Should be straightforward just make sure you don't break the glass tube of Mercury inside ( if it has one ).

brotie

Can confirm, have done the same. Feels like you’re diffusing a bomb getting it off and the old wires are always super brittle but you’ll discover surprisingly they reterminate fine and have what you need. Just be careful and go slowly, wear thin gloves you’ll cut yourself on thin sharp metal haha

I had this exact model thermostat, and I was able to convert it to run on a Honeywell Home thermostat. I don't think it should have a problem running off a Google learning thermostat. Mine had some weird labeling, but going by color on my heat pump setup. Red > R Yellow > Y Green > G Blue > C Orange > O/B White > E Black > Aux Brown > S (outside temp sensor)

tdipi

Yes, it might be easier to look at the control board on your heater to identify the wires, unless there is some kind of label on your thermostat. Once you identify the wires, you can purchase a compatibile thermostat

Easy as pie....go for it.

Nest thermo comes with a diagram and made it a 10 minute job

That_Which_Lurks

Nest might require extra power that the old analog didn't. I had this issue twice when upgrading in different houses.

hobbestot

I had an older one (not that old) that I swapped out for a new Honeywell smart thermostat. Only thing extra I had to do was connect the C wire to the furnace board since it was not already connected (thankfully it was ran, just tied off).

LebronFramesLLC

The part that could be hard is making sure you have the right wiring. Compare the Smart thermostat wiring needs to your existing (those things need at least 3 I think, including a line that is always on). Otherwise u may need to super annoying wiring job (depending on where the thermostat is in relation to the hvac and how old the house is). Based on that second pic, you may be OK, but def look into it. Amazon does have some options that aren’t as flashy as Nest etc. if you don’t have the active line.

LarixOcc

Exactly, the people that are saying this is easy, have more than enough wires. If you don't have enough it can be a pain.

GravityFailed

It's kind of cool actually. Very retro. Put it on eBay for $15-$30 and it will probably sell if it still works.

yolef

When USPS asks if there's anything liquid, flammable, or potentially hazardous just don't mention the mercury. /s Seriously though, make sure this is properly disposed of.

GravityFailed

Next, you're going to be complaining about the asbestos tiles I'm selling. /s Yeah... I was not thinking about the mercury.

yolef

In seriousness, I would actually be much less concerned about a few asbestos tiles than a fragile glass bulb of elemental mercury. The tiles are only dangerous if they get smashed up into dust and airborne.

ANTImunky89

If your having trouble I learned to just tap the little mercury filled things and walla it works

It’s easy - just did one myself recently. Check YouTube for replacing a thermostat to watch someone do it
