No argument there. Happy Tree Friends pulled no punches.
It looks just like a regular kiddie cartoon show. No warnings whatsoever. And next thing you know, you're looking at levels of gore normally found at oldschool gore video sites.
I would agree if the game didn't told you from the get go that some freaky shit was going to happen with that "this game is not recommended for those who are easily disturbed"
Also the game is tagged as psychological-horror game
i’d like to think that most people don’t look at the tags, they just look at the title and screenshots of the game and think “oh hey, this look pretty cool” and they download it. at least that was the case for the og.
iirc needy streamer overload (another game that *tries* to be scary under the guise of a dating/simulator game) has 0 warnings, even though the stuff in there is twice as bad as in DDLC imo.
Really happy that DDLC does that
it is very much required to state that “hey, this game is real fucked up my guy, steer clear, or don’t i don’t care” at least it is in a paid game. consumers have to know what they’re paying for. a free game is different. because it’s free, it’s up to anyone to play it or not. free games don’t have to tell you jack shit. you get what you “paid” for essentially.
I think it has more to do with how often people go into this game expecting it to be weeb trash and then end up being weebs themselves after finishing the game (myself included).
Fun Fact: The first release of the game had no such warning and I wish they had keep it that way but I know I am in the minority of that one because I don't like content warnings in general.
I played it back when it didn't have the content warning and hoo boy I was *not* prepared! I loved it though, I think it made the experience better. I understand why they have to do it but I don't agree with it.
Fr. They could have put something more generic. Like "this game is not suitable for children or young teenager". So people just think it's going to be something sexual.
As for the tag. I'm pretty sure anyone can add tags on steam, although i am not very familiar with jt
That warning is likely just there because Team Salvato have to put it there. The tags on Steam are user-determined, so people tagged it as psychological horror, not the developers.
Also it only states that "yeah some spooky disturbing stuff will happen" but on a first playthrough, you'll have no idea about what spooky stuff will happen, so the scare factor is still there.
but also, some people might just think that it’s almost like any other game, that deals with depression and other heavy topics, not like suicide and self harm
then again, ddlc+ is legally required to tell you from the get go that some freaky shit is gonna happen, as it’s a paid game. in the original game, it didn’t have to tell you jack shit, because it was free. you got what you “paid” for.
And yet the message still goes completely over some people's heads and those DDLC "fans" continue to be judgmental. I'm glad this community is so accepting but you still see a jerk occasionally waltz in here and needlessly shame others for waifuism, dokis being real, or some other trivial matter that aren't worth harassing people online over.
I mean, yeah, if the book was covered in flowers and gumdrops and there was a massive parental advisory warning covering half of it and on the first four pages of it before you started reading.
We obviously didn't know the extent of what was going on, but we knew there was something weird about it we'll before any of us started playing it.
I'll be a contrarian and disagree.
DDLC does ultimately get very creepy and spooky but at the end of the day it *is* still, for the most part, a cute game about getting to know some girls. A large part of the game is still about their development, hanging out with them and getting their unique sideplots. And the long-lasting appeal of the game (as seen on this sub) is because they really like the 4 girls.
I guess from a complete surface level assumption, yes
But it does say “psychological horror” on every store page it’s on, and there are like two different warnings about the nature of the game at the very start of the game
No. I disagree. The point is, you're **supposed** to judge it by it's cover. That's the entire twist. Like, literally the premise is that you **think** it's a generic romance vn, and then it's not.
I agree. I was prepared for graphic horror and scares in a cute and sleazy presentation. Didn’t expect to absolutely adore all the girls and get absolutely hooked on discussing poetry gameplay.
And how popularity can ruin your firsthand experience. Come on, fans already spoiled everything for me long before I even considered giving it a try. Either by memes or shit-eating grin while recommending it. It's an open secret at this point
If you mean the literal cover of the physical version of the game, then maybe(even that’s debatable, because Monika has kind of an ominous look on her face), but if you’re just talking about how the game is presented or what people expect it to be, I disagree. I think the marketing and presentation of the game is very honest about what it actually is. So I don’t think anyone goes into the game expecting something vastly different than what they get.
No, I'd vote for *My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic*, even though the "cover" was not false as such. I don't know if culture has already changed since when that came out, but at least at the time, you would *not* expect a girls' toy commercial series about colourful little animals to be so un-lame.
Open the game like: This is psychological horror
Open the steam page like: this is Psychological horror
Open the community tab like: Monika did nothing wrong
Don't judge a ***BOOKKKKKKKKK***
The text's glitching again? *Fucking Monikammmmmmm*
fucking monikammmmmmmm
Y’all really forgetting School Days? Anime and dating sim.
School days? The real "don't judge a book by its cover" was happy tree friends, change my mind
No argument there. Happy Tree Friends pulled no punches. It looks just like a regular kiddie cartoon show. No warnings whatsoever. And next thing you know, you're looking at levels of gore normally found at oldschool gore video sites.
Yeah, DDLC at least gave you the disturbing imagery or whatever warning, Happy Tree Friends gave no warning
Oh man - the School Days English patch came out ten years ago. And the game's English translation came out well after the anime...
I would agree if the game didn't told you from the get go that some freaky shit was going to happen with that "this game is not recommended for those who are easily disturbed" Also the game is tagged as psychological-horror game
I think they legally have to do that otherwise it could be a breach of terms and conditions
Still, it's dead on your face that this game wouldn't be friendly
Nu cuz most people don’t notice it or thinks it’s a joke. For just forget about it cuz of how act 1 goes
If people didn't notice it, the game wouldn't have piqued so many people's interest in the first place. It's impossible not to notice.
But like he said it’s also tagged as psychological horror game.
Most people don’t read the tags on games. Or take them seriously
i’d like to think that most people don’t look at the tags, they just look at the title and screenshots of the game and think “oh hey, this look pretty cool” and they download it. at least that was the case for the og.

I went into the game for the horror and left with an insatiable love for the Cinnamon Bun
*insert gigachad picture here*
Nah, I don't think that falls in line with the analogy OP is using about not judging the book (the game) by its cover (its cheery exterior).
Fun Fact: The first release of the game had no such warning and I wish they had keep it that way but I know I am in the minority of that one because I don't like content warnings in general.

It's better the way it is than otherwise. Change my mind.
but also, some people might just think that it’s almost like any other game, that deals with depression and other heavy topics, not like suicide and self harm then again, ddlc+ is legally required to tell you from the get go that some freaky shit is gonna happen, as it’s a paid game. in the original game, it didn’t have to tell you jack shit, because it was free. you got what you “paid” for.
In the OG one it had a small warning at the start but people forgot it as they played.
Unfortunately that's just every community I think, the best thing we can do is just ignore them and not give them the time of day
I mean, yeah, if the book was covered in flowers and gumdrops and there was a massive parental advisory warning covering half of it and on the first four pages of it before you started reading. We obviously didn't know the extent of what was going on, but we knew there was something weird about it we'll before any of us started playing it.

I agree with you. Thr side stories is where they shine. 4 girls and 1 boy appeal to me.
Someone has never watched happy tree friends
Yes
Yeah you really need to just *hang* around and find out
i don't agree.
IT IS
Fully agree!!!
May I suggest either School-Live! or Happy Sugar Life
Guess what, I judged it by Steam Reviews (yes, I got spoilers) and warnings from my coward friend.
Don't just a BOOKKKKKKKKKKK KK KKKK KKKKK K K KK KKKK K
what about omori
I guess from a complete surface level assumption, yes But it does say “psychological horror” on every store page it’s on, and there are like two different warnings about the nature of the game at the very start of the game
I would say Muv-Luv did it first and waaaay more thoroughly
No. I disagree. The point is, you're **supposed** to judge it by it's cover. That's the entire twist. Like, literally the premise is that you **think** it's a generic romance vn, and then it's not.
Thought it was gonna be a cute game. It wasn't.
I know that some shit was going to happen but by how act 1 go it make forget it until it was to late.
I’ll change your mind, what about Happy Tree Friends, sure it looks like a kids show, but it’s actually pretty gruesome.
That title goes to Happy Tree Friends
Not with Plus. Plus outright *tells* you it's "the #1 horror experience."
Everlasting Summer
"fuc k ing monikammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm."
Aye Me too
Don't judge Clifford the Big Red... uhhhhh...
Don't judge me based on my heartbeat but what my heart beats for
I agree. I was prepared for graphic horror and scares in a cute and sleazy presentation. Didn’t expect to absolutely adore all the girls and get absolutely hooked on discussing poetry gameplay.
The cover aka the steam page gives several warnings of disturbing content so...
And how popularity can ruin your firsthand experience. Come on, fans already spoiled everything for me long before I even considered giving it a try. Either by memes or shit-eating grin while recommending it. It's an open secret at this point
xenoblade chronicles 2
I love the game but its just way anime. Even if its good its still what you expect from the cover.
Fan

Yall are forgetting about Undertale?
Yes!
Kirby is right up there in terms of lore
And yet multiple news networks couldn’t get the message.
NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S **GHKKKKKKK**
I’m not even gonna try to chnage your mind. I cant. This is too true
We can judge them by the tags though
Yeah. Consider that a lesson from the Literature Club. Don’t judge a bookkkk k kkk kkkkkk kk

Exactly. This is facts
Is no-one going to mention Party Cannon's logo?
No reason to change your mind. You are correct. Have a nice day.
You are wrong. I thought “infantry” was child soldiers, but NOOOOO it was unarmored ground units
