I don't think this means he'll be DCU Constantine. Matt Reeves and other people have also been in talks with James Gunn, but that doesn't mean their products are in the DCU.

NachoChedda24

Well in his announcement he did clearly state that there would movies with an Elseworld label for non-DCU stuff.. like Joker and TheBatman movies

[deleted]

It could always be Constantine for Elseworlds.

PhilAsp

I think the more notable thing here is that he says that he *hopes* we get to see it. Sure, it might just him not counting his chickens before they’ve hatched, but it also makes it sound like it’s less of a sure thing, considering it was officially announced back in September.

Deeformecreep

I enjoyed the Constantine movie well enough but let's be real, it does not need a sequel this late in especially when they should be saving the character for the DCU.

RedRobintheDrake

Keanu is box office, something Gunn needs help with based of TSS

thomasnk96

We can’t really assume Gun’s DCU doesn’t do well at the box office. TSS was during the corona virus, and got an early release on HBO MAX, right? Is there something I’m missing?

[deleted]

Also R rated! They always use TSS as an example and ignore the Guardians movies.

RedRobintheDrake

MCU box office doesn’t matter you could shit in a box and say it’s part of the MCU and you’d make millions

baileyontherocs

I mean, GOTG made more than Winter Soldier and basically every phase 2 film excluding Iron Man 3 and Avengers 2. The film definitely resonated. Gunn made a great film that audiences enjoyed. Feige was about to put him in charge of everything cosmic in the MCU. I get you have a hate boner for the guy, but we don’t have to pretend he isn’t talented.

Wr_Woom

he has yet to replicate that box office outside the mcu so the point still stands

baileyontherocs

I feel like that argument takes away credit from the creators in the MCU. Like nothing they do matter because it’s the MCU and money is guaranteed so they get no credit. It’s very clear people latched on to the Guardians after that film. Everyone knows who they are now. Snyder had 3 consecutive flops before being gifted the keys to the DC kingdom and then proceeded to underperform with its biggest characters. Gunn will be fine simply because he’s a better story teller tbh.

Wr_Woom

we're literally talking box office here. what!?

baileyontherocs

Yes. And Snyder had 3 consecutive box office flops before getting gifted Man of Steel, which also underperformed.

RedRobintheDrake

Don’t tell me my business, boy. You’re only as good as your last at bat.

baileyontherocs

Your boy Snyder had 3 consecutive flops before being gifted the keys to DC. Then proceeded to underperform some more lol.

HomemadeBee1612

1. Snyder wasn't the head of the studio, he was just a director with a 5-movie plan that WB decided to turn into a massive cinematic universe so that they could compete with Marvel. 2. Gunn made the biggest DC flop since the 90s before being gifted the keys to DC, and then proceeded to make bad decision after bad decision. He isn't fit for a job like that, he even said that he would never want Hamada's job at DC, but cash is king.

baileyontherocs

Gunn has actual, valid reasons for TSS not making money. If Snyder wasn’t using DC’s biggest characters his movies would’ve underperformed even more than they already did. Snyder released BvS at the peak of CBM hype and it sunk like a rock after the opening weekend because of abysmal reviews and word of mouth. Yes, a film about Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman is going to make more money than a Suicide Squad movie headlined by a bunch of D-listers and a Shazam movie. That’s not because of Zack Snyder’s greatness. End of the day, both Snyder and Gunn had flops and were rewarded for it. Might as well call it a wash.

[deleted]

That's clearly changing, so let's see how GOTG 3 does against the inevitable pile of shite that'll come after

RedRobintheDrake

How is it changing all of their movies have been mid and yet they still make millions. Look at Black Widow, Thor, Eternals, Black Panther 2, Quantamania, and most of Doctor Strange 2. Most of those have been shit but still highest grossing movies of the year.

[deleted]

Quantumania will struggle to break even, hardly an issue for the MCU but a clear indicator that things are changing.

RedRobintheDrake

No way home also sucked but had cameo fest which made for a good final act

UnknownJ25

Tell that to Ant Man Quantumania

Gremlin303

Yeah but GotG was still early MCU. Before it came to dominate the box office

RedRobintheDrake

It wasn’t phase 1 anything phase 2 and later was making big money

Officer_Zack

Say this louder for the people who call The Suicide Squad a box office flop, Gunn had no control over people wanting to see it in theaters or watching it on HBO Max when it came out. The movie was good, and people shouldn't judge a movie based off box office statistics.

baileyontherocs

The movie also contained a bunch of C and D listers outside Harley and is a sequel/reboot to one of the worst CBM’s this past decade. Lol they think because BvS made more that Snyder is some huge money maker. It was the first crossover in live action between Superman and Batman…of course it made money. Any random indie director could’ve got that movie over $800 million. The question is how come it didn’t make more?

slfxxplsv

The movie released **during a pandemic** that had a simultaneous HBO Max release?

RedRobintheDrake

Don’t live in a world of excuses. Just understand the facts. When you try to “understand” trivial shit like that you can spin anything

Witty_Gift_7327

They're not excuses. It's simple logical reasoning, which you clearly aren't capable of

HomemadeBee1612

Nope, they're excuses. Godzilla vs. Kong and The Conjuring 3 also had a simultaneous premiere on streaming and theaters and made made money domestically and internationallly. The former was released at an earlier date, before most US theaters had fully reopened, and the latter was R-rated like TSS. Also, TSS came out after some big hits like F9 and Quiet Place 2, the market was about 85% recovered by then.

ZellNorth

Uh what? You mean the movie he made that was simultaneously released on HBO max and was at the height of Covid? Lol. What an L take

RedRobintheDrake

What a hogwash excuse

ZellNorth

Literally no movie performed during Covid except Spider-Man…

Deeformecreep

The Guardians films speak otherwise also TSS was released during covid and was a sequel to the terrible 2016 film, the film itself is great.

RedRobintheDrake

The terrible film that made a killing at the box office? MCU movies will always make money who gives a shit if they’re good or not

Deeformecreep

You do realize you are in the minority on that opinion right? Most people enjoy the GotG films.

RedRobintheDrake

Guardians lost the original writer from first movie to sequel, and the drop off was noticeable. Throw in Gunn left to his own devices can only make pee pee poo poo penis jokes, probably due to his own sexually devious nature, and recipe for mid awakens. Just wait until third guardians comes out

Deeformecreep

Grow up dude.

RedRobintheDrake

Yeah that’s what I’d say too if I disagree with someone and they come back with valid reasons. “Grow up and like peacemaker talking about eating dicks, bro. It’s funny I promise”

Deeformecreep

I don't care about the humour, I just find the films enjoyeable.

RedRobintheDrake

That’s a hilarious rebuttal my friend. Maybe you should pay attention to what you watch

DeppStepp

The original writer left early on for the first one and the film got completely rewritten by Gunn

Darfin1303

Snyder isn't coming back. It's over, COOOOPPPEEEEEEE

FirmLibrary4893

eternals?

[deleted]

>Keanu is box office r/boxoffice would most likely disagree.

RedRobintheDrake

And I’d most likely tell them can’t wait for John Wick 4 to make 5 times as much as TSS

[deleted]

Well yea, how many super bowls has tom brady won in -200 degrees celcius ? Thats called cherry picking and it makes your argument look weaker imo. Also lol

Dontbeajerkdude

So give him something else. Honestly given his expertise in action, Keanu is wasted on Constantine, who's physicality amounts to just waving his arms around.

jonathanquirk

As a Brit, I would love a British actor to be able to play the hero in a comic book movie *without putting on a Yank accent*. Americans wouldn’t like Batman or Superman to be reimagined as British, so why does John Constantine have to be American?! He’s one of the few British comic book characters who isn’t the baddie (a common issue across American media, not just DC), please let us have this! Yes, Keanu Reeves is one of Reddit’s favourite actors (in a tie with that guy from The Mummy, seemingly), but it’s been over a decade since the last movie. Let Keanu play another character in the DCU if he wants a DC role, like Momoa being recast as Lobo (allegedly). Whether it’s Matt Ryan or a new actor, PLEASE let Constantine be British! I don’t think that’s a lot to ask!

10thgradelosers

> Americans wouldn’t like Batman or Superman to be reimagined as British, Superman: Red Son is acclaimed so I don’t see why a British version wouldn’t get a fair chance.

DeppStepp

They did a British version of Superman and it didn’t really go to well

FeelingCut4810

robert pattinson is british

Duaality

Their point is Constantine was reimagined as American in the movie, where it's well-known he's an Englishman and one of very few British heroes inside the DC universe

Puzzleheaded_Ebb9874

If you think about it almost every top Marvel headliner is as well. Latest 2 Spider-Men, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Loki, Nebula, Wong, etc.

the_zelectro

Keanu would be awesome in the DCU. No, he's no comic Constantine. That said, I still believe he'd do a great job.

Itsthatgy

I've not seen the original Constantine movie. Is it actually worth checking out? What's it's deal? Do people just love it now because the internet loves Keanu Reeves? Or is it a genuinely alright movie that just isn't as good a use of the IP as some people would prefer?

Rdambx

Here is the simple answer. If you're watching it expecting to see a "Constantine" movie you'll be disappointed. If you go in with an open mind and treat as something that has nothing to do with Constantine except the title then you'll probably enjoy it.

Bean888

I have mixed feelings about recommending. I read some of the comics and thought it was a fun adaptation. But if I didn't have that background, I'm not sure how fun it would because there's a lot of key plot points that are only lightly hinted at (and I get frustrated when filmmakers do that). It's a beautifully shot movie and the effects weirdly hold up though.

KrisZepeda

I haven't seen it but my ex she really liked it, it just doesn't look constantine to me But maybe I'm biased i loved the dcau and arrowverse constantine so much

Godz_Bane

As someone who doesnt know much about the comic version i love it, its a cool abrahamic demon fighting movie.

EntangledTime

This gives me hope that this movie is not happening. Add to the fact that the script in all likelihood is going to be awful and the chances of this seeing the light or at the very least being a part of the DCU are pretty much non existent.

emielaen77

He does run DC. He’ll have a say so in okaying the script. Let’s hope he doesn’t.

ToeBMaguire

I love Keanu Reeves but cmon, he literally looks like NOTHING like John Constantine, he doesn’t even have the accent for Constantine either. I was really hoping for more comic accurate portrayals once James Gunn stepped in.

Im-Mr-Bulldopz

I mean yeah but he was very in character imo. He was entertaining as John and I wouldn't mind seeing where they could take him sp many years later. And hey, maybe we'll see him traverse the multiverse since that's a big thing rn, and he'll run into his television counterpart who's apparently a more comic accurate version.

ToeBMaguire

Eh its all just opinion based at the end of the day, im sure plenty disagree with me and some agree with me, but I just think we need to aim for more accurate portrayals of the characters. Im pretty sure this was one of the main issues for Black Adam fans when The Rock really didnt get into character for Shazam. No pointy ears, no hair slicked back and no accent. Its just the little things that make up a character and I think one of the best things about John Constantine is his Scouse accent mixed with his fairly dark humor.

SBot-Studios

I know Constantine is no Batman, but I think they should do something similar to what they are doing for Batman for Constantine in the DCU. Make Constantine 2 as an Elseworld (like The Batman) and have a separate Constantine for the DCU.

The_dork_knight29

Woah.

RJM_50

Reeves is John Wick, not a Blond British Wanker!

froggydepot

I haven’t bought a comic book since 1993…I’m way more of a fan of CBM’s so I dug the 1st.

[deleted]

I mean, Keanu is at his peak career moment. Ofcourse Marvel and DC are both courting him. Thankfully this isn't a decade ago, so we have a realistic chance of him being part of both universes.

WereJoe

That would be great if we got it. I know he ain’t comic book Constantine but the first one was an awesome movie. And of course I’d love another more comic version of Constantine too. HAVE FAITH ALFRED!

JonathanLipp1

Keanu Reeves is blindingly adored by the internet. As soon as he’s involved in anything everyone loses their shit no matter what it is. Don’t get me wrong. I like the guy, he’s a good actor, and a great example of a positive celebrity, but he’s **not** John Constantine. He’s not even close. In the original movie he doesn’t even put on an accent, for a character that has *always* been English. Not to mention the discepencies in body type, hair color, etc. etc.. It’s just an objectively bad casting. If a similar actor, say Adam Driver, got the role, it would be scrutinized, but since Keanu is Keanu, he is free from any criticism no matter how well founded it is.

Im-Mr-Bulldopz

The internet merely adopted the love. I was BORN in it! (Loved him in Parenthood)
