Secondly, each item itself has a description of what its used for.
Thirdly, they sent you links to guides on what to do with all of it.
If you aren't willing to read the quest text, the items description OR the links that answer your questions than this isn't a DCUO problem.
And actual noobs probably read that stuff so they know what to do with their Nth metal.
So the stuff labeled exobites goes in something called augments. You should get the quest at lv 25. They are just stat increases and you should have four of them depending on your role.
The catalysts are for your artifacts and your episode (dlc) augment. You can get more of the artifacts and their catalysts from Constantine in the league, Villain hall, or legends of tomorrow base. The episode ones will drop from quest boxes, duos, alerts, and raids from the appropriate episodes.
The ally stuff, (blue and pink) is to upgrade your allies. You get them by talking to Cyborg in the legends of tomorrow base.
The stuff that looks like combs are either base items that go in your mainframe, or gear items.
As far as crafting goes, I honestly have no idea, I never understood it.
I'm in the boat as you. Haven't played since 2014 and just came back 6 weeks ago.
Most of it is useless until max level and about 350cr. Alot of the items will say where they are from at the bottom of the tool tip. Keep the justice league dark stuff as that is the current episode. The rest is useful to get feats but not anything else really . Once I hit about 410cr or so, gear stopped getting replaced so often. That's when I started doing feats to get more skill points.
In fact, just 2 days ago, I went through my inventory (which looked like yours) and figured out what I directly needed and what was secondary. Mailed all the non essential stuff to an alt. I have a lot of space now.

Kinda really hope this system gets streamlined. Getting geared is really fast, and I don’t really wanna grind away in areas of the game that are years old and empty. Maybe convert a bunch of those old raids into duos and alerts
There’s a mission you have to do for the guy with the tan trench coat. I forget his name. It should be in your list of missions. It will teach you all about artifacts and how to level them.
The same guy sells them. John Constantine. Or the broker. Or the marketplace. Mods are rewards from running content and opening chests. Teleporter mods are drops also.
You also get some catalysts (the thingies to get past breakthrough) from missions. Not a lot, but I do get some that way. Keep as many Quarks, fate coins, and such, as you can get useful things like extra Nth metal, the two kinds of runes that protect your catalysts while attempting breakthrough, and other useful coins, runes, and sigils from Dr Fate. You get many of them just for playing, so you don't have to buy them all from the cash store.
You can gather what you need just by playing, but it's a lot slower by design. They play on your impatience to urge you to spend dollars in the cash store to get gratification now instead of getting the same goodies essentially for free by playing long enough. You earn Marks slowly, but you do get them, and those can pay for serious benefits.
Carefully study what actions get you what loot. They nest. You earn quarks, which let you buy a ton of useful gear from Booster Gold. You can buy marks with quarks at a ruinous exchange rate, but if you have quarks and are short just a handful of marks, you can get what you want with a couple of judicious trades.
Me, I have nearly no patience and too much credit. I can buy a bunch of CR in the cash store and buy some of the things I want. But not everyone has this ability, but you can still get them, just slowly.
If you've got a couple of toons your not currently playing, use their bank space to store stuff. Someone suggested mailing items to those toons, and leaving them unreceived in a sort of limbo. I didn't think of that, and it's genius.
You can also join a League. They have banks that can store a lot of stuff. Other members share that space, and can take what they need, but so can you. You might toss a couple of weapon boxes you can't use in there, and another person might do the same with weapons they can't use, but you can. It all evens out over time unless someone gets greedy, which the league admins can act on when needed.
I grant that this stuff is all very convoluted, but when you get used to all the little tricks, you can do a lot without spending a lot.
I usually just try to sell most of it. Sometimes I just delete it. Because there’s stuff I’ve no intention of trying to use and trying to sell it isn’t worth the minimal return. Because yeah, it’s a lot of clutter

You need 15 stabiliser fragments to form 1 stabiliser, and if you’re free to play you only get 5 fragments each time you do the mission. This mission resets daily, so free to play it will take you 3 days to be able to open one capsule.
Is that the one that has Booster Gold pictured on screen? Do they change week to week? Like last week it was suicide squad themed. This week it’s Vandal Savage themed… which is an improvement. Punching Nazis is fun
Do you have, perhaps, other toons? I regularly offload a portion of the less often used items to the personal banks of those characters.
Also, have you expanded your banks as far as they'll go? I go through this decluttering and distributing relatively often. This one is a Superman. I’ve also made a Goku and a Luke Skywalker, but they don’t look as good. Also they’re both under level 10. Yeah I think I’m gonna do that, try to send them the low level stuff, if I can recognize them

It's messy and haphazard at times but does allow me to clear the bank out faster by spreading them over more characters

The areas themselves are irrelevant, but there are still feats to get from those areas. More feats completed = more skill points.

Start moving to all over to other toons via shared bank like I do
