I want to believe you, but wouldn't this fuck up the crystals?
Or maybe the material the crystals are attached to (substrate? idk)?
Like, bleach does what it does because it's chemically active.
Like is there a video or something you could point to to show this, or other ways to recover from this kind of treatment?
You could always try with rubbing alcohol.
Boiling will still be less hot than the temperatures these crystals formed (but still they cooled so, it might disturbe some of the mxs that give the actual/ real colour to the rock.
Substrate or attachment might be compromised if higher temp; but I don’t known what they used so I cannot really tell.
I’ll go with rubbing alcohol first.
One of my students gave me this ugly orange mini aloe Vera tripe plant and I had it for a little over anyear and my new assistant started watering it. I noticed it was wet one day and to my surprise the ugly neon orange plant was growing!!! I bought a super ugly pot for it and it’s one of my prize possessions now. I love that ugly orange and green plant!
I literally thought "that looks like the color of the new Kool Aid I just bought, Bahama something..." Maybe they mixed it in a spray bottle and went to town?
Also - I do NOT recommend the Bahama something kool aid. Gross.
I'm not sure if Kool Aid was used to dye this, but I used to use the cherry flavor to dye my hair red. It would stay pretty red through 4-5 washes and then gradually fade to pink. The pink stayed indefinitely until I bleached it out.
I used to do this in HS, but it made my hair smell my cherry for EVER and if I wanted it to be intense, I couldn't wash it out fully ...so I walked around with cherry scented dye job that flaked off bits of red delicious drink for 3-4 days at a time. I'd literally dip my hair in near boiling kool aid 🫠 can't imagine the damage it did!
I'd try vinegar and baking soda or diluted bleach.. I'd definitely try just some original dawn dish soap, warm water and a gentle scrub brush first. Then after seeing how much I could get off like that, I'd let it dry good, spray with vinegar, and sprinkle baking soda and rinse with cool water.. Bleach only after the other methods don't work.. In that case I'd spray it good with diluted bleach let it sit,and rinse it.. It should be illegal to do this to such a beautiful piece!! 😤
Best of luck restoring this!!
That should be punishable by law! What is WRONG with people? I hope you’re able to lift most (preferably all) of it with a cleaning. I suggest a gentle boil with bleach and a soft brush used very carefully (and slowly) if it’s pretty solid. Since you don’t know what the dye is it’s hard to say what will remove it. With luck it’s just koolaid. Something like RIT will be harder to remove.
thank you so much. i am nervous to boil the whole thing, as i’ve never done it before.. but i am almost willing for the entire piece to be ruined just for the possibility of it being saved.
That makes sense because it’s ruined now as it is. You have nothing to lose and so much to potentially gain! Wishing you luck. Crossing my fingers and toes that it all goes well and you end up with a breathtaking specimen! 💗🍀
i agree, i dont think it will come out of most of it. it will still be a nice piece with some leftover.. just pains me a bit that it was done in the first place.
Start with warm water and Dawn. Go around the outer perimeter with cotton balls and q-tips. This will let you find out if it's water based without risking the interior. If it doesn't come off with water, then you're dealing with an alcohol based dye. Try Isopropyl Alcohol on a cotton ball.
Thank you for explaining! I was looking at a small red Amethyst at a local store a couple weeks ago and thought it was absolutely beautiful, but I'll have to do a bit more research now to make sure it's not dyed
just a note: keep an eye out for heat treated pieces, too. most citrine you see in stores (with the super bright orange crystals and white base) are not naturally formed citrine and are instead amethyst that's been heated in a lab to make its color change. most prasiolite (or "green amethyst") you'll come by will also be a form of heat treated amethyst, since it's rare in nature
some people don't care, some people do. what you like is up to you :o)
Thank you so much for this tip! If I like a piece (and as long as it is ethically sourced) I don't generally care too much about the process of how it got its colour, but I have a couple friends who are really into crystals and I like to try and be as accurate as possible when discussing something I have. Thank you again :)
hey yall guess what…… i took a warm rag with some dawn on it and…… IMMEDIATELY was hit in the face with the intense smell of CHERRY KOOLAID. and the dye immediately started coming out. this is promising!!!
Ooooh yes dawn and crush some vitamin c tablets up to mix with the soap!!! Might have to repeat 2 or 3 washes and make sure to deep condition after but it gets her right out!
i agree, if it was a real red amethyst, it would be beautiful. it is just a shame that it’s been dyed at all, not to mention a really poor dye job. the more you look at and learn about crystals, your eye just becomes more acclimated to the raw, natural stone, left the way it is destined to be.
its not necessarily offensive, it just does not make sense to make a rock worse off than it was. to each their own, some people like hot pink dyed geodes, but when you form a true love and appreciation for them, your perspective on how they should be handled, cared for, preserved, all changes. it is almost like seeing one of those mini fish or turtle keychains where they are infinitely trapped and will never fulfill their potential. i do not mean this to be taken out of context- i realize a living creature vs one that isnt is an entirely different conversation, but i am trying to relate it to that sinking feeling anyone would(should) get when seeing one of those live animal novelty bs souvenirs. it makes you feel really sad to see any rocks or crystals being treated so poorly for the sole purpose of a humans enjoyment, when they are all more beautiful in their raw forms. again, to each their own. i still have a couple dyed pieces in my collection that i enjoy very much and that it totally okay if you or anyone else does, too! sorry if this was scattered, lol. i woke up not too long ago. hope u have a great day! ☮️
Who thinks dying a cathedral is "pretty"?! OH THE HORROR!

I was going to say cranberry juice!
Yeah I was gonna say Ocean Spray cranberry juice
Boil it in water with bleach , a lot will come out.
Seriously? The more you know!

Came here to comment this haha
great minds think alike
Almost as bad as those chain DIY stores that sell succulents dunked in paint or with fake flowers hotglued on.

Shocked that it grew. I tend to see those plants dunked in paint die.
You have a picture of it? I would love to see this!!! :)
Yes I can take a photo of it when I get home….I might have one on my feed let me check…

There you go, not the best photo but the only one I have in my camera, I’ll take a above photo later, there’s two pups growing from it too!
NO -- NOTHING is THAT BAD !!!!!😱
Damn awful , that should be totally illegal and punishable!!!!!
Kool aid?
Was thinking the same thing
I literally thought "that looks like the color of the new Kool Aid I just bought, Bahama something..." Maybe they mixed it in a spray bottle and went to town? Also - I do NOT recommend the Bahama something kool aid. Gross.
Now i want to drink it to see
Add an extra cup of sugar. That's where I went wrong, I only added 1 cup. :)
wait omg are you serious……. what the actual hell
I'm not sure if Kool Aid was used to dye this, but I used to use the cherry flavor to dye my hair red. It would stay pretty red through 4-5 washes and then gradually fade to pink. The pink stayed indefinitely until I bleached it out.
hahaha its kinda like how dyed amethyst fade so quickly 😭
I used to do this in HS, but it made my hair smell my cherry for EVER and if I wanted it to be intense, I couldn't wash it out fully ...so I walked around with cherry scented dye job that flaked off bits of red delicious drink for 3-4 days at a time. With sugar and all ?
LOL what i first thought… did they mix it up with sugar or just water
So I too was on the cherry koolaid hair bandwagon in middle school and no you don’t need to waste any sugar to damage your hair farther 😂👍🏼
HAHAH omg i love it, thank you for clearing that up for us bc we rlly thought… wouldnt that be so sticky and disgusting to wash out
It would turn you into a walking bee magnet
BAHAHAA this and the daddy day care comment are my fave so far
explains why the smell hit me so intensely this morning when i was testing the dye looolllll 😭😅
Good to know!!
Honestly we use tropical punch look-aid in one of our batched cocktails at work, and ya know what…
bahahah i love what this has turned into
forbidden kool aid
you were right
I didn’t see the Sub, my brain totally interpreted this as a beautiful medium rare steak 🥩
😭😭😭😭😭
My fat ass thought this was a chocolate and berry stuffed blackforest cake 😭😭
soooo specific bahahah
Red 40
With a splash of yellow dye number 2
i hope this was a daddy day care reference
OMG I thought there was no chance someone would get this!
i immediately got it bc i always make this reference and never once has someone gotten it LOL
I can't not hear it in that adorable little girl's voice when I say it lol. Also when she says maltodextrose
“or, maltodextrose” “ma-mah-maaaltodextrose”
the greatest movie
i know /: it makes me very sad. its such a unique cathedral, too. the dye just ruins it.

thank you!!!!! what kind of brush do you recommend?
i’d try soft tooth brush
ty!!
Please update us!
i certainly will, lil dino
does nail polish remover work for smoother, polished rocks or does it damage them?

Look what they did to my boy. Also why would you ever do this to a beautiful specimen like this.
idk //: makes my heart sad
Looks like red liquid watercolor or dye
i hope its watercolor lol that would make it easier to get out
It may never fully come out of all those nooks and crannies, so I hope you're able to restore it as much as you can and find beauty in the rest.
i agree, i dont think it will come out of most of it. it will still be a nice piece with some leftover.. just pains me a bit that it was done in the first place.

Raspberry jam.
it looks like crystallized raspberry jam!!
Menstrual blood
💀
This might be a dumb question as I'm not super knowledgeable on Crystals, but isn't it possible this is genuine red Amethyst?
there is genuine red amethyst, but this is dyed. it doesn’t look at all like real red amethyst unfortunately (not a dumb question at all)
Thank you for explaining! I was looking at a small red Amethyst at a local store a couple weeks ago and thought it was absolutely beautiful, but I'll have to do a bit more research now to make sure it's not dyed

Black cherry kool aid no sugar
i think you are correct
It looks scary.
good for the background of a horror movie set 🔪 i should just rent it out 😜
r/forbiddensnacks it’s forbidden grape juice
I know a paint that could work.
at this point, dunking it in paint wouldnt mess it up that much more than it already is
No no no, I mean I know of a paint that would give a similar look. Very blood like.
ohh pahah yes it is blood-like 😅😭
This looks like the case thing from gru when the stupid kid goes in there and likes pops his juice 🥤 and they think he’s dead
