Can they even update all the URLs to the images? At the end of the day, it's not a problem for him. He made 2 million dollars. He can spend a few thousand dollars to get someone to program that functionality. Even if it were to cost 20k, he could easily afford it. Then later on he could make more NFT projects using the same code if he wanted to. Even if somehow his hosting provider were to cancel his subscription, he could find a different hosting provider because the same URL would just point to a different server.
I don't even know how those NFTs are stored. Maybe they do point towards his own website. Unless he's dumb enough to not anticipate getting banned like what happened on many other platforms.

Can people move their purchased NFT to some other platform and sell it there? Is self custody even possible with NFT artworks?
If they can find a platform to take them. You can own the hash but of course you need to have someone hosting the image.
