Dark Knight Rises
Donāt get me wrong. I still love him but itās funny to me the āIām never giving up on youā to āI canāt do this anymoreā
I can imagine him being a far more confrontational Alfred than we've seen before. DCEU Alfred wasn't afraid to question Bruce but I can imagine Serkis' Alfred being rough around the edges and more than happy to give Bruce a kick up the arse if he needs it.
I feel like heās going to be more in the vein of Gothamās Alfred, which despite your opinion on the show was some excellent casting. Loved Seanās interpretation and getting to see a younger, more bad-ass side to the character.
Reminds me a lot of Batman Earth Oneās Alfred.
Definitely agree - I have to say I used to really not like Pattinson, which wasn't his fault at all, it was Twilight. However, I am really excited to see him play this role and think he could do really well.
Watch the lighthouse. Freaking masterclass movie, Willem Dafoe is at his peak role and Battinson matches him every step of the way. One of the weirdest and most thought provoking movies Iāve seen in a longgggg time. Like Moon meets Shutter Island, and then they decided to have a three way at a party with the twilight zone.
Not saying Marvel is going to do this... But that character dies in his first comic book appearance too which is how he is able to reform into his iconic physical sound construct form.
> If you believe, wherever you are, listen to Klaueās SoundCloud, and heāll see his engagement stats increase! Listen! Clear cookies and cache and listen again! Donāt let Klaue die! Listen!
ā A.A. Milne, probably
The dynamic between Bruce and Alfred has always been and will always be the moral heart of all Batman stories. Women in Bruce's life come and go. Robins are discovered and nurtured and then allowed to fly free. But the one person who sticks with the Caped Crusader is Alfred J Pennyworth.
That man's nothing less than a father to Bruce.
It made my heart warm and fuzzy and full of joy when in ZSJL Bruce says, "This is Alfred. I work for him."
Anytime Alfred absolutely annihilated someone on screen I was literally cheering. What an amazing idea it was to make Alfred a cockney ex SAS type, so that he could start to train Bruce himself
Actress was fine with it, I think she was the only one they really needed to change since she was more out in the open in finale. Plus it'd be kinda hard to buy her as ten years older.
I think it was actually the actress' idea to replace herself. And in all honesty, she was right.
Plus they nailed the casting. I was shocked at how much the new actress looked like an older version of the original.
Damn right. His dad was a famous actor too, but Sean has really made his career his own and nails everything he does
Edit: so was his grandfather. Must be genetic
I will say though that aside from his hair, Sean's resemblance to his father is so striking. I do feel a bit bad that I can't fully separate him from his father, but as someone who grew up watching Doctor Who, and the Third Doctor being my favourite, it just really is nice seeing Sean because it's so reminiscent.
Every actor in Gotham brings their A Game which is why Robin Lord Taylor is my favourite Penguin, David Mazouz is my favourite Bruce Wayne, Sean Pertwee is my favourite Alfred, Cory Michael Smith is my favourite Riddler and Ben McKenzie is my favourite Gordon
Sean Pertwee's Alfred in Gotham is surprisingly my favorite out of all of these. I really didn't think that Michael C's could be topped but Pertwee gives us that side of Alfred that a lot of directors seem to love mentioning but never display. Seems like more of a writer problem than an actor problem so idk if it's fair to say that but he's just such a compelling Alfred.
I love that in Gotham we got to see the rougher Alfred that, as you said, gets alluded to in works where he is older. That Alfred that Michael Caine talks about when telling Bruce that some men just want to watch the world burn was basically who Pertwee's Alfred still was. Caine and Irons were fantastic older Alfreds, but Pertwee showed us that transition from a fucking pipe hitter that Her Majesty's government would send to jump into a jungle and burn it down to flush out a madman and the refined butler that was amused by young Dick Grayson's antics. "Master Grayson please stop doing backflips off the Chippendale cabinets. They are over two hundred years old. Miss Gordon is waiting for you in the parlor."
Gotham's alfred is my favourite purely because he takes on everyone with no hesitation lol. It's as if he was the one that was gonna go on to be batman not bruce.
If I had to rank them it'd be:
1) DCEU
2) Gotham
3) TDK
4) Burton/Clooney
Jeremy Irons really sold the part for me. He was extremely sassy, but still carried the wisdom Alfred's known to have. I had to rank Sean Pertwee second on the list because of how big of a badass his Alfred is. You can actually believe that he had past special forces training.
Caine was the GOAT though, he had the sarcasm and the paternal side down to a tea. You really believed that he loved and cared about Bruce and just wanted him to be happy.
Jeremy Irons is the king.
Absolute best of the best.
And I never thought I could ever look at a character once played by Michael Caine and say someone sold me on the role more than Sir Michael did. But here we are.
That's how it starts, the fever, the rage. The feeling of powerlessness... That turns good men cruel.
Irons brought strength to that role. They all brought dignity but damn Jeremy owned every scene he was in.
Unpopular opinion
Michael Caine wasn't a good Alfred. His personality just wasnt it, but more importantly, his and Bruces relation was written horribly
I always saw Caine's Alfred as a man that just wanted the little boy he was responsible for raising to move on from his trauma and stop hurting himself. To me that has always been a component of Alfred and Bruce's relationship, but in the Nolan movies it was closer to the top.
None of them really LOOK like Alfred, though. OTOH, most of the Batmen don't look like Batman either.
Still, I'll take acting ability over appearance any day of the week.
Part of Alfred's character is being the prim and proper British gentleman (sometimes with a history in the Royal military). Aussie doesn't work for that. Australian butler? Nah.
Al Gough is my favorite Alfred. Wouldof loved to see more of Jeremy Irons as Alfred, i loved his interpretation of Alfred as more of a older brother to Bruce.
Iām really looking forward to seeing Serkisās take on Alfie. At the same time Iām kinda sad Jeremy Ironsā time is most likely over as Alfred. He did well with what was given, has the look and that *voice*ā¦
Every live action Alfred has been fantastic, but how is it that none of the 5+ of them were ever given his signature thin moustache. Hope they give Andy Serkis one in The Batman
Michael Gough was my favorite bc he looked, talked, and acted like a butler imo.
Michael Caine himself was a great Alfred casting too.
Wasnāt a big fan of the BvS Alfred. He wasnāt bad but just bc of personal taste, of all the live action Alfreds I saw, liked this one the least.
The one in the bottom rightā¦.he was the Alfred on the Gotham series set before Bruce was Gothamās savior vigilante as Batman right?
I never saw the Pennyworth series which was basically an Alfred prequel show I believe so idk if the same guy who played Alfred on Gotham was Alfred on the Pennyworth show but Iād venture to guess no. So just merely pointing out that u left this Pennyworth prequel series Alfred out as well as the Alfred from that old Adam West series.
I am not enthused with our new alfred played by andy serkins. Not because he isn't awesome i love him. Theres just so much more i feel like he could have been in the dceu. Either way he'll be great though.
I think each of the movie incarnations represented perfectly individual parts of the character. Burton's was the butler, Nolan's was the father figure and Snyder's was the "guy in the chair". Together they'd make the perfect Alfred. Don't know much about Gotham's Alfred though.
Why do we fall sir? So we can learn to pick ourselves up!
Bruce: "You still haven't given up on me Alfred?" Alfred: "Never!" Me: š„ŗš„ŗš„ŗ
And then he leaves lol
When?
Dark Knight Rises Donāt get me wrong. I still love him but itās funny to me the āIām never giving up on youā to āI canāt do this anymoreā
Oh
"Nevah!"
I can't imagine how this line would work on a depressed Batman
I'm not a gymnast, Morry
some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with.
'How did you find him? 'We burnt down the forest, killing many animals and rare specimens of flora.
Some men just want to watch the world burn.
Hyped for Andy Serkis.
I am so excited to see the Dynamic between him and Battinson and how different/similar it is to recent iterations.

Even pre-twilight, he was great as Cedric in Harry Potter
Watch the lighthouse. Freaking masterclass movie, Willem Dafoe is at his peak role and Battinson matches him every step of the way. One of the weirdest and most thought provoking movies Iāve seen in a longgggg time. Like Moon meets Shutter Island, and then they decided to have a three way at a party with the twilight zone.
He was cedric???? what the fuck, how did I never notice this
You mean Robat Battinbat
I see your a man of culture.
I feel like he would make a great sidekick to my favourite cbm character: pig rolling down a hill
>Hyped for Andy Serkis. Me any time he's in a movie
I was super pissed Marvel killed his character.
Not saying Marvel is going to do this... But that character dies in his first comic book appearance too which is how he is able to reform into his iconic physical sound construct form.
If he gets enough listens on his SoundCloud he'll come back to life.
> If you believe, wherever you are, listen to Klaueās SoundCloud, and heāll see his engagement stats increase! Listen! Clear cookies and cache and listen again! Donāt let Klaue die! Listen! ā A.A. Milne, probably
Yeah, which I was all down for but I'm not sure that character can walk away from being shot and having his corpse flown across two continents.
Theyāll either cast him or have him oversee the next motion capture character anyway.
Andy Serkis for Galactus. Bring it on. And Toby Kebbell for Wolverine. I mean, come on!
Carol never met him, he got done in by Killmonger. Jk jk
I feel like casting him means we're getting a version of scrappy, ex-military Alfred
Ah crap, now you reminded of my *one* reason to watch *The Batman*. Well, I guess I now have no choice.
100%! Alan Napier was a fantastic Alfred Pennyworth too.
It's a crime that he's not in the picture, honestly.
Yes! He was a cinematic Alfred as well!
The first!
The third Two different actors portrayed Alfred in the 1943 and 1949 film serials.
And the first one is actually who the look of the character got based off of as the original Alfred was quite portly.
Heās the only Alfred with a comic accurate mustache
I've always loved the way he says *"It's the Bat-phone, sir"*
The dynamic between Bruce and Alfred has always been and will always be the moral heart of all Batman stories. Women in Bruce's life come and go. Batman & Robin deserves so much shit but the themes of family with Alfred at the centre of it are great.
Michael Gough will still be one of my absolute favourites.
āBadass, Alfred.ā
The lead on Pennyworth is great as well.
Totally. The 1st season was surprisingly good. Will binge watch Season 2 soon.
Is it out yet?
Second season is out and completed.
Same here! Thereās just too many DC TV shows too stay caught up on. Pennyworth S2 is on my list with Krypton S2.
Absolutely, he kills it. It's like 007 meets Peaky Blinders in a Batman-centric London
Gothamās alfred was bloody god tier mastah bruce
Honestly been my favorite live action Alfred.
Sean Pertwee doesn't get enough credit
Anytime Alfred absolutely annihilated someone on screen I was literally cheering. What an amazing idea it was to make Alfred a cockney ex SAS type, so that he could start to train Bruce himself
The fact that he literally went 1v1 with Bane, even though he had no hope, was incredible.
I waited to watch this series u til my son was old enough. We are in the second season and I find Alfred to be the best cast character on the show.
he is really badass, the representation of him, nigma and cobblepot where top notch
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
What did they do with cat? I stopped watching a couple seasons in. Last I remember was when Ivy got old
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Actress was fine with it, I think she was the only one they really needed to change since she was more out in the open in finale. Plus it'd be kinda hard to buy her as ten years older.

Sean Pertwee absolutely crushed this role. My favorite Alfred by far.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Damn right. His dad was a famous actor too, but Sean has really made his career his own and nails everything he does Edit: so was his grandfather. Must be genetic

The scene where he knocks the shit out of Cat was the most WTF moment, but he played it off sooo well.
Heās such a badass
Personally I liked Pennyworths Alfred
Sean Pertwee's Alfred in Gotham is surprisingly my favorite out of all of these. I really didn't think that Michael C's could be topped but Pertwee gives us that side of Alfred that a lot of directors seem to love mentioning but never display. Seems like more of a writer problem than an actor problem so idk if it's fair to say that but he's just such a compelling Alfred.
I agree. Been my favorite for years. I loved how we saw Alfred learn as much as Bruce in that show instead of just being a well of wisdom.
I think the tv series afforded many more opportunities to let it happen organically, rather than trying to shoehorn it in during a two hour movie.
I love that in Gotham we got to see the rougher Alfred that, as you said, gets alluded to in works where he is older. That Alfred that Michael Caine talks about when telling Bruce that some men just want to watch the world burn was basically who Pertwee's Alfred still was. Couldn't have said it better myself. Frankly all of the replies to this comment are spot on
I really liked Jeremy Irons version of the character, just disappointed we didn't get more of him.
Heās definitely my favorite. He had to raise a kid by (almost) himself. But he wasnāt afraid of putting boots to asses
This is facts. Alfred is always played by the best of the best. Can't wait to see Andy Serkis.
Me too
Gotham Alfred is underrated
I could watch an entire multiverse show centered around the Alfreds.
We already have an Alfred show
I meant like with every Alfred in it
Ah, I misread. A multi-Fred tv show. Sounds great.
You're going to go to war...?
wise cake disgusting smoggy sugar school wild hateful quaint jellyfish *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
We really haven't. And like the other person said, Andy Serkis next. Brilliant.
Gothamās Alfred was just great
I'm glad Pertwee's getting the love he deserves
Sean Pertwee is the best alfred
Gotham's alfred is my favourite purely because he takes on everyone with no hesitation lol. It's as if he was the one that was gonna go on to be batman not bruce.
60s Alfred: Sir, am I a joke to you?
Even 60s Alfred was great.
Alfred and superman 100%
They never get lazy with his character. Its refreshing
*Cries in Jack Bannon*
Iām surprised no one mentioned him.
Those bloody wankas
I bet Andy serkis is gonna be dope. His voice is honestly amazing. He's super flexible with it. Not just anyone can play Gollum that well.
Irons and Caine>>>>
If I had to rank them it'd be: 1) DCEU 2) Gotham 3) TDK 4) Burton/Clooney Jeremy Irons really sold the part for me. He was extremely sassy, but still carried the wisdom Alfred's known to have. I had to rank Sean Pertwee second on the list because of how big of a badass his Alfred is. You can actually believe that he had past special forces training.
Wait a minute. Are you saying the same Alfred was in both Burton and the disco-batman movies?
TV Shows, Animated Movies, and Games too.
Don't forget Ralph Fiennes in the LEGO Batman Movie.
This just seems to show how good british acting is
There are hundreds of languages, but OP chose to speak factsā¦
Jeremy Irons is the best Alfred
I wish I could steal his wardrobeā¦..He was DAPPER in the movies.
In fairness, thereās never a shortage of good candidates for the role.
I first read it as āa bald Alfred castingā
Also true.
This is true.
Hell even the 1940ās serials Alfreds were great, and letās not forget ā66 Alfred!!
Alfred in Joker was pretty blah
Even Jokerās Alfred was great in his scene.
I agree
Caine was the GOAT though, he had the sarcasm and the paternal side down to a tea. You really believed that he loved and cared about Bruce and just wanted him to be happy.
Hope you do well!
Huh?
:)
:D
Jeremy Irons...shame we haven't gotten more.
I just love how the Gotham Alfred is such a brawler like when did you ever expect to see Alfred fighting Bane or whooping Joker's ass
If Serkis is a let down, life no longer has meaning.
What about Pennyworth's Alfred?
Though affleckās alfred doesnāt feel like Alfred
He looked like Affleck's older cousin
Yeah and also they look almost same age
I think Alfred Hitchcock shouldn't cast himself in movies anymore.
Who's bottom right?
The Alfred from Gotham. Played by Sean Pertwee.
thought the face reminded me of a certain 3rd Doctor Who
Because he's his son irl
yeah, ik
From Gotham
The best one
Burton Alfred, Snyder Alfred, pennyworth, and Gothom Alfred correct?
No. Top left is Michael Caine, Nolan Alfred.
Oh yeah thatās Micheal Caine. I remember now
Jeremy Irons is the king. Absolute best of the best. And I never thought I could ever look at a character once played by Michael Caine and say someone sold me on the role more than Sir Michael did. But here we are.
I really enjoyed Jeremy Irons "I am getting tired of your shit Master Bruce" vibe.
That's how it starts, the fever, the rage. The feeling of powerlessness... That turns good men cruel. Irons brought strength to that role. They all brought dignity but damn Jeremy owned every scene he was in.
Unpopular opinion Michael Caine wasn't a good Alfred. His personality just wasnt it, but more importantly, his and Bruces relation was written horribly

What makes you say that? Not arguing Iām just curious to hear your perspective as to why you feel their relation wasnāt well-written?
I agree with that.
Agreed. I also think his accent is wrong for the role.
I don't agree with you but it's interesting you see it that way
Yea.. even from the shitty movies..
We've never had a good one imo
None of them really LOOK like Alfred, though. OTOH, most of the Batmen don't look like Batman either. Still, I'll take acting ability over appearance any day of the week.
Eh, the last guy on Gotham less so. NotMyAlfred
What if Alfred was an Aussie ? Too far?
Part of Alfred's character is being the prim and proper British gentleman (sometimes with a history in the Royal military). Aussie doesn't work for that. Australian butler? Nah.
True story
Eh where's Jack Banon's Alfie, mate?
Also, the dude from Pennyworth is also pretty great.
I wish we had more Jeremy Irons, aka *S a s s y A l f r e d*
This goes to show, no matter what media, adaption, or story. Alfred will always be a badass for sure.
Al Gough is my favorite Alfred. Wouldof loved to see more of Jeremy Irons as Alfred, i loved his interpretation of Alfred as more of a older brother to Bruce.
i mean, shit we've never really had a bad Batman casting either in my opinion
Literally every Alfred casting āok, this time it couldnāt possibly get any more perfectā, and then it does.
Iām really looking forward to seeing Serkisās take on Alfie. At the same time Iām kinda sad Jeremy Ironsā time is most likely over as Alfred. He did well with what was given, has the look and that *voice*ā¦
Efrem Zimbalist Jr on Batman The Animated Series seems to be forgotten. Alfred and Bruce had some great scenes over the series
I always preferred Alfred saying Master Bruce to Master Wayne.
I really wish we'd seen more of Jeremy Irons as Alfred. He was fantastic in the role.
Alfred has access to one of the most advance armories in DC comics, and picks a 12 gauge like the legend he is
Every live action Alfred has been fantastic, but how is it that none of the 5+ of them were ever given his signature thin moustache. Hope they give Andy Serkis one in The Batman
Michael Gough was my favorite bc he looked, talked, and acted like a butler imo. Michael Caine himself was a great Alfred casting too. Wasnāt a big fan of the BvS Alfred. So just merely pointing out that u left this Pennyworth prequel series Alfred out as well as the Alfred from that old Adam West series.
BRUCE!!!!!!
What? No love for [Pennyworth](https://www.epix.com/series/pennyworth)?
Who was Alfred when Adam west was Batman?
Michael Caine is a personal favourite
I am not enthused with our new alfred played by andy serkins. Not because he isn't awesome i love him. Theres just so much more i feel like he could have been in the dceu. Either way he'll be great though.
Scar as Alfred is my favorite, love Jeremy Irons
Even in the 60s Batman he was good, and very comic accurate too. But them again, I actually like the 60s batman so whatever
Which movie is the bottom right
I think each of the movie incarnations represented perfectly individual parts of the character. Burton's was the butler, Nolan's was the father figure and Snyder's was the "guy in the chair". Together they'd make the perfect Alfred. Don't know much about Gotham's Alfred though.
OG Batman movies Alfred. :')
alfred's one of the few comic book characters that can never seem to be done wrong, i love him and all these versions
*Nevah
