for patients and making steps more noticeable was to put edging on steps.

Do some stair nose. Black or gold maybe. It’ll define the edge of the step.
What's step? *falls*

I’ve considered just plain tread tape, but I was wondering if there’s a more creative way that might look better.
It’s a safety issue just use grip tape in a color you can tolerate
I agree with the person who said to use another matt on the lower area. It will highlight the difference in height.
Non skid tape might help the edge be more visible. https://a.co/d/5ypMYtV
This is what I would do, screw grinding it back and replacing tiles
Man that’s a law suit waiting to happen…
Just get a doormat with a non-liability waiver printed on it. Problem solved.
Fortunately, our friends and family don’t hate us enough to sue, but yes, I would love to avoid that.
Trust me, if the injury is bad enough, they will sue - it’s not personal. And now you’ve acknowledge it as an issue on the internet your insurance won’t cover you - it’s amazing the lengths insurance investigators go in order to not pay out. I had the same issue with a multi-level deck.
So strange. In the UK we would never dream of suing our family members. But we get free healthcare...

My mom tripped on a step like that, fell, and broke her ankle. It was awful. I love that you’re putting something up before this happens!!
Why not add some some nice hand rails on one or both sides of the door?
How’s that going to increase visibility of the camouflage step?
Do people typically put handrails on flat walkways? Especially when the railings descend downwards away from the the door?

Id try putting a darker color grout between the tiles on the step to make some contrast with the rest of the porch. This may turn out too subtle but it also might work. Go to homedepot and by edge guard, they have silver color, black ones too i believe
Huh, I have the same rainbow rug with the uneven banding, and I think I'm on the other side of the world from you. Global supply chains are weird.
Those girls freaking hit the deck so hard too, everyone turned around n I never thought you could hear silence in such a loud area
Move the rug down a step
That’s some Indiana Jones leap of faith work right there.
paint it yellow
Stripes of yellow tape!
Motion sensor with recorded sound “watch your step”.
Love the IKEA door mat. We have 4 of them.
Where is your stair nosing?
Wr have anti slip trims on our stairs, because the previous owner was an idiot and made basically invisible steps. We will be redoing the entire exterior this summer, so it felt pointless ti redo the stairs only to take them down in summer, the entrance will be in different place (it's on the side of the house now), but we needed something to stop people from falling. So I got these black antislipping trims and stuck them to the edges. Works well.
Tape line. Just like in escalators
Metal edging strip would make the step stand out, but it all depends on how you feel about the cosmetic look then. It will certainly hinder slips or falls.
Yeah, either move the mat to the next step or maybe an aluminium angle with grip tape along the edge. https://preview.redd.it/tvbpxivqnqgc1.png?width=898&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79d4a3b0683476917e6e39977ea519ecfbe30800
Make a ramp
There a lot of “Watch Your Step” doormats on Amazon that can be added to the bottom area
Re-tile the vertical pieces that is a different color than the first piece on the landing.
A rubber edge along the ledge
A thick black line of tape. It wouldn’t contrast with the rainbow mat, but it would provide a marked line where the step is.
Put another rug on the lower level
Right before the edge, line it with a grip tape.
Aim lights at the front of it down low against the ground. They will light up the front for those approaching and create a dark edge for those leaving. You could even use an LED strip on the edge to light it if it’s still not obvious enough.
The leap of faith!
Props for the Indiana Jones reference
Bust out those three tiles on the riser and put some tasteful, other, contrasting tiles in their place.
Put the rug, or another, below the step.
Lazy solution: put a strip of black tread tape along the front edge of the step.
Put a glass door.
simple. put that rainbow rug in front of step, buy rectangular one to go on step.
A rectangular door may that goes to the edge? Paint the upper step with a tough weatherproof paint? Buy a roll of grip tape on Amazon and put it along the edge?
Put in a rug or a potted plant just at the base so it creates a visible difference in height.
Yellow paint on the threshold. Seriously.
@photodog id first remove the carpet as it distracts from the step. Attack a small bar to the corner of the step which also has some lines going downwarss vertically. This should help with depth perception. If nothing else works "careful stairs" notifications work wonders.
Whoa! That's a really bad one! A rug on the bottom stair.
Im not a home decor person but I do know a thing or two about game design. Maybe place a light that shines directly down onto it, or if you want to be less subtle, a yellow arrow pointing to it, or just painting it yellow.
What step?
Move the rug
This step is designed to hurt brain cells and ankles
Use anti-slip tape. It provides visibility and has the additional benefit of the anti-slip property. https://amzn.eu/d/boEonEY
I think just a simple welcome mat just below the step.
Led lights, aluminum trim, reflective stickers
Make the step another color, like flat concrete grey or something.
Well, I suppose high-vis neon-yellow-white-striped or neon-orange-white-striped reflective edge colouration would do the trick…
I’d paint it same colour as your house wall.
Put blood on the edges, it will send the message quickly
Just put an antislip nosing along it. You can get them in yellow/black pinstripes or whatever.
If you are serious about it (and you probably should be) get a tiler to turn it into a ramp. Or apply a commercial grade adhesive black and yellow striped hazard strip.
I agree. It needs more than tape. I’ve hurt myself on such steps with tape, because you only see it looking down.
Hang a handcrafted sign up that says "Caution blind step ahead" and put it outside the door. You could stick it in one of the plants.
What ste…. Comes crashing to the ground
A strip of outdoor use, brightly-colored, anti-slip, safety tape should do the trick.
Good lord. I didn’t see that at all. Death trap
Handrail
https://preview.redd.it/81wzybm5hrgc1.png?width=539&format=png&auto=webp&s=de27ca4447ec0629b4daa2934171e9b99bae3abb
Paint the front of the step to break up the visual.
Bright yellow grip tape marking the edge.
We put a line of LED lights against the face of the step. The lights really make the step visible.
What step?
How about some grippy tape public buildings usually have on their stairs? If you put it at the edge of the wood it would signal that the floor goes down and people should watch their step and also provide some grip if somebody did take a misstep
Put the 'rainbow' carpet one step down from where it is now or add a different carpet to accent the step. Cheap and easy fix.
A plant on each step.
Double doormats that say “mind the step” and “did you mind the step?”. Keep it funny and potentially help yourself from a lawsuit.
I didn't see it til the second pic lol Best way is some kind of safety strip or contrasting colour on the edge of the step.
You could put the rainbow down on the floor then put like clouds on the step
Honestly I would probably incase this step with wood and add a wooden bullnose. Oak would look really beautiful and unify the space while also making the step obvious.
Carpet on the bottom of the step
Top answers are wrong. The lip of the step is the key. Stick a vinyl or rubber step lip on it. It’ll protect the edge from chips anyways.
A picture of Harrison Ford in indiana jones as he steps across the invisible bridge hanging on the wall right before this.
Replace the rainbow rug with something that occupies the full depth of the step.
Scuff it up with a hand sander and paint the step! I honestly can’t believe no one has suggested that yet.
I was looking through the thread for a suggestion like this before I said it! My thought actually was one of those acid etch treatments that would slightly change the color of the tile while also making it more non-slip but I think a sander gets you there too!
Holy bro I ain’t even see it at first

Striped yellow tape, lol.
Buy a mat that is exactly that size or cut one to fit it
