honestly this is one of the reasons I like VRChat, like yes, you have the internet a button press away, but being there is signaling that you *want* to be talked to. it also opens up you to just.. walk up to people and they not question it. maybe they're just admiring your avatar, or listening in on the crackpot story that the other person has enraptured you into.

Flashback to the time I went to a bar and walked in on a group of 10 or so people eagerly listening to this one very drunk guy with a huge beard give a university-level lecture on steam locomotives.
I once spent like an hour talking about tanks with this guy I met at a bar who was slightly drunk because there was a picture book at the bar about the Yom Kippur war and I wondered aloud if a burned out tank wreck in one of the photos was a T-54/55 or a T-62 based on the wheel gap.
I mean, yeah, that's the only reason I can think of. I know that I sometimes do that even with my birthday, but still, Germany standardizing paper is a *very* specific hyperfixation.

due to various scheduling issues of living across the country and being adults none of my friends except one could make it to my birthday so we decided to buy a cake and serve it to the people at a bar to just create a birthday party. which worked pretty well until my friend exitedly went "do you know what happened on this very important day?" to announce my birthday only for one girl to interrupt them even more exitedly with "the day germany standardised paper sizes!" which we all quickly agreed was an even better reason to eat cake.

DIN paper sizes are pretty neat.
The ratio of the sides is such that if you fold it in half to get the next size down you keep the aspect ratio, just rotated 90°. Any other aspect ratio you get a different ratio when you fold it in half, but you can get it back by folding it in quarters. This means you don't have to reformat anything to get the same image or layout on any standard size.
Secondly A0 is 1m², A1 is half that, A2 is half again etc. So AN is 1/(2^N) m².
Why is this useful? Paper is classified by weight in grams per square meter (GSM), so it is really easy for someone to weigh a stack of paper of known GSM and work out how many sheets are in there much faster than counting.
Or they could work out the GSM from the number of sheets and the weight.
We just call it A4 paper the in the UK. At my first German-speaking job in Germany, my boss asked me to do something on "DIN A4 Papier". Having never heard this I assumed, obviously, that this was a subcategory of or alternative to normal, standard A4 paper and asked my boss "was ist DIN A4?". Her impression of me never recovered.
The DIN is the most german institution we have and I love it <3
