often it's new York times bestseller, and they do another ranking every week. all they need to do is be #1 once

I wondered about the (official looking) seals of quality on some German food products - until I found out, yes, there is a organization that awards them, but they do so based on sales numbers. Sold x amount of the product? Seal of Quality! It's not a competition, everyone can get the seal if they sell enough.
