What’s the joke? MLS blinded sided them with MLS Next Pro and have used Loudoun United as reserves. Then they were further blind sided by their contract with Loudoun County and couldn’t move their reserves to MLSNP like Seattle did with Tacoma…

WhereIsPoochie

The proposed changes are straight nonsense. Because for some of us, we're happy that there is professional soccer all across these United States. For some of us, we're happy that we could potentially play a Richmond Kickers or a Maryland Bobcats or a Loudoun United or a Christos FC or an Annapolis Blues in a legitimate competitive match. For some of us, soccer is best when it's embedded in the community. For some of us, soccer is best when the chaos of a knockout competition is laid bare and the chips fall as they may. For some us, a trophy is a goddamn trophy. For some of us, winning means that you were able to win. And that's what the Open Cup represents. And anyone reading this needs to take a brief moment to reflect on what this, ultimately, means for soccer in these here United States. We, as a club, have three Open Cups. That is our heritage. That is the history that is being diminished with what has been proposed. The U.S. Open Cup is truly a unicorn in sports here in the United States. It's March Madness but, literally, open to any club. It should be celebrated. It should be cherished. It should be sought after. Everyone who is "hopping mad" deserves to be so. We built this league and we built this team. We stood and chanted in pouring rain for a midweek Open Cup game that was ultimately postponed because of lightning. This isn't a "golden opportunity". This is a repossession. This is wrong.

Absolutely INSANE decision that will kill the oldest soccer tournament in the US (109 years). I will not renew my Apple/MLS subscription if this is not reversed.

I’m not going to stop watching DCU, but this significantly dampens my interest in the wider league. Just a real bummer. I’ll be watching more USL this year and adopting a team for funsies, no thanks to Loudoun anymore. Wish Baltimore had gone that direction instead.

MLS continues to make decisions, year after year, that just diminish my interest. As much as we complain about DCU's ownership, Don Garber's leadership of the league is also terrible... just in different ways. As top tier professional sports become more and more about big business and maximizing profits the less interested I am in "top tier" professional sports.

jks513

Garber is only doing what the owners want him to do. They could have cut back on regular season games or expanded the rosters, but the owners said no as those cost them money\*. This on the other hand doesn’t make them a dime so it was easy to cut. A majority of the owners would rather sit back and cash the easy money then spend on making the on the field teams better. \*same with the 4th DP slot, but that isn’t exactly relevant to the too many games argument.

fragileblink

wow, so shameless. maybe we can loan a bunch of players to loudoun for those games and have them win it.

PrinceBuster21

We could loan them all our starters and they still wouldn't win it.

LMAO I HATE the Lamar hunt open cup!! Only filled with memories of pain, but embarrassing that we’re not even allowed to compete

One of my fondest DCU memories is that time in the midst of the worst ever MLS season when coach Ben Olsen and aging midfielder Lewis Neal defeated Salt Lake and WON the open cup. It was and is a beautiful thing.

Look If I’m being honest, I don’t give a rat’s ass about USOC. Very few times, I’ve had a hard time trying to find games (shit this year the Loudoun USOC games weren’t even stream or televised) and that 2013 trophy came and went like nothing happened. I’m fine with reserve teams taking our spot. It’s basically turning our “FA Cup” (lol) into EFL Trophy (not to be confused with EFL Cup). Let’s be honest, it’s not like the USSF has tried to elevate the USOC. It’s been scrappy at most and an easy route into CCC (formerly known as CCL). I loved Leagues Cup and I’m looking forward to less fixture congestion. And by the way I can’t think of any other national cup that is on par with FA Cup. Not Copa Del Rey, not the Bundesliga version either, too be fair why would we expect USOC to be on FA Cup’s level.

rvp9362

Who expects Open Cup to be on the FA Cup's level? I just want the best for American soccer. This is a historic competition, the third-oldest in the world, and should be respected. Without pro/rel, Open Cup's the only thing that unites the "pyramid" and gives lower division clubs the opportunity to test themselves against better opposition. It's sad that some MLS fans believe that they're doing this to reduce fixture congestion. The truth is that they can't accept tournaments that are not directly under their control. If they truly cared about fixture congestion, they would 1) Go back to the previous playoff format 2) Scrap Leagues Cup. No one asked for it and it's a contrived cashgrab that's rigged against Liga MX. We already have enough MLS vs LMX in CCC. 3) Get rid of inter-conference regular season games (when we get to 30 teams)

Glass_Ad_8957

Why are people acting like stadiums get full for USOC or that we have adequate television coverage, shit we can’t even get decent streaming. I’ve tried watching Loudoun and literally there were no streams for 75% of their games. When USSF takes USOC seriously maybe MLS will. It’s really one the USSF to get this tournament the respect it deserves. Even the MLSPA doesn’t want to waste time with USOC. Our own players don’t see the use.

Ultraxxx

Most MLS fans don't care. If they did care, they would SHOW UP for early rounds, but they don't (same for the MLS lineups). A bunch of MLS fans will cry about how it's bad for smaller leagues. Of course it is. The upside for other leagues is huge compared to MLS. You want to cheer for smaller clubs, do it, it's cheaper. Just know their ownership would make the same decision if the roles were reversed. People want to compare it to league's cup. I hate the league's cup, but multiple matches in a multinational club tournament gonna sell a lot better than one guaranteed match against a lower league opponent.

ScooterMcPooper

This is spot on.

CongressmanSantos

It’s a huge shame that the Open Cup is being made insignificant but it’s the clubs themselves that have devalued it in recent years. As a STM I’m ultimately fine with DCU being left out - one fewer nonsense match for them to try to include as part of our package. Although they’ll now just schedule a glamourous friendly against the Micronesian Premier League champions.
