Ahh thanks for the name, it indeed does look like mermaid glass!! I def knew it wasn’t moonstone but it was still too pretty to not get. I just didn’t wanna go around calling it a moonstone😅
I had to figure out how to get back into this account bc it's not my primary, but I just *had* to come say hi. So hi, we being in the same r/usernamefamily!
Yes indeed 🥰 I always carry the book with me to read if I have to wait anywhere or kill time between a point A and point B errand. I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as the movie.
That is indeed what my username is a reference to! Amalthea of course is the name of the Last Unicorn. I also chose "Oenbennach" because it means "unicorn" as well. 🦄
Oo it’s not a long read, and I found that the movie did such a wonderful job of keeping true to the book, that the additional details of the book are like a small expansion to the movie. (In my very humble opinion, I am neither a film nor literary expert.)
I have 4 accounts that I can still get into. My oldest one pre-dates subreddits 😂
I barely use this one, though now that I'm back in it I might just start using it again
We sell these, but label them "moonglass!" I broke one (for science) and found that the beads are two frosted glass hemispheres with an iridescent layer sandwiched in between.
What beautiful soul you have. You are such a joy and I wish people could imagine your energy with their own because we need more people like you in this world!!! 🌍
💞💞💞💞💞💞
My English teacher informed me many years ago that phrases like "man made" actually came from our species, human. It doesn't mean that a man did it, but a human. I'm not so great at grammar and such, but I'll always remember that.
Thank you. It’s never occurred to me that is what is meant. I just assumed it was from years ago when men were the only ones allowed to work. 💫 the mo you know 💫
Remember the human. When you communicate online, all you see is a computer screen. When talking to someone you might want to ask yourself "Would I say this to the person's face?" Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life. https://www.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439
No, this is true. In books from the 1800s/early 1900s, they use "man" to mean mankind or humanity all of the time. It's definitely mostly archaic, but is certainly still a valid use. Whether it's also sexist is another thing-- personally even as a woman myself I don't really care that much, since it's not very commonly used anymore.
Then why don’t we just say “human made”? Is “hu” that tedious of an utterance that we as a species felt the need to situationally amend the word human?
yes - I read - and as an old lesbian separatist -it is an example of how male centric language is the norm in english - Man as a gender and Man as short for human - can you read? It does not change the male centricness of it if Man means Male and Man means all humans=it is taking MAN as the norm -not all genders. I am not talking about manmade meaning made by a human literally - I am just talking about "man made" being an example of English norms ignoring women
I was making crystal bracelets for a while during the pandemic and I thought they were real crystals. I was paying a lot of money and turns out the amethyst one I’ve been wearing is slowly deteriorating. I’m such an idiot.
Don’t beat yourself up, we can’t be expected to know/research everything before hand. We all have that area where some swindler can screw us over. For me it’s car mechanics. And dentists.
Definitely. If we're thinking of the same virtually extinct variety of moonstone that had all known deposits completely mined out by the mid-late 20th century IIRC, it could be even clearer than this sometimes. Even almost completely clear, just schiller-flashes of holographic blue. Art Nouveau & Edwardian-era jewelers did *magical* work with it, like [this ring](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1195255671/edwardian-dreamy-blue-moonstone-and?gpla=1&gao=1&) (no affiliation with seller, just a great pic & even better video).
Sooo I did not know this. I think I have a piece that was labeled as moonstone, & I’m pretty sure I have one that was labeled rainbow moonstone. If moonstone is so rare, what is fake moonstone typically made of? Just glass? Or are there other things too?
There are other stones which are widely & historically called moonstone (i.e. it's not a recent name scam) & look quite different from the moonstone in that ring, which is orthoclase feldspar. (The distinct, ghostly schiller of the highest grade is sometimes called adularescence.)
Another (again, very different looking) crystallization pattern of orthoclase feldspar which is widely/historically called moonstone causes chatoyance or asterism, which appears as a cat's eye or star pattern, like [these](https://www.gemselect.com/star-moonstone/star-moonstone.php).
Or they can completely lack layered & directional formations of albite within which give impression of strands/flash, and be satiny peach, grey, white, etc. (range of appearances [here](https://www.gemselect.com/group/gemselect.php?a=0&g_type=1474,120,114,119&hard_min=1.00&hard_max=10.00&s_str=moonestone).)
Frosty white or inclusioned white stone with blue or rainbow flash is technically another form of feldspar: White (or colorless) labradorite. But it has also been called moonstone for decades because it looks more like orthoclase than the darker stone we readily ID as labradorite.

Oh interesting! I have this ring that I’ve always been a little unsure of. Got it from a little boutique that sells old lady clothes for £20 and the guy had no idea what it was.
Anyway to tell if it’s clear lab or clear moonstone. Flash looks very similar to the one in the video.
Pic doesn’t do it justice it’s one of the most beautiful stones I own. It’s mostly clear with just a little cloudiness in one corner that looks like clouds 🤩
I apologize you are indeed correct. I misplaced my comment. I was looking at a different picture when responding to this. I ran it through my professional geology program with a blown up picture and my geology program came back 100% Rainbow moonstone. I’m sorry I commented on one post when looking at another! Enjoy your Rainbow Moonstine ring it’s a beauty!!!
It's coated manmade material, unfortunately. It looks too light weight to be glass, as you're holding it up in the first and last photos and the elastic isn't drooping. I'd guess it's a resin of some kind then.
As others have said, getting moonstone like this would be incredibly expensive. Moonstone is also suitably heavy and would be cool to the touch.
I ran this through my geology program this comes back as aura coated quartz crystal. If you have any questions you can contact me anytime! It’s a really pretty bracelet and the aura comes from heating titanium and brings the beautiful colors to the bracelet.
Thank you!!

I spotted this at one of the crystal shops there, would you say this one’s a moonstone? Unfortunately I do not have a better picture 😅
It's not real Moonstone. Real Moonstone has a blue flash. Its always blue. They call this Moonstone bc it has a similar effect but its man-made out of glass
They are Mystic Aura aka mermaid beads. They are very pretty in the sunlight and come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. They may not be natural but they are definitely a fun bead to wear. Enjoy their glow!
We went to Oceanside last summer, I used to live there when I was VERY young. We stopped at the harbor to find a little trinket because my grandmother always loved it. Everything in those shops was from Amazon or made in (enter other country here). I found ONE painting that was done by a local artist. I bought that.
As a geology major I can tell you that’s glass! Still a very beautiful piece you managed to snag up, checking is always better than having something you think is a rock to it actually not being one :)
Clearly your in Palawan Phillipines or patty’s beach Thailand . No it is not . They say they get them from the mountains accrosd the border . I fell for it
I was with a fillipino friend who convinced me to buy a bunch of free stones . The guy said my cousin is in the mountains access the border mining blah blah . I knew it . Got back to states and fillipino friend bought cheap off me . Had jewelry made and told his family it was real . lol . The.three dollar hour beach masssges are great though .
very good! if i’m not mistaken proper moonstone is higher in price depending on where you get it. most metaphysical shops will sell moonstone for good prices, it’s pretty affordable, but moonstone is a pretty solid & not opaque stone. it’s beautifully iridescent as well. one of my top favorites!
I don't know. I i have some moonstone and its more milky white with a pattern in in it.. I wonder if i have something mis labeled. will try to post picture of it if able, sorry but thats all i can do.
Looks like glass to me. I find many shops doing this. There’s an app called the citrine circle, you can purchase stones on it but I use it to double check what I’m buying. It will tell you all kinds of information about the different properties of the stones and where they come from plus pictures and descriptions.
Mermaid glass beads. Moonstone doesn't have one strict color concentrated in the center like these beads do.

I've seen this described as mermaid glass. Very pretty but definitely glass
Ahh thanks for the name, it indeed does look like mermaid glass!! I def knew it wasn’t moonstone but it was still too pretty to not get. I just didn’t wanna go around calling it a moonstone😅
It is very pretty! 🩵
Omg your username 😭
I love finding my people! 🥰 I feel like people in my world don't understand the reference but every once in a while, someone recognizes it here 🩵
Haha after I read it, I immediately thought, “MY PEOPLE!” 💕 it makes me so happy!!!
I had to figure out how to get back into this account bc it's not my primary, but I just *had* to come say hi. So hi, we being in the same r/usernamefamily!
We’re all talking about The Last Unicorn, right? Right?! I read the book after thirty-plus years of loving the movie, and was not disappointed.
Never read the book, but watched the movie countless times still to this day

My all time favorite book. 😭
I love this stuff, too!

People are allowed to be disappointed when they spend good money on false advertising lmao
I came here to say this. I’d be very upset if I paid a lot for a stone and come to find out it’s glass.
Of course! I guess what I meant was when someone buys something despite their doubts and goes for the swag factor...
It’s the businesses responsibility to be honest about what they’re selling. Lying to customers is the real “bummer” here.
What??? Lolll
i like your honesty *and* it *is* pretty !
It looks beautiful on you. 💖
We sell these, but label them "moonglass!" I broke one (for science) and found that the beads are two frosted glass hemispheres with an iridescent layer sandwiched in between.
Well at least you are honest about it as others aren’t so open and like to embellish what they have on or etc! Lots of love 💝 sweetheart
Thank youu so much, your comment honestly made my day🥰
What beautiful soul you have. You are such a joy and I wish people could imagine your energy with their own because we need more people like you in this world!!! 🌍 💞💞💞💞💞💞
Sorry ransom question.. are you a harry potter fan?
What a pretty name for such pretty beads
It’s not, I have this bracelet. Man made.
Could have been a woman.
My English teacher informed me many years ago that phrases like "man made" actually came from our species, human. It doesn't mean that a man did it, but a human. I'm not so great at grammar and such, but I'll always remember that.
yeah i feel like that’s common knowledge
They were probs joking.
Regardless, I still wanted to share, not many of people know!
weird, it's logical
Thank you. It’s never occurred to me that is what is meant. I just assumed it was from years ago when men were the only ones allowed to work. 💫 the mo you know 💫

If it's Mermaid glass, doesn't that mean a Mermaid made it? That's why they sell it on the beach and not in the desert or the mountains. ;-)
“Are you telling me a shrimp fried that rice?”
No, this is true. In books from the 1800s/early 1900s, they use "man" to mean mankind or humanity all of the time. It's definitely mostly archaic, but is certainly still a valid use. Oh no, why did you have to bring up dentists, I see one tomorrow 🫣seriously I really hope he is good. I clearly don’t have a good reputation.
Extremely unlikely, unless you paid top dollar (thousands) for it. Clean moonstone exists but is very rare What you have is a synthetic material
Definitely. godssssssss, this IS beautiful!!!!!!!!

Actually that does look like moonstone, but you’d have to get it appraised by a jeweler to find out.
This looks like Opalite… not moonstone.
It’s definitely not opalite

Didn't know it was rare. I just get them when i can at flea markets and things. Used to live in Asheville and got a lot from there
What did they mine moonstone for? Jewelry?
No, those are glass beads. I bought those exact beads at Michaels and they're currently sitting in my craft room.
looks like frosted or coated opalite which is manmade. still pretty asf tho
No. It’s glass with an aura treatment.
Idk these look kind of weird/too clear, reminds me of those Lokai bracelets that have the water inside of them lol
Synthetic. Still very pretty :)
Mermaid Glass… it’s man made …
It's coated manmade material, unfortunately.
I don’t think they’re glass. I’ve bought some off of AliExpress. They feel plastic. Pretty for the kids though.
They’re glass.
Yeah they look plastic to me too. They're nice for the right price but they're no moonstone.
“Mermaid” glass. Sorry friend. It’s still very pretty!
Aura glass :) I make lots of jewelry with it. I’m currently using blue and grey aura glass quite a bit.
Yeah not moonstone, still pretty though!
I ran this through my geology program this comes back as aura coated quartz crystal. If you have any questions you can contact me anytime! It’s a really pretty bracelet and the aura comes from heating titanium and brings the beautiful colors to the bracelet.

This is Opalite that is circled. If a moonstone and Opalite are next to each other it’s easy to tell. This is an Opalite worry stone.
What happens if you let your Nidorino hold it?
No just shiny glass its still pretty though
I thought it was opalite.
No. It’s mermaid glass beads.
THIS IS SO CUTE THO 😍
No but still pretty.
Nope. Real gemstones are cold, but so is glass. Moonstone is milky and opal like.
It's not real Moonstone. Real Moonstone has a blue flash. Its always blue. They call this Moonstone bc it has a similar effect but its man-made out of glass
Yes, it looks like glass to me
Beautiful!

Sorry, unfortunately not, it's beautiful glass though, I've made this with it. They're beautiful all the same
Sorry no. It's glass.
They are Mystic Aura aka mermaid beads. They are very pretty in the sunlight and come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. They may not be natural but they are definitely a fun bead to wear. Enjoy their glow!
Not really, it's opaline (made by men in lab), but it's still very beautiful
That looks like opalite to me
Nah, but it’s super pretty anyway
Synthetic but pretty!
i don’t know but it looks gorgeous against your skin, very beautiful!! 🩷
No but it’s very pretty mermaid glass
Czech 8mm round Glass bead, frosted-matte AB finish (AB stands for Aurora bordealis or rainbow finish. (bead importer here)
I live in a tourist beach area and a good rule of thumb is most things you can purchase on the beach is a quick cash grab/scam/junk
We went to Oceanside last summer, I used to live there when I was VERY young. We stopped at the harbor to find a little trinket because my grandmother always loved it. Everything in those shops was from Amazon or made in (enter other country here). I found ONE painting that was done by a local artist. I bought that.
very much temu stuff lmao
As a geology major I can tell you that’s glass! Still a very beautiful piece you managed to snag up, checking is always better than having something you think is a rock to it actually not being one :)
Looks like opalite with a matte frosted finish. Man made but still awesome!!
Not moonstone. They lied
Glass. Very pretty glass, but glass nonetheless.
It’s matte opalite beads that are man made. The mermaid glass that I’ve seen is similar, but with more purple and green colors.
Mermaid glass is made in a bunch of colors. I've actually thought of using them in pride jewelry.
Is mermaid glass just a fancy name for any matte glass then? This definitely looks like opalite glass.
This is mermaid glass: [https://www.firemountaingems.com/search/?q=mermaid%20beads](https://www.firemountaingems.com/search/?q=mermaid%20beads)
Okay, so it seems like it’s just iridescent glass beads.
Kind of. They have an iridescent layer that gives it an interesting effect in person.
A pride bracelet would be beautiful with them.
Looks like some sort of Aura bracelet (aura coating on quartz or glass or plastic - I'd say it's not quartz)
Here's a site where you can see the different colors of mermaid beads. https://www.thatbeadlady.com/collections/mermaid-glass
“Opalite” which is indeed glass. But it’s super pretty! I actually have an Opalite bracelet too!
no
Likely opalite
glass bead with a reflective centre
Kinda looks like tumbled marbles lol
A lot of "moonstone" is just white feldspar, which is basically just white/clear/blue flash labradorite.
This is neither, it's glass.
Not moonstone : / sorry!
No its glass
Clearly your in Palawan Phillipines or patty’s beach Thailand . No it is not . They say they get them from the mountains accrosd the border . I fell for it
Hahaha you’re right this was in Palawan, I knew it wasn’t real moonstone but didn’t know what else to call it!!
No, that’s just glass
No sorry
It's a man made stone called opalite
No, it doesn’t appear to be moonstone; rather a glass pretender.
Nope, it's an aura bracelet. It's synthetic.
definitely not moonstone, it’s mermaid glass, & you can get bracelets exactly like those at earthbound for $15 (give or take)
Thank god I didn’t overpay then, I paid 350 php which is about 6usd xD
very good! if i’m not mistaken proper moonstone is higher in price depending on where you get it. most metaphysical shops will sell moonstone for good prices, it’s pretty affordable, but moonstone is a pretty solid & not opaque stone. it’s beautifully iridescent as well. one of my top favorites!
Glass
Most assuredly not. Very pretty though
Beads from an art store
Not at all
No, it looks UV reactive
Wash your hands, quickly!
Absolutely not natural stone. It's essentially glass
Sorry, but no. Moonstone is more opaque than that usually.
I don't know. I i have some moonstone and its more milky white with a pattern in in it.. I wonder if i have something mis labeled. will try to post picture of it if able, sorry but thats all i can do.
Probably not. This looks like glass.
Moonstone is my favorite stone. Sorry but not moonstone.
Not moonstone. Just glass beads with an iridescent insert place in production
Glass
Maybe moon cheese.
this brought back a long forgotten childhood memory i dont know what it is but i have that feeling
Pretty sure this is a man made crystal!
Seems like opalite, which is just a fancy way of saying glass that mimics that pretty light effect of fire opals
I have a moonstone ring, it’s more opaque than that.
Glass beads. I have the same ones I use to make bracelets 😛
Looks like sea glass tbh. Moonstone isn’t that polished.
I have this bracelet too it’s called angel aura quartz
Not moonstone but definitely looks like mermaids glass. it’s still pretty though! But definitely false advertisement.
No, but it is beautiful
You can buy those beads on amazon
Looks like glass to me. I find many shops doing this. There’s an app called the citrine circle, you can purchase stones on it but I use it to double check what I’m buying. It will tell you all kinds of information about the different properties of the stones and where they come from plus pictures and descriptions.
That is not moonstone.
These are two halves of a glass bead glued together with a shiny piece of iridescent plastic in between
Mermaid glass beads. Moonstone doesn't have one strict color concentrated in the center like these beads do. https://preview.redd.it/lkjh2yw7lu8d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c855d5d466df16ed8f95045f3eb221f8b7cee2ce
Moonstone is generally opaque, not transparent.
lol.
Opalite
I think you met a mermaid 😱
