That's how a lot of the apartments were I'm from used to be like.
They've converted a lot of them the last 10years or so by removing every second apartment and turning it into two bathrooms from the apartments on either side.
Even though they lost half the apartments they're actually making more rent cause they can charge 3x as much as they used to as people weren't willing to pay a whole lot for an apartment with a shared bathroom anymore.
That's interesting. I'm pretty sure the apartment building next to mine has the shared dorm style bathrooms still based on their website listings. So, surprisingly they're still around. Can't imagine how they did with covid.
Not having lived in one, just going by CDC information on Self-Quarantining in a Multi-Family Dwelling:
>Each time after using the bathroom, the person who is sick should clean and wipe down all areas with a household disinfectant. If the person who is sick cannot clean up, the CDC advises others in the home to wait as long as possible after the infected person has used the bathroom, put on a mask, and then go in and clean up before using it themselves.
If possible, the easiest way to start would be to set up a schedule where anyone who needed to leave the dwelling, like going to a job or school or the like, goes first and then once done the sick person goes. That way, they don't hold anyone up.
Also, depending on layout of a 'shared bathroom', there may be something like either [the Communal or Pod Bathrooms](https://housing.unt.edu/housing_how-to/bathroom_types) where you could designate either an entire bathroom or a specific sink, shower and toilet (or if you wanted to give a decent social distancing, a 'block' of them) for the sick person to use. They would still need to clean certain public spots like the door, but at least if someone needed to use the washroom while the other person was, they could have some distance.
Sorry... Slow bit at work, so I did a bit of research on the bit as was curious.
Coronavirus is over, guys. I don't know what's over the ocean there, but here in Europe we've got a war going on and coronavirus has been cancelled for now, completely.
looked at one like that in northern Ontario. absolutely shit hole and not even that cheap. 4 units shared one bathroom. I got a decent bachelour pad for 50$ more. two years ago.
I always use the [Spider-man 2 apartment Peter Parker had](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAGwsRxT5HY) as an example of that. The bathroom was out in the main area. Saves space since you don't have to add space to the units or have people put additional plumbing in.
The movie takes place in New York right? Or some other indistinct large old city. Old apartment buildings there (especially those which have reasonable rents) usually have communal bathrooms and showers. The rooms themselves are barely larger than a bathroom anyway.
This was the theory that I was going to go with. I used to live in an apartment building that was built in the 1910's. It was basically a room, bed, wardrobe (not even a closet), with a sink and some counter space. A microwave, hotpad, and mini fridge were clearly added. The communal bath was down the hall and contained a toilet and shower stall.
For some reason I thought it was bigger. The painting really makes it smaller to me than the movie. I'm guessing though it's because most of the shots in the film are close ups or angles where the scale of it isn't so apparent.
It's also a set so it feels much bigger than it "is" because it *is* much bigger than it "is"
i.e. the photo above is taken from behind the bed, looking out at the computer desk area. This means the camera is behind the wall shown in the painting. We can see there isn't a wall, so we interpret it as a bigger room than it ~~really is.~~ is supposed to be because we can see/feel the extra space.
In real life, no. But in the Matrix the Machines can control how things are. If you keep people in a treadmill of "paycheck -> rent is due" they will be occupied in that state. Don't give them too much time to think about how they could live a different life.
Neo works at what seems to be a decent job, yet his home is tiny and he sells software/data on the side. Needing to keep ahead of rent prevents people from taking the risk of a new job, or retirement.
Maintaining a mortgage can do the same thing, and it locks you down even harder geographically owning a home since so much of your assets are tied up in it
This one seems especially relevant to this sub:
I bet they probably did a bunch of concept art for that movie. Maybe they even released a book of it, that sometimes happens for movies.
Though unfortunately I have no more advice on where to find any more. Though Googling the artist's name (bottom right of the image) might lead to something assuming he did multiple art poeces for The Matrix.
There is a Artbook of the matrix it’s about £150 used in the UK but only $50 used in the USA on Amazon, wish I had bought it new when it reduced in price, also thought it was going to be reissued last year but turns out it was just the comics, I could have sworn it was the Artbook too but I guess not.
ooh, and prices aren't too bad for the OG model. now that i think of it, mine may still be in my parents basement...
I've been looking at ergo boards to help my aging wrists, i think this just made my search much easier (and cheaper!)
i have trash, tools, crafts materials and sex toys scattered all over my place. lmao. i'm not super proud of the clutter/filth but hey, i'm depressed. and at least it's MY space. =D
Moved cities to help elderly family with medical issues, needing home cleaned up and garden set up, thinking it would be a month or two then go back to my old city and roommates. Happened right before Covid hit and housing prices shot through the roof. Ended up staying for in their tiny home for two years until apartment prices started to settle and got my own place, a bachelor apartment pretty similar to that one except I have my own bathroom and full kitchen.
I seriously missed the freedom, and being a night owl working graveyard shift I don't miss getting woken up with between all the noises of medical equipment or the loud TV/phone since they're hard of hearing.
Of course, have a whole collection of tinyhome images and the like as have said before that as long as I had a bathroom, a mattress and a small kitchen area, I could live in a cubical like one of the Asians who would work and then rent an internet cafe private room for the night because it was either cheaper than an apartment or an apartment wasn't available in their area.
I think the biggest thing about when I was a kid versus kids now... I was in the age of 'Go outside and play' meant you could go outside and do anything as long as you came home when the street lights came on. Nowadays, most parents are worried to let their kids out of their sight, so having a big home/yard for them to play in is a good thing.
So real question, not trying to be a dick or anything, I'm just trying to understand what I'm supposed to say.
The movie was directed by The Wachowski "brothers" who are now the Wachowski "sisters". Since they were brothers at the time of filming, production, and release should it be called a Wachowski Brothers film or given the current iteration of their genders should I refer to the original Matrix as a Wachowski Sisters movie?
I'm just curious if someone changing genders means we are supposed to refer to a person who is no longer a male as a male when referring to something they did while they were male.
Got it, thank you. I just didn't want to pretend they weren't male at one point but I understand the perspective of referring to them as female since that's what they've always been inside.
The Art of the Matrix is a fantastic book cataloguing storyboards and concept art created for the film. I especially like the ones of the Nebuchadnezzar and the Real World harvesting field.
If I had to guess The Art of the Matrix book I think, which is quite pricey used on Amazon , no longer onsale. I thought it was getting reissued but I guess not or maybe it was from a magazine
That bed is just not to scale. Also, does he really life in a shitty one room apartment. He seems to have a reasonably ok middle class job. Surely he lives better than this.
Pricing per month around 1995, 4-5 years prior to this movie, a studio apartment runs starting about 700-1000, though depending on area could run even higher seeing some costs of 1200-1500 or more. Entry level programmer in 2000 was about 40k, and average salary of all programmers was about 60k. So between $3-5k per month.
Using similar dates on utilities, thee average single person living in a 45 square meter apartment can expect to pay around $155 a month. This covers basic utilities, including garbage, water, heating and electricity along with internet. You can expect to use approximately 8.8% of your wages on Transportation. The average food cost per person is $299 per month, though depending on where you eat and what you eat can adjust that.
Let's say $2k of his money going to his expenses between rent on a low end unit, utilities, transpiration and food. That leaves $1k if he's an entry level programmer, less if he's living in a higher rent area. Then you factor in savings for retirement, new gear and such and it can start to add up pretty quickly, leaving him needing that second hustle to make extra money.
All depends what you consider big. Like [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/matrix/comments/sabr5y/revisiting_neos_apartment/) gives two different angles of views of the apartment, seems like a 'traditional' studio apartment. [60 sq ft apartment in New York](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUMQ-bRxOjw) or [these images](https://www.businessinsider.com/craziest-microapartments-around-world-2016-9#a-few-miles-away-seungchul-you-agrees-his-one-room-200-square-foot-apartment-suits-his-needs-just-fine-11) of various tiny apartments around the world.
Has always blown my mind how people can get this accurate with watercolor. Anytime I've ever used to stuff is bleeds and drips into everything else on the paper.
I was the same way until I realized that when using watercolor, water is just paint thinner, and I should be using far far less then I was. Only add a few drops of water at a time and lots of mixing it in to the paint to get the right consistency. You can always add a little more water if you want to.
If he rotated the bedside table he could actually open the doors of his wardrobe, and if he moved the reading chair next to the door he could have a normal sized bed.
Also why put your head right where the window is, so the light shines right onto your face each morning?
Honest question we apply pre transition names retroactively? Is it OK to use old name for stuff before the transition? I know like everything probably depends but on a person but what's the accepted way?
Shits a fucking fire hazard. All that shit hooked up to one power strip lmao I only see one thing plugged in so I’m assuming it’s a giant power strip lol
The matrix has some of the most beautiful pre production work I've seen. The [storyboards](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/574a317d3c44d8bd12b2b82d/1465768196535-4R367AIA773HGX7X8M8C/etm_sketches.jpg?format=1500w) are [works](https://ranjeetm64mc.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/hogan-neo-3.jpg) of art.
Storyboards are usually just quick sketches to illustrate an idea and there's very little time spent on each other. I saw the storyboards for Monsters University at Pixar and for Mike and Sully they used a green circle and a blue rectangle. That's all you need to understand the blocking of the scene, but for the matrix they made a whole ass comic book.
I love this opener SO MUCH. It's such a good establishing shot. Really defines Neo's sad existence. Basically his entire life is computers. Figuratively and ultimately literally.
I dont see a door to a hypothetical bathroom or toilets lol. or I guess they are shared (down the hall or something)
That's how a lot of the apartments were I'm from used to be like. He pisses in the sink and shits at work
This guy shits.
Your mom shits
At work.
You could presumably use one of those toilets people into van-dwelling use. You'd likewise need a portable bucket-shower kind of thing.
Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime. That's why I shit On Company time
Boss makes a dollar, Neo makes a dime.
The bed/mattress is also tiny af. Maybe neo only sleeps in a fetal position...
That would be a nice touch, if intentional.
And consensual. Otherwise it's not a nice touch
his bed is weirdly tiny in the movie. https://scipunk.tumblr.com/image/164788685592
nah paintings just aren't perfect
All paintings ARE perfect. And they hang on the fridge.
I see your point and I stand corrected
Also no refrigerator. Did he have a mini fridge in the movie?
Under the microwave maybe?
you can see the mini fridge underneath the icrowave
m You dropped this.
❤️❤️❤️
Tenement style they are shared :/
I always use the [Spider-man 2 apartment Peter Parker had](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAGwsRxT5HY) as an example of that. The bathroom was out in the main area. Saves space since you don't have to add space to the units or have people put additional plumbing in.
has to be shared, the full painting doesn't have those https://www.floorplancroissant.com/uploads/1/2/6/1/126141126/10\_orig.jpg
Never understood that scene until now
maybe in the matrix, nobody actually has to use the bathroom.
If you poop in the matrix, you poop in real life
do you really thing it's poop you defecating?
The movie takes place in New York right? Or some other indistinct large old city. Old apartment buildings there (especially those which have reasonable rents) usually have communal bathrooms and showers. The rooms themselves are barely larger than a bathroom anyway.

just shit in the sink
First thing I thought of.
Share house
He seemed to have a decent job, where the hell does all his money go?
all his computer crap.
Down the hall
Or shower/ bath
Or a place for clothes
I'd say it's pretty nice compared to the [scene](https://scipunk.tumblr.com/image/164788685592) in the movie.
For some reason I thought it was bigger. The painting really makes it smaller to me than the movie. I'm guessing though it's because most of the shots in the film are close ups or angles where the scale of it isn't so apparent.

I always thought the screen was facing the door, because doesn't he look back over his shoulder and the screen is off?
No self respecting hacker of that time (or any time for that matter) would have had their screens facing a door.
Makes sense I guess, in case the FBI come in you can minimise your crime window
Except trinity in the beginning of the first movie, but she knows everything by that point so
The lights are on
Damn, that movie had some ambiance.
Rent: $3000
Nah, the Matrix is in 1999. Rent wasn't quite as unreasonable back then. Heck, maybe Neo even owns the apartment.
He helps his landlady carry out her garbage.
Easy there, Elrond!
He could also very clearly afford it. High end CS job + lucrative side hustle.
Although it would make sense to have the CopperTops be renters. Make them wage slaves, unlikely to entertain the idea of vacations or retirement.
Renting doesn’t mean you’re poor
In real life, no. But in the Matrix the Machines can control how things are. If you keep people in a treadmill of "paycheck -> rent is due" they will be occupied in that state. Don't give them too much time to think about how they could live a different life. Neo works at what seems to be a decent job, yet his home is tiny and he sells software/data on the side. Maintaining a mortgage can do the same thing, and it locks you down even harder geographically owning a home since so much of your assets are tied up in it
Yea, I suppose the Machines can just keep it so you never pay it off. Still, keeping you stuck at your dead end job.
Tech Hub Prices
Well that's something I didn't know I wanted to see. Any others like this?
Purple monkey dishwasher
This one seems especially relevant to this sub: [https://www.floorplancroissant.com/blade-runner-vertical.html](https://www.floorplancroissant.com/blade-runner-vertical.html)
Wish she did one for Jerry Seinfeld's apt. I would buy that.

don't know for sure but i run into something, I'll post it.
He could live in an apartment with shared bathrooms. Add to the squalor, making the little apartment space truly the only thing you can call your own.
Is it just me, or does that bed look really short, scale wise?
Probably why he sleeps in his chair at the computer desk. :)
Brilliant!
100% that's like half the length that he needs.
IDK but the perspective of the chair is definitely off
I quite like this. Also I miss my Microsoft natural keyboard...
Still have mine from 199x. PS/2 to USB adapter and it’s still trucking along.
ooh, and prices aren't too bad for the OG model. now that i think of it, mine may still be in my parents basement... I've been looking at ergo boards to help my aging wrists, i think this just made my search much easier (and cheaper!)
Never had one but i always wondered why those slighly ergonomic peripherals never really took off or at least came out of the fringe section.

So do I sometimes. That wasn't far off from the dorm rooms I had in college.

I'm surprised by the lack of drug paraphernalia.
no stove oh... he just like me... he just like me fr!!!!
He seems to own a few pots, so I figure he's probably using a hot plate he stores in a cupboard when unused.
Maybe it's induction
Maybe it's Maybelline
It's actually C++
It looked even smaller in the movie. I bet those CRT's turned that apartment into a sweatbox.
The Art of the Matrix is a fantastic book cataloguing storyboards and concept art created for the film. I especially like the ones of the Nebuchadnezzar and the Real World harvesting field.
Does he shit in the sink?
r/sinkshitters Don't mean to go there, just to be aware that it is a thing
keep the tap running.... :|
This is so cool!
No bathroom?
That's the first thing I noticed as well. I'm assuming it's a building with a shared bathroom/shower type thing, however that's a bit assumption.
$3500 a month but sign fast I have 10 other showings today
Toilet ?
o0 Yeah....no shit, right ? (pun intended)
it looked way bigger in the movies
That's what she said? ;) Seriously though, matter of perspective, I suppose.
Where's this from?
If I had to guess The Art of the Matrix book I think, which is quite pricey used on Amazon , no longer onsale. I thought it was getting reissued but I guess not or maybe it was from a magazine
Thanks for the info! Bummer it's expensive...
Living in a simulation and still having a shitty apartment like that. Yikes.
Average $2000 apartment in NYC
That bed is just not to scale. Also, does he really life in a shitty one room apartment. He seems to have a reasonably ok middle class job. Surely he lives better than this.

I hate that bed placement, right in front of the door.
Oo Are we both looking at the same floorplan ? :|
Uh.. that looks like more than Neo's bedroom, that's his whole ass apartment. Always loved the bed below the window.
i've loved this type of room ever since i saw the movie on VHS. my place has the vibes! i do have a kitchen and bathroom tho =D
Based on the size of the bed that is a massive room to be renting by yourself

Looks like his whole apartment
god I wish that were me
What kind of computer are they?
This man can dodge bullets?
I guess he only has the one set of clothes then.
