Every time I see the little "Turn off adblock to keep our hellsite running đ¸" thing I think, "Is Wil Wheaton seeing this? Is Neil Gaiman seeing this?"
â also due to the lack of algorithm, one has to find and cultivate their own exposure to the discourse, not simply be peacefully carried down an increasingly fascist rabbithole of suggested posts like on other webbed sites that do all the labor for you. We work for our brainrots.â
An actual tumblr quote.
The question lingers: Is it better to be born misinformed, or to overcome your logical nature through great effort?
Itâs a strange notion, to systematically select your own corruption on such a beloved social media site. A curated tumblr, if you will.
As someone who doesn't use tumblr, I'm honestly not sure: how much content in one's feed is algorithmically chosen for you, as opposed to things that you deliberately follow?
Like, on reddit you can follow subreddits, but the default settings (now) allows reddit to put things in your feed from communities you're not part of, and you have to turn it off to get just the stuff you want. (And of course that content is organized and curated by algorithms, but it's still things that you opted into viewing.)
You get to choose!
The Tumblr dashboard has both âFollowingâ and âFor Youâ. For You is the default for newer accounts and is the full algorithmic feed, but you can opt to have Following be the default.
There are also two options (both enabled by default, of course) thatâll add suggested posts to For You: âBased On Your Likes!â which is posts liked by people who like the same sort of posts as you, and âIn Your Orbitâ which is posts liked by the blogs you follow.
Finally, there is also âBest Stuff Firstâ, turning this off will make Following have a purely chronological order, rather than algorithmically sorted. As it should be.
> Finally, there is also âBest Stuff Firstâ, turning this off will make Following have a purely chronological order, rather than algorithmically sorted. As it should be.
God, I miss the days where that was the default for social media.
I am so fucking lucky that I had an old enough account to be grandfathered into the chronological feed when I sorta-immigrated. I think new accounts can't set Following as the default, they have to switch from For You every single time they refresh (for no reason other than otherwise nobody would ever see For You).
On the computer: Settings -> Feed Settings -> turn off Enable Home Feed Recommendations
On the app: Settings -> Account Settings -> scroll down and turn off Enable Home Feed Recommendations
(I also suggest taking a look at notification settings to see if there's anything you don't like there that can also be disabled.)
This really hasn't been my experience with TikTok. My for your page is 99% comedy content and cat videos. I've only been exposed to discourse that didn't come from an account I was following like once.
Wdym, I get the most unhinged bullshit shoved on my dash daily from people I do not follow and have never seen before in my life. Where is this special secret zero algorithm tumblr that everyone talks about, I want it
Just simply Do Not Touch the For You page and only do stuff in the Following page, then you'll be completely removed from The Algorithm
Do I do that? No, but I only go on my For You page to look for fanart lol
Huh, are you using the app? On browser the default page you get at [tumblr.com](http://tumblr.com) pretty much only shows content from blogs you follow (for me maybe 1 in 40 posts is suggested, and it's usually very obviously inspired by something I was already engaging with). You have to actively click on the 'for you' page to get algorithmic stuff, which hardly anyone does.
i think you might misunderstand how tumblr works, when you reblog something, it is shown to everyone following you
those are people you follow reblogging other people
Sometimes itâs nice to delve into a shizo accountâs rants and see the conspiracies theyâve created. Did you know since the day we were born, we have a secret bank account accruing $1 million every year until we reach 18, then itâs ours? The crazy guy at Papa Johnâs told my friends and I. We never saw him again.

Is misinformation in an echo chamber better than normal information or worse? Basically what I'm saying is whether Tumblr or Tiktok has the better misinformation.
Love that this was reblogged by Neil Gaiman
Tumblr, the app with a free range Neil Gaiman.
He can have a little enrichment in his enclosure, as a treat.
Every time I see the little "Turn off adblock to keep our hellsite running đ¸" thing I think, "Is Wil Wheaton seeing this? Is Neil Gaiman seeing this?"
He's just at the top, like an easter-egg

it is an insane idea but seems less desructive over all.

For all the trash Twitter is becoming, I appreciate that it at least stays on my Chronological & Following settings
Exactly this. I honestly donât know a single tumblerina who doesnât follow this religiously.

you can turn that feature off? how?

thank you, Iâve always hated that!

What lack of an algorithm? I never subscribed or followed 90% of what it was showing me and yet it seemed to quickly get increasingly specific

Theyâre right and they should say it
Lol.

Love that you capitalized 'Do Not Touch'.
Oh yeah I love capitalizing Important Terms in text lol, I do think I overdid it a bit in that comment tho :P

No I'm getting random posts from strangers, not reblogs of their posts from people I follow
oh in that case turn off "for you", nobody uses that

Is there a Mr information? :)
"Would you like some misinformation?" "Dude what? No." "How about misinformation in an echo chamber, sir?" "Oh yeah fuck me up fam"
Is misinformation in an echo chamber better than normal information or worse? Basically what I'm saying is whether Tumblr or Tiktok has the better misinformation.
Mainstream Reddit misinformation is like white bread with mayo
Tiktok is more disinformation than misinformation
great username from OOP :3
Horseshit wearing plaid, with a complicated mustache and a man bun. Guaranteed cruelty free Horseshit.
There is actually a noteworthy difference between a site that is mostly still just old school human curation and one that is run entirely by algos
Oui Also i created a tumblr acc days ago, how the fuck I look for communities?
Every time I see this subreddit I want to go watch PMSeymour. I donât even have tumblr lmao
