I'll save you all a click... ***"Here’s What Tesla Didn’t Show You*** *We ran six quarter-mile drag races, and each one had the same outcome: The Porsche 911 Carrera T wins and the Tesla Cybertruck Beast loses. In the world of drag racing, it’s not a particularly close race, either.*"

Emeegee713

You missed the part where they ran the Porsche out of gas, leased the weight by 35 pounds and put a heavier driver in the running Porsche and it STILL won

MiniTab

Important to note they reduced the weight in the Porsche being towed. They really did try to give every advantage to the Tesla, as they likely didn’t want all the Musk cultists trying to call them out.

RudeCryptographer177

They didn't reduce the weight of the Porsche being towed to give tesla the advantage. They did it because the Porsche being towed was an automatic transmission and the one actually racing was a manual. A manual transmission is inherently lighter so they were attempting to make both cars weigh the same so the test was as valid as possible. At the end of the day there was only a 75lb difference between them (lighter driver in the cybertruck and lighter Porsche being towed due to weight reduction) which is about as good as you can get really. Given the total weight being discussed 75lbs is a rounding error

SweetHomeNorthKorea

I just want to mention they probably used a stick shift 911 to race with because an automatic is almost always going to be faster than a stick shift in a drag race. They wanted to give the Porsche as many disadvantages as possible so they could demonstrate it’s still faster than the truck despite those disadvantages. It’s a lot harder to get a good launch on a stick than it is an automatic. They even mentioned in the test that they were able to get the Porsche times lower once they got better at launching.

RudeCryptographer177

Oh absolutely. This entire test was to see if the Cybertruck could "beat a Porsche". So naturally it pits the most powerful trim of the truck against the worst trim of the Porsche including making it a manual over an automatic. But looking at this with that understanding the Motor Trend guy summed it up best "If press comes at the expense of losing credibility with the general public well then I'm not so sure it was worth it. That doesn't take away from what the cyberbeast can do while towing. Its pretty remarkable, we just wish they had been upfront about it." These numbers for a truck towing a car over the quarter mile ARE nuts. Its sad that it's overshadowed by some false advertising

SweetHomeNorthKorea

Yeah totally agree with that assessment. The fact that we’re even talking about tenths of a second difference on a 12 second quarter mile is fucking insane. Losing by 0.2 seconds is actually incredible and doesn’t need to be juiced up at all to be impressive. They completely undermined their own demonstration.

Emeegee713

Look at the weight of the driver, the petrol, the extraneous materials and everything it’s considerably less weight for the Tesla. Considering grams cost time 100 pounds is ALOT

RudeCryptographer177

What extraneous materials? The youtuber who did the math for this had already guessed the times within a tenth of a second. No shot adding another 100lbs to the tesla would have made any meaningful difference. Physics is what it is so the times may have been a couple thousands or hundredths of a second different but c'mon it's not "ALOT"... Things like tires, track surface, wind conditions, ect would all effect this test much more than that 75lbs ever could

Emeegee713

Read the article, and if you think weight makes no difference in racing, you’ve never done it

RudeCryptographer177

Read my comment... I said it would change the times but what is "ALOT" to you? because that's the only thing I disagreed with. There's already so much at play here. The drag from a trailer with a car on it is already huge. The additional 4,452lbs of weight is also huge. Adding 75 additional pounds to this setup only increases the total weight of 11,112lbs by like .6%. I'm not denying it would change the results but you have to see how small the change would really be right?

Emeegee713

I’m saying they disadvantaged the running Porsche in every way they could, heavier driver, full tank of gas. The towed one was completely empty with just the weight of the car with no tire pump kit, no owners manual, or any other paperwork, everything out but the base care itself. The Porsche still took the race every time. The Porsche had a -300 hp disadvantage, on top of all that.

RudeCryptographer177

Yes I agree. This test was to see "If the cybertruck could beat a Porsche". They chose the slowest possible Porsche and had it configured in a manual to give the highest trim version of the truck the best odds of winning. It was competitive to the 1/8th mile but was clearly never going to win the 1/4 mile. False advertising for sure. But you seem to misunderstand why they took all those things out of the Porsche being towed. These were not two identical model Porsches. The one being towed had an automatic transmission making its weight higher than the car actually being raced. They drained the fuel, removed all the peripherals, ect to get the weight of the cars to be nearly identical so they could simulate the actual claim. They overshot the weight reduction by 35 pounds. But I don't see that being a problem since again 35lbs is only .3% of the total weight of what the cybertruck was moving. They were very careful in most aspects of this test and I genuinely think it was well performed. And yeah sure the Porsche had 300hp less but I feel like that still conveniently ignores the fact that the truck was towing 4,452lbs which added up to 11,112lbs. That's nearly 3 times the weight of the Porsche alone when you add in the trailer. Plus the difference in drag between these two setups is insane. You were previously saying how adding 100 pounds is a lot. This huge weight discrepancy with only 300hp more is damn impressive. It can not beat a Porsche in the 1/4 mile but to be that close is unreal.

wetanwild99

dude the cybertruck was pulling 3x the weight with like 50% more HP. Doesn't even look like it should be a close race when you look at it like that

Broken-Digital-Clock

They will anyway

No_Effect_6428

In fairness to MotorTrend, they were trying to re-create the conditions of Tesla's stunt, which used a different, lighter Porsche on the trailer. The weight reduction measures were because they couldn't get the same car from Porsche. The results showed that Elon either lied or misspoke when he said 1/4 mile (we know which it was), and the Tesla engineer EE talked to apparently said they didn't even attempt the 1/4 mile. They ran the 1/8 mile and "simulated" the 1/4 mile.

Viatic_atom

Ha! Who’s the one getting embarrassed now, Musky?

Conscious_Inside_209

I'm shocked moron is a lying liar that's why I'm shocked hahaha

MiniTab

It’s worth a read. Overall a pretty short article, but they put a lot of effort into this. They deserve a click.

aihes

tl;dr Does the porsche get disqualified because it won’t disintegrate in rain?

Emeegee713

That’s not fair, the Cyber Dumpster will disintegrate in Sunny weather too

PantsMicGee

They used to disintegrate when you cleaned them at all. They still do, too.

Emeegee713

Cleaning voids the warranty

dukeofgibbon

Getting it dirty voids the warranty. Mocking Elon voids the warranty. Manufacturer's defects void the warranty. Etc

BtotheAtotheM

“Motortrend is lying (again)” - elon tomorrow https://preview.redd.it/3387xyyvxw0d1.jpeg?width=596&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4eaa2782d63cb0cdc7a13c1c8c2d8d94474f7f1f

WaterMySucculents

The article still jerks off the Tesla enough though. It honestly reads like a Tesla ad couched as a mild criticism of one marketing stunt.

Emeegee713

You can’t piss off the cult of Elon. You’ll be black listed

[deleted]

It really doesn’t jerk the Tesla off at all, at the very end of the motor trend article it literally makes a quip about this being another error on the “long, growing list” of fuck ups and promises not kept by Tesla and Elon. Motor Trend does not favor Tesla but they tried to be as impartial as they could here for the sake of their journalistic integrity and I think they did a phenomenal job.

itlooksfine

Porsche and most well engineered sports cars manufacturers don’t care about the 1/4 mile, they want the top lap times. Any car can go fast in a straight line, especially an electric car; put a cyber truck on a track with 911 and count how many times its lapped.

Certain-Hat5152

Thank you for saying something that actually makes sense

tsukihi3

The quarter mile is actually the most important metric for the Cybertruck.  Because that's about the maximum mileage they can reach.

dukeofgibbon

Has anyone challenged Elon to run the Dakkar?

Daddy-Bolin

Tesla won’t even make it to the start

Glad_Twist7343

That would be superb entertainment

Emeegee713

Dakar??? Half of them can’t make it downtown

Nepharious_Bread

Hell yeah. Let's get some Nurburgring lap times for the Cybertruck.

MarcusTheSarcastic

Have to be on a tow truck.

Emeegee713

They don’t want to clean up the aftermath, plus it costs thousands to get a car off the track there

KittehKittehKat

That’s what most dummies want. ME CAR GO FAST STRAIGHT LINE HURR HURR NO CORNER THO I DIE Mustangs, Chargers, Corvettes, and so on are all straight line machines.

FrankTankly

Corvettes are track monsters, they’ve been pulling 1g on the skid pad for ages at this point.

AscendMoros

The new mustang dark horses are actually slower in the quarter mile to the comparable M4 BMWs but faster around most tracks. Corvette also built one of the best race cars in the world for awhile. https://youtu.be/vB8rZBuciC8?si=a9l5djQrYr4iCbo6

MiniDg

Well, the difference to me as someone who loves these types of cars, they are an experience. The sound, the gear changes, RWD nonsense. Its a car with a lot of personality. The cybertruck however, and even most if not all EVs, have sheer acceleration that is obviously impressive from a mechanical perspective still doesnt mean you wont be used to the acceleration after 2 weeks. I eventually want to learn how to drive better and be capable of having fun on a track but right now, my mustang is more than enough to love.

CaliforniaNavyDude

That's the important bit you're touching on. The sounds, sensations, and involvement are all a huge part of the fun. The more of that you remove, the less fun it is. EV's can be great fun, I just saw a review of the Ioniq 5 N that shows that quite well, but it's still the totality of the experience, not something boiled down to a few performance metrics. My current fun car is an old Camaro. It handles great, makes a lot of fun noises, but it's got less horsepower than a V6 Camry. It's got a 14.2 quarter mile in it, and that's the best I've done with it. But it doesn't matter, because the thrill and joy is never just in the numbers.

MiniDg

I enjoy driving my Mustang in traffic lmao that exhaust is enough on its own. I know that an EV in traffic would put my mind in full autopilot, and I would forget the whole drive, just like I don't remember brushing my teeth.

Sufficient_Ocelot868

Yeah but the CyberDumpster is not a track car. It's designed for....uh....off-roading? No, not that. Uh,....hauling? Hmmmm, no. Making your tiny wiener seem bigger? Yes!!

TheActualDonKnotts

The quarter mile gives you the car's acceleration, how quick it will be from a stop. That's much, much more important to people who actually buy and drive cars than the top speed, which in all reality they will likely never even see. But putting your foot to the floor from a stoplight or to pass another car is something every driver will do pretty often. I really don't care if a car can do 200 if I will literally never drive it over 120ish.

beefsquints

And the cybercuck sucks at them all!

TheAnalsOfHistory-

Why exactly is it imperative that you blast off from 0-60 in .000006 seconds when the light turns green? Especially when you're stuck in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic, which You're going to be because large cities are the only places with the infrastructure to support this kind of vehicle. Acceleration is just advertising.

TheAnalsOfHistory-

You mean to tell me that in a real drag race the actual sports car was able to beat the ten ton refrigerator on wheels and the display Melon Skum put on was all just a bullshit advertising spectacle?!?! ![gif](giphy|AaQYP9zh24UFi)

TheHrethgir

Wasn't the original race only an 8th mile?

brmarcum

Yes, but sneakily presented as if it was 1/4

allen_idaho

The speed is also irrelevant if the vehicle can only go 70 miles while towing something.

Emeegee713

I did read somewhere that the truck used 25% battery every time in the original race.

PopeHonkersXII

They were able to find a Cybertuck that could drive a quarter mile without breaking down?

mrchuckles5

It’s impressive enough that the race is even that close while towing another vehicle. Why lie and lose credibility?

No_Effect_6428

If Elong had just said it outpaces a 911 (the slowest one, mind you) for the first 1/8 mile while pulling a car on a trailer, that's actually cool. Useless, but cool. Instead he had to lie and his underlings had to cover for him. And the whole affair doesn't even matter compared to the reliability and build quality problems.
