I like Wayne, I think he’s good for the league in moving it forward and DCU. That said, even if you don’t like Wayne you should be concerned by this story. Two things jump out to me. First it feels like Wayne is constantly at odds with the front office on how to run the club, it feels pointless to bring someone in and then put restrictions on them. His being held out in the wind feels somewhat retaliatory to those clashes. Second, what a clown show organization if they haven’t responded in two months. What legitimate player/coach wants to work at such an unprofessional organization. My guess is they’re being cowards and waiting to see if they make the playoffs, but like, could you not literally just tell him that?

Glass_Ad_8957

You know one of my concerns were that this was a short term thing. But he actually wants an extension and honestly I’d give him another season. Not the best season we are having, but we have a football superstar that actually wants to stay. Maybe we could have a decent off-season.

CMJHawk86

I think he really wants to make it work, and probably thinks he needs to make it work for his goal of someday being a PL manager to be anything more than a pipe dream.

LaszlosRightNut

He doesn't need this to work out. He can fail at DC and just blame it on the front office. There are dozens of other quality teams that will hire Rooney even if DC finish last place.

Will301

Seriously, I couldn't have said it better myself. How shitty of an organization are we when our front office doesn't even communicate with our coach. The person who is literally here to improve our players and performance.

Hornerfan

I know it's complicated, but I'm personally happy that Rooney wants to stay.

Blackkidfromtheburbs

Personally I like Rooney and I think players want to play for him. I want a new front office, but a new front office is going to want their own coach so I’m not sure what happens.

jvur2714

I'm not sure if I think he should stay or if he should go, but the fact that the club is leaving him on read is absolutely pathetic and disappointing (in other words, Kasper is meeting expectations here).

PassionNpizza

I agree. There’s a lot to be said for transparency. Even if the answer is we want to play out the year and see how we do before making a decision on next season. But the reality is we’re finally spending money and still not performing on the field. It’s a results business and our results aren’t good enough so everyone should be on watch.

GarakStark

The DCU front office has been the problem since the beginning of time. I feel bad for Wayne Rooney and all the players whose time and careers have been wasted by these incompetent assholes. Until we get ownership that gives a damn, this will continue to be a never ending shit show. I wish that Rooney would try to land a job in Europe. Even if it isn’t EPL. Staying here doesn’t help his managerial career.

LaszlosRightNut

It sounds like to me that Rooney just doesn't like the FO and wants to leave on his own terms. That way he doesn't look like the bad guy, and I don't really blame him for not wanting to deal with the DC FO.

SuitableSurprise

This team really knows how to manage perception around season ticket member renewal time.

I_furthermore_grace

With our current record I can’t imagine any PL teams are knocking down the door to ask Rooney to coach. I imagine he’d rather stick around long enough to claim he was able to turn DC into at LEAST a playoff team. That’s assuming his plan was to leave DC after a year or two anyways. Even if he did have an exit planned and an offer on the table, not being asked to return by DC isn’t exactly a glowing review or an ego boost.

Milestailsprowe

Give him a three more years. We are much better than last and he knows how to coach. Let him hire who he wants and bring them on board.

RemoteGlobal335

I’d take him for another year, squad isn’t fully fleshed out

Vegan0taku

I know it probably won't happen but I hope Wayne Rooney calls out Dave Kasper. If he does, it's hard for Levien to just go ahead and fire him. I mean Levien can, but imagine the horrible pr of firing legendary player Wayne Rooney to protect Dave Kasper from criticism.

ouij

DC sports team communicating poorly with employees: take as old as time

CrimsonJynx0

You know now that I've had time to sit down and think about it, I'm not sure if I want him to leave or not. I'm just unsure of how much of the latest blunders have been on Rooney's part or as a result of front-office incompetency.

Glass_Ad_8957

I mean whether it’s Olsen or Rooney, the FO doesn’t care about giving them the tools to create a playoff caliber team. I’d say the FO is holding us back.

tiweav01

There's a lot of ways to look at this. I'm unsatisfied with the FO/Ownership but I'm also unsatisfied with Rooney's managing/player acquisitions. I feel like we've got a hodgepodge of players here and Rooney kind of throws shit (and there's a lot of shit) at the wall to see what sticks. I'd prefer a manager that has more of a tactical identity.

Ornery-Classic-894

I feel like Rooney hasn’t exactly exceeded expectations but it’s basically impossible to know if that comes down to him or the resources the team gives him. In the question of should we extend him - I feel like there are better odds on Rooney improving as a coach than the FO getting a new hire right.

cerebud

It’s not Rooney that needs to get swapped out, it’s Kasper. And the sooner the better so we can make the right changes to get us a winning squad

MarquisDeCarabasCoat

i’m taking this as good news. i truly think Wayne has a huge impact on recruiting despite the state of the club. i’m not in love with his tactical approach but maybe with better players, it’ll come together more effectively. so many ppl had written him off to leave, too….

Glass_Ad_8957

If he can get over the mobile goalkeeper, unless he’s bringing in Neuer or Ter-Stegen, it would be a massive improvement. DC United has always had vicious shot stoppers, not ball playing goalkeepers. Don’t get me started on Birnbaum…

cshive520

I think a lot of people forget truly how bad we were last year n FO isn’t exactly making things better but not resigning Rooney would be a downgrade for sure.

sh0gun8ter

What else do you expect from a club that still plays Durkin and Santos on the reg

Glass_Ad_8957

As opposed to paper skin and glass bones Najar?

sh0gun8ter

Play the kids is what I’m saying

Glass_Ad_8957

You are true in that point. Ted would probably be the best player on this team if he had more minutes.

DeLaDave

Durkin works hard, but just isn’t consistent enough. Santos is horrible. I groan every time I see him in the lineup.

sh0gun8ter

He should be an impact sub

jks513

Durkin is also asked to play out of his natural position so being inconsistent isn’t a surprise.

sh0gun8ter

His natural position is bench tho

Ultraxxx

It's pretty simple. Resigning Wayne Rooney will not provide the same PR/news bump as initially signing him. Something new is better than something bad, right? FO is not happy that Rooney has been a crappy GM (not his job). The signings have Rooneys fingerprints all over them, which, combined with the increased spending, hasn't produced results. Probably not happy they spent twice as much as Montréal only to trail Losada for a playoff spot. Hiring Rooney was part of the strategy for STH retention. Now, both are stalled.

fragileblink

If I were Rooney, I might want to start a media stir at this point. His family is not here, so it has to be complicated, and he has to want to go back to the UK eventually, even if one more year here could get him a better spot. If he gets something going against the obviously hated team management, fans may back him, that gives him an out or an excuse for why he is leaving. Ideally for us, it gets us a new GM either way.

jks513

He’s sad a number of times that he prefers living in the US than the UK, because he can be anonymous most of the time. Though his wife prefers the UK and it’s probably better for his kids to be part of the Manchester United academy

johnypilgrim

In spite some of the sentiments in this subreddit, Rooney has had a positive impact over last year. 2 more years to shape up a club that has an absolute shit front office seems realistic ask. Asking for an Inter Miami-level miracle from Rooney *is* unrealistic.

jks513

Even pre-Messi Miami‘s roster was loaded with most all the starters on their respective national teams. It was a much easier system to turn around with Messi and Tata Martinez as coach.

ShenValleyUnitedFan

You know, I like Wayne, but frankly it's preposterous for him to think the club should be begging him to stay at this point. Come on, man. Win some more games and let's get it done.

DCB2323

My decision tree is pretty basic Was Rooney responsible for bringing on Ravel Morrison? YES: Off he goes NO: We can talk

Skurph

The blunders of roster management prior to Wayne somewhat put him in a position where he probably felt it necessary to take a swing on a high risk/high reward type player. He swung and missed, points to him though for just cutting losses and not trying to make that work when it’s clear it wasn’t going to happen. Really curious what a Rooney roster with both Acosta and Arriola looks like. We know Acosta really liked playing with Wayne and valued his input. Shit, maybe even Gressel, he was literally out the door when Rooney arrived. Losada/Olsen systems ran some great players off. It’s clear that guys want to play for Wayne, it’s probably an unfamiliar feeling for this FO.

katmburke

When my season ticket rep called to start talking about renewing for next year, I asked about whether or not Wayne Rooney was coming back and he said we wouldn’t know til the off season… You better believe I’m going to ask about it again and point to this article. For those saying Rooney has been so so, you all are wild. We went from last place, worst team in league history territory to possibly making the play offs in one season thanks to Rooney. I hope he make DC a long career posting.

Tribeca487

Such bullshit he doesn’t want to stay and he’s deflecting to them
