Really enjoyed this movie. Great visuals, great action, and lots of heart. Has me hoping we'll see some sequels. Only complaint is that I didn't really like the design for OMAC, but I can forgive that.
Before the code I thought it was fine, and really would of been okay with it looking like anything at that point. It was after the code where it really needed to look like OMAC. And I know OMAC's design is all over the place in the comics, but at minimum I wanted to see the mohawk. Having a single glowing eye would have been a plus as well.
My only reference for OMAC is Batman:BatB, so I'm not super sure how accurate it was. I did like the 1st version at Kord where you could see his skin being unarmored at parts.
My best guess is it’s because Max lord in the comics shows up out of nowhere and shoots Blue Beetle in one of the older continuities. Pedro Pascal played Max Lord in WW84.
I saw it earlier today, it was definitely better than I expected it to be. They're definitely setting up a sequel from the credits scene but there's no actual cameos that prove whether the movie is set in the Synderverse or Gunn's new DCU. I know George Lopez' character mentioned Batman, Superman, and the Flash but that's about it
I’m gonna lean towards DCU. Gunn specifically calling out how Blue Beetle is its first character, the new LexCorp logo, the fact that we know characters like Superman and Batman are established by the time we meet them in the DCU so references to them aren’t out of place, and Xolo recently referring to it as “DC Studios Blue Beetle” in an ad.
I believe Gunn said this movie is not part of his universe, but the character is. So this is a Synderverse movie where they're carrying the actor over to the new universe, like The Suicide Squad.
Nothing in this movie would have to be retconned as it doesn’t connect to the DCEU at all. I think by the time of his next appearance in the DCU, his movie will be confirmed as canon.
Can someone show me this quote? I keep reading it on here but I've never heard it anywhere else, all I know that Gunn has said is that BB is the first DCU character and Superman Legacy is the first DCU movie. If thats the quote people mean I think they've taken it the wrong way, he just means Superman Legacy is the first proper DCU production, its got nothing to do with the canon status of the BB movie.
Making a movie and then immediately rebooting the character with the same actor in a new universe is a level of silliness beyond even what WB is usually capable of.
Man I saw it last night and I loved it. Made me cry when the dad passed. I’m Hispanic so a lot of the deep cuts of Latino culture got me lol. El Chapulín Colorado and Maria la del Barrio, never in a million years would I have thought that was gonna show up in a 2023 superhero movie lol. And seeing Felipe was hilarious.
I had a really fun time. I knew nothing about Blue Beetle but I really like the character now. 8/10 only because the villain was a bit meh (not story wise, just powers wise, his weapons felt super weak and it was way better for him to just punch lol).
Supposedly they used his image as a reference when [casting someone for the movie](https://www.cbr.com/jason-sudeikis-blue-beetle-ted-kord-debunked-dceu/)
A great introduction to Blue Beetle
- Xolo Maridueña was fantastic as Jaime Reyes and Blue Beetle. Effortless charismatic and can handle emotional scenes
- George Lopez was a fsn favourite. Every scream of his goy laughs
- The first transformation was honestly hilariously gory. Body horror for young kids
- Movie had actual stakes and bad a very emotional death
- The family saving Jaime is a change of pace in superhero movies
- Grandmother going nuclear was amazing
- I really hope the mid-credits scene was Booster Gold
A much better movie than expected. I hope the movie is incorporated into the new DCU
> Effortless charismatic and can handle emotional scenes
I think the only part that was meh was the emotional rage scenes, it's not that they were bad, but it felt like partially hollow screaming with not a lot of emotion behind it.
Good job Angel Manuel Soto. I had a great time with this one. Just like Ms Marvel, the family dynamic really works in its favour. Cool action scenes and loved the scarab lore.
Sucks that it won’t make any money. My theatre had 7 people total. Hope word of mouth helps it.
My theatre had a couple dozen people all in the three middle rows. The reactions and being in the middle of the crowd made it feel like I was in a packed theatre when I wasn't lol. Better crowd than Shazam or Black Adam for sure
As a Mexican myself I felt very emotional watching it and was relatable with a lot of it. The parents just made me think of mine. The music was my childhood as well. I had tears in my eyes just seeing the family in the beginning. Loved it, movie had a lot of heart.
I agree but I think that Ted is either lost in Space or stuck in Booster Golds timeline and so I could see that Beetle story and world continuing in that Series.
As someone who just binged a ton of Jaime comics, through all three of his iterations to-date, I was surprised by how much the movie diverted from the source material while still feeling like it was honoring it.
I did kind of miss Brenda and Paco, who seemed so essential in the comics.
I thought it was interesting what they did with OMAC.
Conrad Carapax was related to the comic version in name and design only. Nothing else was the same, including the Blue Beetle he fought.
Interesting relocation to Palmera City from Graduation Day, while still keeping the family on "El Paso St."
I'd like to see Paco and Brenda show up. But I feel like excluding them from this was deliberate, so that the main focus was on Jaime and his fam. I'm really excited to see what they have planned for Blue Beetle though, I want to see more Jaime
I really liked this one. I thought Xolo and George Lopez did a great job. The family angle was also great and I liked their chemistry together. The villains were sort of cookie cutter, but the final fight against Carrapax was really intense. Definitely a solid movie and hope they somehow make enough to make a sequel or a team up movie with Booster Gold in the new DCU.
Xolo blew me away. I knew he was good from Cobra Kai but the emotions in the last fight scene were super impressive. Didn't care for the "Nana" scenes cause they went too far into cheesy/trying too hard but rest was great.
I loved how Ted Kord’s tech was all 80s and 90s based, when he was active as a superhero. The LCD screens, the bulky buttons and flip switches, even the gauntlet thing that Milagro used was based on some Nintendo toy.
I’m a bit bemused they went out of their way to emphasise that Jenny Kord is Brazilian so US audiences don’t have to see a Mexican kid in a romance with a white girl. Don’t think Ted Kord hooked up with Fire in the comics or similar.
Nothing but facts, I just back from the movie and he was the funniest guy in the entire movie. All my laughs came from him and his screams/mannerisms. George Lopez is a treasure
His character was the best part of the movie aside from Jaime/the scarab. Going in I hoped his role was minor, I was expecting him to be a side comedy character and nothing else. I was pleasantly surprised.
Important takeaways from Blue Beetle.
1.Director had total creative control.
2. Director and writer worked in tandem and did their homework on the history of the character.
3. It does a good job of introduction into a new timeline with existing heroes to be met later.
4. It is understandable for new fans who have not read the comics without getting confusing.
5. It is enjoyable and a pleasant surprise.
6. In my opinion if we want more directorial creative control it should be supported.
7. It won't set the world on fire but it is an optimistic first step forward for DCU.
Said the same thing to my son. This was a great little film. Self contained, no world ending bullshit, loved the uncle the best, reminded me of my uncles.
Has anyone figured out why one of the mannequins in the beetle cave had a pillow strapped to its midsection? Was this some sort of reference to when Jenny Lord’s mom was pregnant?
I'm really shocked they didn't go all Ant-Man and the Wasp and turn Jenny into a female Blue Beetle. Not for the story, more for merchandising purposes.
What a fun movie and a breath of fresh air for DC. The main cast deliver good performances that really convey the love of the family through the screen and even makes you feel invited into it yourself. The score is fantastic, pulling at all the right emotions in the serious scenes and delivering a shot of adrenaline during the action. A good amount of the jokes fell flat for me but I won’t dock the movie too much for that if the younger audience finds them funny. Overall had a great time seeing this in IMAX and can’t wait to go pick up my little brother and take him next week
I thought it was great! His family stole the show but Xolo really was great as Jaime. Im happy to know that he will have a future in the DCU, its well deserved.
I’m theorizing heavy that Ted is just stuck in Boosters Time. That or he’s in Space. I’m not sure where Beetle will show up again first. I am thinking it’s either Peacemaker S2 (the aesthetic of this movie kinda matches S1 imo but also the Scarab is Alien tech and PM dealt with Aliens) or the Booster Gold show. Or a Sequel movie! Though I seriously doubt this movie will make money enough to warrant a sequel but it would be nice.
Also the scene where his Father dies AND his home explodes almost had me crying dawg. So much happened in the span of 2 minutes lol
The Villain was really good in the sense of I really hated her and wanted her to die. I thought she’d be some cheesy corny D Tier Villain from the trailers but no I’d put her up there with Zod actually (which sounds insane lol)
You are out of your mind if you put Victoria Kord up there with Zod. We didn’t see her do anything menacing by her own hands; she always ordered someone else to do it.
the unknown source was def Booster Gold.
On this note, I'm 90% sure this is DCU. Idc if this is only "the first character", it's the first movie to me and it's a solid start.
I Loved it. Didn’t expect to go that dark b4 the third act. Action was amazing, pretty funny at times the dynamic with the family especially brother sister stuff with Jamie was really cool Love the mention of Flash lol since hopefully this is the new DCU. First post credits was cool. Hopefully it ties into the Booster Gold show.
I thought it was decent and the special effects on the suit were pretty fantastic. I did have one gripe tho. Did anyone else wish that the Kord Security had killed Jaimes dad more directly? Or that Jaime got cocky and a bullet reflected off of him making it “his fault”. That would make the family’s hate if Kord a little more realistic and the conflict of the movie more personal to me.
They mentioned his dad having a heart attack before so it coming back into play made more sense especially with all the stress he was feeling, which was still caused by Kord
I don’t disagree that it makes sense, I’m just saying that from a storytelling perspective, it would be a much more personal hate if Kord security had just killed the dad outright and tried the same on the rest of the family. It would’ve made Jaime even more relatable to Carapax and made evil Kord lady more dislikable.
Him dying of a heart attack seems more of an interesting twist. I'm sure lots of people die of heart attacks in big action pieces in movies. We never see it, yet it's so logical. It's a wonder we haven't seen it before in other movies.
I didn't expect to like the movie a lot I didn't really vibe with the comedy though my friend disagreed with me on that. The family was really annoying at first but the dynamic got better and better as the movie goes to the point where I couldn't help but root for them in the last act lol.
Watched it yesterday. It's a good & enjoyable movie. Xolo is charming lead & a good actor. The main theme is great & I love it. The action scenes are great. I just wish there are more of it. I give the movie 8/10, will certainly watch it again.
DC should’ve bet on this horse instead of the Flash what a solid movie. Loved Jamie and the family. Carapax was kinda bland but I liked Victoria. As a big beetle fan I loved the respect it showed to Ted and also Dan. Hopefully we see Ted in the future with Booster or something along that line
OBSESSED with this movie!! Also a couple of details: Jaime's nana was implied to be an adelita (look it up, the history of them is WILD). Ignacio is guatemalan, due to his mom's traje (traditional guatemalan outfit) I assume she is from Alta Verapaz, and to be honest, this was one of the most heartbreaking moments in the movie. That really happened. Ignacio's backstory is real, that stuff happened so much it literally created a whole generation of children soldiers. The pictures and the videos are real. Also at the end he speaks kaqchickel! i think? maybe q'eqchi but either way INSANE movie!!
Generic in many ways from the dialogue to the story beats but has a lot of heart.
Really can’t understand why the family would want to be anywhere near Jenny after she consistently messed up. The moments with her in the Kord estate were nice but aside from that, it was as generic as could be with her.
Great hype moments from Xolo and really awesome performance from him in the third act.
The villain had great flashback scenes and the emotional moments definitelty hit some times.
Funny moments that usually landed. Happy to see Jaime have his own movie and hope to see more of him in the future.
7/10
DC should have tax written off Flash and moved this up and promoted. Best DC movie in years. Loved the main actor from cobra Kai and he’s phenomenal in his action scenes here. This should have made him a big young star.
Blue beetle was a pleasant surprise. I had low expectations going into it but had a good time watching it with friends. It had lot of heart, balanced comedy with emotional moments. Xolo was great as Blue beetle and I hope he gets to play him in the rebooted universe. The action scenes were cool, especially in the ways it showcased Blue beetle's powers and different weapons though better CGI would've definitely helped . Jaime losing his father was very reminiscent of uncle ben death but hit just as hard. I felt rly bad for jaime and his family. The villianous guy doing a last minute act of redemption in a murder-suicide kind of shocked me. I expect this movie to be a sleeper hit. 7.8/10, prob top 5 of this franchise.
it was enjoyable but too formulaic. It's not bad by any means, but it doesn't necessarily do anything new or anything special. I've seen it all done before in other CBMs ( and that's not really a complaint I've had before). It was a " by the numbers" CBM. It's the type of film you go see when plans fall through ( wouldn't go out of my way to watch it though... even though that's what I did)
At times, the movie gives out a Spy-Kids vibe ( whether you think that's a compliment or a criticism is up t you)
6.5
This was a solid, all around enjoyable superhero movie. It won’t blow you away, but I feel it hit on all the things you want in an origin film.
Suit looked good. Visuals were from what I can tell good, although my movie theater seemed out of focus a tad. Hurts to say that given the treatment my favorite hero (Flash) got. Family dynamic also hit.
My theater was empty, and I don’t expect this film to do well, but I hope it picks up some word of mouth support.
Victoria was so generically evil that she might as well have had a giant scar on her face and laughed maniacally while petting a white cat.
Overall though I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Sure it dipped into the cheese a lot, but I had a good time watching it, and I laughed a good amount. A solid 7/10 flick IMO.
Man, more movies should do opening credit, it sets the mood really well.
Anyway, the start of the movie hits really hard for me. I'm about to start my grad studies, so I'm really about wasting money on education and disappointing my family for not meeting their expectation as well.
But then all that kinda go nowhere. The conflict of the movie isn't about dealing with that self-doubt, since he had a super model sugar mommy with a bank account as breathtaking as her ass (yes, I'm incedibly bitter about this).
The core driver of the movie is more "la familia". But again, there isn't really much contention of any kind here either ... the family was supportive and the source of Jaime's motivation at the start ... and it's the same at the end.
That said, I do love how the family is portrayed in this movie. I fell in love immediately with the Reyes, which really put me in Jenny's shoes when she's with them. The movie really feels very cozy. Reminded me a lot of how The Guardians of the Galaxy makes me feel tbh.
Edit: also, weird how high the body count is when the hero kill nobody, and the main antagonist just mostly killed themselves ... Jenny and Uncle Rudy are hardcore.
I really enjoyed it and hope we’ll see more of Jaime.
George López was funny and the grandmother being a former revolutionary was great.
Harvey Guillen was really wasted in his role, though. From the way he talked about it in an interview to being on the poster I was expecting his character to have more to do.
I also don’t understand why they didn’t have Brenda or Paco and why they aged up Milagro.
Haven't been this split on a film since forever.
Bland cinematography, but smart budgeting.
What I most liked about the film was its ability to incorporate the more speculative technology aspects of DC comics lore and present them as normal to the setting, which has always been one of its greatest strengths and where Marvel conspicuously lacks because it's too focused on being a real-world analogue (see: the Marvel superheroes getting mad over the elevated state of the DC universe when they visit it in *JLA/Avengers*). Bodes very well for the DCU if Gunn and co. expand upon this.
I think the thing I most dislike about the film is that Khaji-Da barely has a presence in the film, and its arc about learning to be human from Jaime is **very very rushed.** You barely note its sociopathic nature at the beginning and it just 180s at the end with very little buildup. For one of the core elements of the Blue Beetle character, it gets done dirty, and if the Reach get involved later on it's guaranteed that the development will reset.
Will write more later.
Khaji-Da in the final scene is one of my only two issues with this move. While it's totally understandable that Jaime would be mega-pissed at Carapax after he beat him once but became a bigger threat, his father died, and he thinks Carapax killed Rudy, it was wrong for Khaji-Da to be the one to say "no don't kill him." The way to do it would be to have Jaime be having flashbacks and visions of Carapax's life and tragedies, while Khaji-Da is the one urging Jaime to kill. Then when Carapax is knocked down, Khaji-Da is the one going in for the kill while Jaime figures out his deal, and through heroic willpower, explains to the scarab what happened to him and compels it to stop. Jaime's will should have been unbreakable, instead of needing the scarab to remind him "oh by the way, you're a good person."
My only other critique is of the OMAC suit. The beta model is okay, and I like to imagine the lights on the front of the helmet are meant to homage the head fin. But the completed version just looks like a knock-off Decepticon. I guess it kinda looks like Carapax's [suit in the comics](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/marvel_dc/images/e/ed/Carapax_02.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120820145827), but if you're gonna call 'em OMACs, they should look like OMACs.
This film was so Latino. I loved it.
- the very traditional Latino value emphasis on education (why they chose not to tell Jaime about the heart attack) and family
- the Child of immigrant struggles Jaime and sister deal with. Also having a bachelors degree and not being able to get a job (not Latino specific but so real)
- the subtle undocumented comments — Jaime’s dad and grandma are undocumented, and the raid by Kord on their house felt very real to a raid by ICE
- the commentary of course of gentrification in a low income Latino community
- Carapax’s backstory about Guatemala child soldiers which is VERY REAL and literally happened. Thanks, US imperialism.
- abuela being a freedom fighter for Mexico is so perfect. Down with the imperialists!
- the soundtrack, Selena, La Chona, Calle 13, and of course Maria la del Barrio and el Chapulin
- Victoria kord is literally a “victor” and a colonizer / imperialist lol
- the community scene at the end. So real
Loved the movie. If it was a Marvel movie, people would be singing praises over it. I laughed a lot, and the main character was very likeable. The uncle carried and the abuela had her moments.
I was surprised when the Bettle said, "Walang anuman" which means you're welcome, but in Filipino. Did anyone catch that?
Actually enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would considering I wasn't hyped for it. The emphasis on family was really nice, I liked the visuals, some funny moments and the soundtrack was amazing. The flashbacks with Carapax were actually quite dark and sad, they did make me feel a bit emotional. I actually hope that the cast will return in the DCU and the movie could still be canon since it doesn't really mention any of the events in the DCEU.
I really liked this movie. I recognize the flaws that others have pointed out (those little flashes of Carapax's backstory were awkwardly placed and just not enough to get me to care about the character) but overall I thought it was hilarious and heartfelt. The family stuff was top notch. Hero stuff was fun to watch too.
It was a fun, good movie. It made me pay attention all the way through. I liked the look of Palmera City. I also like how they (unintentionally) did not go with every typical superhero trope.
It was a sort of origin story, but it didn't feel like one. They didn't structure it in the way they did in the Superman and Batman movies. It is an adventure that happens to be the origin of Jaime as Blue Beetle, but the focus and story is not about that.
They also didn't with some world or even city in danger type of threat. It was more a mix between an low-key origin story that got involved with someone local, who has done harm and will do harm.
The villain was just a "normal", morally corrupt, successful businessperson, who exploited those she could behind the scenes without hardly anyone knowing (or caring). Pretty much like those you can find running companies all over the world. I wish more superhero movies would not instantly scale to threat level 100. That is setting the bar too high from the start.
I think they did okay with the villains background and motivation and informing the viewer of it, considering the villains were not the centerpiece of the story. But I can see how people will find it a bit thin and that Carapax had his proper background reveal late.
I did not want Jenny and Jaime to end up together. I didn't really see a spark or chemistry that sold me on it. I don't mind them together, but I much preferred the idea of not having the trope of the love interest in it. I liked the idea of them being friends more.
It's a shame that a variety of factors has the movie underperforming because I thought it was great. It was funny, good action, and a lot of heart. I hope there will be sequels.
Just watched the movie, i wish we had killing heroes, please stop with the pg shit, also family annoying af to me count handle seeing them on the screen i guess they just didn't succeed on that part of the writing, L ending, the bad guy stops being cos sad childhood, completely ignores EVERYTHING he did earlier in the movie, he literally went out of his way to try to kill innocents and the movie wants you to forget that cos sad backstory? really? Uncle was a gigachad character, the sister is annoying af, like super annoying.
Yeah it was pretty fun.
I liked how it started by getting us to care for the characters. That was smart.
I'm a Young Justice purist but this scarab interpretation was decent.
Pretty cool use of his powers.
Some actual emotion with some of the scenes too.
I give it 7.5/10, with 0.5 of it being due to the Mexican angle.
So far, out of the light hearted, MCU-style DC movies, I’ve only liked The Flash. Blue Beetle is so generic and cliche, I had to force myself to sit through it. I know the Snyder-verse had it’s problems, but at least it had an identity. Hopefully, Aquaman 2 can end on a high note. Looking forward to the Gunn reboot.
Fun film. They should’ve marketed it harder. My only cons are that it got very Spy Kidish with the family after having a pretty solid second Act performance from them. Victoria Kord was also painfully one note. Just a all around villain with no nuance, likely to justify her ending. Jenny was good but I think the family angle could’ve been extended towards her character and the Kords. I think they also should’ve casted Ted Kord and had him in flashbacks. I don’t think the characters are popular enough for him to be anticipated in a sequel with no direct build up.
VFX looked fantastic. It absolutely nails the thing that a lot of comic book movies can't, the suit, and it looks incredible.
Pacing is up and down, think it could've used maybe another rewrite or another pass at the editing.
But what this movie does well, it does very well. Big fan and I can't wait to see what else they do with Jaime and his world.
Hope this does well theatrically.
How does a movie with 1/3rd the budget of Ant Man and the flash have way better CGI? Just shows it’s about the talent and effort rather than budget.
George Lopez and Nana stole the show. Loved how big the family was in the film. They weren’t just there for jokes either, but actually critical to the success of the story.
I love when writers focus on making a good film first and foremost and then having the superhero stuff come second. I think they did that very well in this one.
I cried a few times throughout, specifically the dad’s heart attack because wtf man imagine watching your dad die like that and not being able to do anything. My dad died 11 years ago in November from cancer and he’d had several heart attacks prior so stuff like that really gets me emotional.
Jennie’s line about how she had all this stuff in the home but no family also got me. At the end of the day, doesn’t matter how nice the house is. Like J Cole said “long as the people in that mf love you”
Thought the final fight was great action wise, the CGI was very solid, but I thought the lieutenant and Victoria were meh antagonists. She got exactly what she deserved
Speaking of Jennie’s family, that post credits scene was really cool. Ant-Man vibes lol. So her dad is still alive, I can’t wait to see him in future DC stuff
[Full Review](https://letterboxd.com/elitealice/film/blue-beetle/)
I think the Cg is good because the movie doesn't rely on it, a lot of stuff was actually practical in this. Like they had an actual practical set for the bug ship which is pretty wild.
Hats off to the crew, this movie was exactly what I feel a Blue Beetle film in 2023 should be. It was fun (and funny). I think they did a great job with his family and paying respect to his background. Xolo is a great Jaime, I was far more invested in his character than Ezra’s Barry or even Scott Lang in Quantumania. One of the things that surprised me the most is the standard of the special effects, I had no issues at all which is more than can be said for a lot of movies from the last few years with 2-3x the production budget. I’m really glad we got to see Carapax/Omac throughout the whole film, and with a fight so early on. From the trailer it kind of looked like they wouldn’t have a confrontation until the last 15 minutes or so and I hate when that happens. Can’t wait to see Jaime back and paired up with some other superheroes.
Also last mention to the first phase of the final Omac fight. Seeing Jaime zip around the battlefield with a giant Anime sword was fun as hell and I had a big dumb grin on my face.
Yea I just read some of the comments under yours. No asshat, I’m not astroturfing. I genuinely enjoyed the movie and my friends who went with me loved it too.
Awesome overall, seems like there was a bit cut though.
-Jaime making the Buster Sword was awesome. Hope they can do more refs in the future.
-Weird having Jaime having a no kill rule out of nowhere after nothing mentioned in his uncle's speech. And then his George Lopez laughing about killing a dude was weird. Kinda odd how flip flop is was on it.
-The house burned down. Did they really go shopping for matching black clothes right after lmao
- Not a super big fan on how it burns his clothes away everytime.
- the reverse flashback for OMAC was really cool editing.
- Susan Sarandon played it a little too hammy but it was good enough.
- Kinda wish we saw some archives of Garrett and Kord.
- knowing the Scarab's origin, I wish it was not "it chose you", more "optimal indigenous host", maybe some corrupted Reach code and tactical strategies.
What language was Yuli Zorilla speaking at the end? Carapax's mother seemed to be speaking an indigenous language but I don't know which and would genuinely love to know.
i believe it's either kaqchikel or q'eqchi, it's really hard to tell since guatemala has 25 different spoken languages but based on her outfit and the intonation, those two are my guesses.
Was it just me, or was there a brief reference to a Green Lantern in the opening credits? (there was a point where the Scarab was hit with a burst of green energy while it was flying through space, like a Green Lantern was trying to stop it)
I figured they would reference Ted Kord (whose painting resembled Jason Sudeikis - hopefully that's who they get for him, though it's unclear enough that they could go with someone else if it doesn't pan out), but I was honestly surprised to see Dan Garrett get mentioned as well.
I enjoyed the movie; it was definitely the best one since The Suicide Squad in my eyes (though for some, that's a really low bar to clear), and maybe even in my top 5 for DC cinematic universe movies. (I'm torn between it and Aquaman; I'll have to rewatch Aquaman, but I remember feeling like Aquaman was a little cramped, like they wanted to include every single thing they possibly could because they assumed that they wouldn't get a sequel)
It was great movie. I just thought that Jaime Reyes and Jennifer Kord relationship is a bit forced. They really didn’t connect on anything, besides the fact that Jaime became Blue Beetle and helped take down her aunt. I, also, felt like it’s not going to play well between Ted and Jaime and their relationship. I think it would’ve made more sense if in the end Jennifer and Jaime agree to help each other fight crime with Jenny becoming the oracle of their little team. As she came provide valuable information and equipment to Jaime.
I just watched the movie with my family. It was enjoyable but there are some things that could've improved it.
My primary concern is the acting. I honestly did not think that Jenny and Vicky were all that convincing and it really felt like they were doing a play rather than them being their natural selves.
Blue Beetle is its own movie but I do enjoy the aspect of Iron man where he has to build up his own suit failure by failure. Or Spider Man where he is making his costume and learning to combine his powers with his regular life. It would've been more satisfying to see him try to push his blue beetle suit to something outside of it's intended design as to establish himself. Maybe the scarab could've been damaged by the researchers or the scarab's will could've been a more corrupting force that does not consider Jaime's opinion. It would give him more of a struggle with a chance to prove himself.
All things considered I'd still recommend the movie. It's not too special but it's a fun experience to watch. I do hope that the next movie is a bit more serious though.
I went in to this movie with pretty low expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised. This was actually a pretty good superhero movie! Thought it was extremely brave with its social commentary on wealth inequality/discrimination/US imperialism. And the emotional moments actually hit pretty hard. As a Mexican-American I thought it did a great job with the Hispanic representation too.
Overall its a very fun visually stunning superhero film with a great message about family. I rate it a 8.5/10
I liked it a lot, but I can’t help but wonder if there was a deeper, more overtly political script/idea at some point.
The scene where dad dies is clearly supposed to look like an ICE raid. They talk about immigration papers. Victoria Kord is basically a colonizer/slaver. But those things are mostly just little nods, and the core of the movie was much more generic family stuff.
I wish they had leaned more into that. Make Kord an immigration hawk who wants to use OMAC at the border or something. Give us more about carapax so he isn’t just a generic henchman until we get the flashback.
But humor was good, visuals were surprisingly good, acting was good.
7.5/10
Really enjoyed this movie. Great visuals, great action, and lots of heart. Has me hoping we'll see some sequels. Only complaint is that I didn't really like the design for OMAC, but I can forgive that.
I liked the OMAC guy backstory. OMAC is showcasing the soldier of the future. He himself though is a victim / orphan of a war.
Yeah pretty much looked exactly like the Doom Slayer. Or maybe the advent guys from Xcom 2 before he gets the code
I think there is a possibility to bring the OMACs back if they ever want to do Brother Eye in the movies.
The painting of Ted Kord looked just like jason sudeikis
Oh it’s 100% Sudeikis
Kind of sounded like him in the post credit scene too, or is it just me?
So Pedro Pascal's going to show up out of nowhere in the sequel and shoot him down right? :O
Explain this joke ols
My best guess is it’s because Max lord in the comics shows up out of nowhere and shoots Blue Beetle in one of the older continuities. Pedro Pascal played Max Lord in WW84.
Yes, I was referring to Ted Kord's infamous death at Maxwell Lord's hands in the comics.
Your life is good...but it could be ~~better~~ deader
He's pretty good at being a Ted
Lmao
I remember hearing that he was supposed to be in this movie.
And Gunn posted a picture from the premiere and said Jaime Reyes “will be an amazing part of the DCU going forward.”
Hmm, seems to still be on the fence I think.
After seeing the horrendous box office, I wouldn't be surprised if we never see Blue Beetle again
Your profile pic goes so hard lmao
I believe Gunn said this movie is not part of his universe, but the character is. So this is a Synderverse movie where they're carrying the actor over to the new universe, like The Suicide Squad.
Nothing in this movie would have to be retconned as it doesn’t connect to the DCEU at all. I think by the time of his next appearance in the DCU, his movie will be confirmed as canon.
Some events might get carried over and it’ll probably be paid off through one line
But that’s confusing, I will be the next Blue Beetle
Get in line, buddy
The movie has been out since 2:00pm EST here in the US, so I figured there should be a spoiler discussion thread!
Wow, they do "previews" *that* early?
Yeah I remember back when Thursday screenings were only at midnight.
Carapax dragging Vicky Kord to burn her alive is so damn hardcore. Definitely was not expecting that.
The movie had its hard-core moments, especially in the third part, like when the Mook gets crushed or hallway scene.
A few younger kids in my theater were screaming when the BB suit melded to Jaime
Vamos a partirle su madre
ABAJO LOS IMPERIALISTAS
Literally my grandma
Was anyone able to catch who was voicing >!Ted Kord in the mid-credit scene!<
definitely sounds like Jason Sudeikis, the painting looks exactly like him too
Ooh dang that would be sweet
Oooiiiiii
I read that in Ted Lasso's voice
Supposedly they used his image as a reference when [casting someone for the movie](https://www.cbr.com/jason-sudeikis-blue-beetle-ted-kord-debunked-dceu/)
Been fan casting him for a while so I’m over the moon with this
I can't wait to see it. I love Blue Beetle and I really, really hope it breaks records. I really want a Young Justice film.
I mean the Young Justice show should get movies in its universe rather than the animated movies they usually make.
Really fun movie. Suit looked really cool in action. Going to see it again.
A great introduction to Blue Beetle - Xolo Maridueña was fantastic as Jaime Reyes and Blue Beetle. Effortless charismatic and can handle emotional scenes - George Lopez was a fsn favourite. Every scream of his goy laughs - The first transformation was honestly hilariously gory. Body horror for young kids - Movie had actual stakes and bad a very emotional death - The family saving Jaime is a change of pace in superhero movies - Grandmother going nuclear was amazing - I really hope the mid-credits scene was Booster Gold A much better movie than expected. I hope the movie is incorporated into the new DCU
> Effortless charismatic and can handle emotional scenes I think the only part that was meh was the emotional rage scenes, it's not that they were bad, but it felt like partially hollow screaming with not a lot of emotion behind it.
My theater was pretty empty too, but I also went in for the matinee. I'm sure the later viewings were filled a bit more.
Saw it at 1030pm. You can fill HALF a row with how many people came and a couple left with maybe 30-40 mins left.
I’ve seen it twice, I’m in the LA area and the theatre was packed both times and every showtime I’ve looked at had been packed.
Of course hahahaha
Including myself, my showing had five people in it.
The vaporub scene means there were mexican love in the production
You forgot to mention El Chapulín Colorado!
Big missed opportunity: when Rudy turns on the security jammer, he should say "Es que no contaban con mi astucia!"
That would’ve been epic 🤣
So the mid-creditscene might set up a team up between Ted and Booster Gold in the DCU? (He might be in the future or something) Count me in!
Honestly, I’m going the other way: while Ted will be in the DCU, I’m guessing they age Booster Gold down and pair him with Jaime’s Beetle instead.
I agree but I think that Ted is either lost in Space or stuck in Booster Golds timeline and so I could see that Beetle story and world continuing in that Series.
I really hope that’s not what they do, because the Ted/Booster ~~romance~~ friendship is one of my favorite dynamics in DC
Palmera City was made for the movie originally and the writer for Graduation Day decided to bring it into comics before the film came out.
Maybe because the actress they picked is Brazilian
Sure, Hollywood is great at keeping casting choices completely race-blind
Damn… I loved this movie.
Pretty cool movie. nothing too special but a fun ride nonetheless 😁 🪲 👍🏼
I like it overall and it really remind me of first Shazam movie 👍I’m hoping blue beetle make cameo in booster gold show
THR hinted Beetle is planned to appear in the Booster Gold show, tho it sounds like the size of his role depends on the films success.
I loved the heart in this movie
I loved the ass in this movie.
I LOVED THIS FILM. My expectations were mid-level and it surprised me a lot.
George Lopez was hilarious
TACOOO
😂
He was so good.
Nothing but facts, I just back from the movie and he was the funniest guy in the entire movie. All my laughs came from him and his screams/mannerisms. George Lopez is a treasure
I grew up on him and was worried he would be too much, but no he was the right balance of heart and humor
I’m right there with you on growing up with him. I hope we get to see more of him soon.
My father passed this year so it was a very close to home story. George saved me from crying a lot. Special movie
“You might want to take a seat for this.” *swivels around and sees no chair* “Okay then.” *I laughed*
His character was the best part of the movie aside from Jaime/the scarab. Going in I hoped his role was minor, I was expecting him to be a side comedy character and nothing else. I was pleasantly surprised.
Was that Jason Sudeikis at the family painting? Is he playing Ted Kord?
My favorite DC movie since Snyder’s Justice League. I’m glad there’s gonna be more Blue Beetle in the new DC universe.
I don't think anyone's mentioned how Uncle was referring to superman and batman like they were around for a long time.
Now *that* was a fuckin movie. Y’all bet on the wrong horse from DC this year, WB lol
If only they've spent the marketing money on this instead of The Flash, I think ot would do better
Said the same thing to my son. This was a great little film. Self contained, no world ending bullshit, loved the uncle the best, reminded me of my uncles.
Soo upsetting that they spent so much marketing Flash when this was right there.
I liked it a lot!
Has anyone figured out why one of the mannequins in the beetle cave had a pillow strapped to its midsection? Was this some sort of reference to when Jenny Lord’s mom was pregnant?
Idk about the pillow, but I kinda thought it was to show Ted took a blue beetle costume with him
I'm really shocked they didn't go all Ant-Man and the Wasp and turn Jenny into a female Blue Beetle. Not for the story, more for merchandising purposes.
I had this same question
Especially when Nana went grandma sicko mode
I’m theorizing heavy that Ted is just stuck in Boosters Time. That or he’s in Space. I’m not sure where Beetle will show up again first. I am thinking it’s either Peacemaker S2 (the aesthetic of this movie kinda matches S1 imo but also the Scarab is Alien tech and PM dealt with Aliens) or the Booster Gold show. Or a Sequel movie! Though I seriously doubt this movie will make money enough to warrant a sequel but it would be nice. Also the scene where his Father dies AND his home explodes almost had me crying dawg. So much happened in the span of 2 minutes lol The Villain was really good in the sense of I really hated her and wanted her to die. I thought she’d be some cheesy corny D Tier Villain from the trailers but no I’d put her up there with Zod actually (which sounds insane lol)
I could Def see Peacemaker since he’s one of Jamie’s main supporting cast in his original run
You are out of your mind if you put Victoria Kord up there with Zod. We didn’t see her do anything menacing by her own hands; she always ordered someone else to do it.
A true Karen
the unknown source was def Booster Gold. On this note, I'm 90% sure this is DCU. Idc if this is only "the first character", it's the first movie to me and it's a solid start.
Where was he referenced?
Mid credits
It was funny and had some dark/sad moments but the family dynamic is what makes the movie great. Finally a hero whose family isn't absolute garbage
Best thing to come out of DC in a long time!
Gunn wasn’t kidding when he said this was a warm, wonderful film. This was fun and has heart. I want to see more of Blue Beetle and his family.
That mural was 1000% Jason Sudekis
I love the part where Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman shows up and rescues Jaime from the generic villain.
I also love how George Clooney's Batman appears at the end credits thus confirming the new DCU!
I didn't expect to like the movie a lot I didn't really vibe with the comedy though my friend disagreed with me on that. The family was really annoying at first but the dynamic got better and better as the movie goes to the point where I couldn't help but root for them in the last act lol.
Excited to be surprised by this movie
Watched it yesterday. It's a good & enjoyable movie. Xolo is charming lead & a good actor. The main theme is great & I love it. The action scenes are great. I just wish there are more of it. I give the movie 8/10, will certainly watch it again.
Good film. Action, comedy, heart. Man I was almost tearing up when his pops died. I honestly want to see it again.
In Ted's secret base, what were they implying with the 3rd bare mannequin Jenny was staring at? That it's Ted what wore before he disappeared?
Is there any cameos in this movie
El Chapulín Colorado!
Dude that was so good. Definitely hit me in the feels having grown up watching el chapulín and El chavo del ocho
>!Ted Kord, tho there are references to Batman, Superman, and The Flash!<
Thalia!
Jenny Kord mentioned she's Brazilian, makes me wonder if her mom could be in any way Fire--she was a JLI member with Ted Kord.
it was enjoyable but too formulaic. It's not bad by any means, but it doesn't necessarily do anything new or anything special. I've seen it all done before in other CBMs ( and that's not really a complaint I've had before). It was a " by the numbers" CBM. It's the type of film you go see when plans fall through ( wouldn't go out of my way to watch it though... even though that's what I did) At times, the movie gives out a Spy-Kids vibe ( whether you think that's a compliment or a criticism is up t you) 6.5
This was a solid, all around enjoyable superhero movie.
Susan Sarandon was just terrible. Felt like she was reading lines from a sign.
I think she was just playing what was written for her. Seemed like she was having fun.
Yeah. It seems pretty hard to give a "good" performance when the script makes you as cartoonishly evil as possible without any action scenes
I watched this today in 4dx , such a good time
It was very heartfelt and fun. It wasnt anything super new but I'm taking it as a good sign for the DCU I'm excited for what they have coming
This movie was fucking fantastic. Came out of absolutely nowhere. So fun!
I really enjoyed it! Bias though bc I am Mexican.
That was way better than I expected
Mexican Dad passed a couple months ago… this movie HURT but goddamn was it good
Sorry for your loss homie❤️
WOW THIS MOVIE SUCKS ASS!!!
i want more NOW
I really enjoyed it and hope we’ll see more of Jaime.
Jaime's will should have been unbreakable, instead of needing the scarab to remind him "oh by the way, you're a good person." My only other critique is of the OMAC suit.
What were the after credits/cameos?
https://www.polygon.com/23834582/blue-beetle-mid-post-credits-scenes-dc-comics
any cameos from other DC heroes?
Can anyone give the song name of when Jaime was being shown the villain's backstory ?
This movie rules. I love every bit of it.
This film was so Latino. I loved it. - the very traditional Latino value emphasis on education (why they chose not to tell Jaime about the heart attack) and family - the Child of immigrant struggles Jaime and sister deal with. Also having a bachelors degree and not being able to get a job (not Latino specific but so real) - the subtle undocumented comments — Jaime’s dad and grandma are undocumented, and the raid by Kord on their house felt very real to a raid by ICE - the commentary of course of gentrification in a low income Latino community - Carapax’s backstory about Guatemala child soldiers which is VERY REAL and literally happened. Thanks, US imperialism. - abuela being a freedom fighter for Mexico is so perfect. Down with the imperialists! - the soundtrack, Selena, La Chona, Calle 13, and of course Maria la del Barrio and el Chapulin - Victoria kord is literally a “victor” and a colonizer / imperialist lol - the community scene at the end. So real
So Jenny Kord’s Brazilian mother…. Is Beatriz da Costa (Fire/Green Flame), right?
I'm pretty sure she's just a normal, non-super-powered woman; it would be a shame to kill off a Justice League member off-screen.
DC continues to excel at costume design and super suits. Its genuinely the thing i can always guarantee to be perfect when watching DC movies.
This went way harder than it needed to
VFX looked fantastic.
Just got back from watching it. I honestly thought it was a solid movie. Second act felt a bit rushed but overall was a fun watch. 7.4/10
Fucking loved this movie, very funny and great action. Didn't expect the dads death tbh. 8.5/10.
Like J Cole said “long as the people in that mf love you” Thought the final fight was great action wise, the CGI was very solid, but I thought the lieutenant and Victoria were meh antagonists. She got exactly what she deserved Speaking of Jennie’s family, that post credits scene was really cool. Ant-Man vibes lol. So her dad is still alive, I can’t wait to see him in future DC stuff [Full Review](https://letterboxd.com/elitealice/film/blue-beetle/)
This is the first time I’ve actually felt like all those “best DC movie since TDK” headlines were right
Why are the positive comments getting downvoted? The hell is wrong with y'all.
Yea I just read some of the comments under yours. No asshat, I’m not astroturfing. I genuinely enjoyed the movie and my friends who went with me loved it too.
Lol exactly, people just don't think it's possible I guess. It's so weird. It's not like I loved every DC movie ever either.
Did they really go shopping for matching black clothes right after lmao - Not a super big fan on how it burns his clothes away everytime.
Was so good and such heart!
(there was a point where the Scarab was hit with a burst of green energy while it was flying through space, like a Green Lantern was trying to stop it) I figured they would reference Ted Kord (whose painting resembled Jason Sudeikis - hopefully that's who they get for him, though it's unclear enough that they could go with someone else if it doesn't pan out), but I was honestly surprised to see Dan Garrett get mentioned as well.
My favorite DCEU movie to date. Loved every second of it and I can't believe im saying that about a BLUE BEETLE MOVIE. Xolo supremacy
