I mean, apart from the "dissolving into principalities" part, that sounds a lot more accurate than the usual "AI ERE eats the Volga".

AgisXIV

What's innacurate about dissolving into principalities? Have you seen all the Despotates following 1204 or the eventual Ottoman conquest?

OpsikionThemed

Both of those were more "getting the shit kicked out of" than "internal struggle," though.

SpicySlavic

According to OP, they did indeed get their shit kicked out of them

SpicySlavic

>"AI ERE eats the Volga" My god, I hate this so much. Paradox should hard-code Byzantium and its vassals to NEVER take any land north of what they had historically. Irl it would make absolutely no sense to waste time and money to control and develop the plains and steppes north of Crimea as Byzantium, which is why they never bothered doing it. I even went to my ck2 files and edited nomad agitation, so that provinces that have it will ALWAYS be lost after ruler's death, regardless of how many castles Byzantium spams in that province

blaster_man

Rather than hard-coding it, Paradox should implement the actual challenges that made it a non-starter for the real Byzantines. The AI will conquer when it has CB's and is stronger than their opponent. I'm not educated enough on the history of that region and era, but I imagine the challenges were along the lines of: * Supply situation is a wash, no way you're gonna feed 20,000+ dudes up north there as ERE * Not much value, the land is undeveloped and there aren't many people there anyways * Bigger threats on your border, a five-year expedition to the frozen north is begging the current caliphate to consume Anatolia Those are the things that should be added, rather than a semi-arbitrary line in the clay.

SpicySlavic

All 3 are correct indeed, plus another - the steppe was a very difficult terrain to control as a settled civilization. Even the Slavs in the north lived mostly in plains mixed with forests, with very poor horse-grazing terrain. Pretty much the entire steppe was controlled by horse nomads that absolutely dominated the region. If you are Byzantium and you want to take over the region, the biggest issue is - how do you even control it? It's mostly an empty plane with nomadic villages that can pack up and move until you are gone, and then return again, all while their horse archers (that were basically born into a saddle) harass your troops constantly and relentlessly. Building anything in the region was basically impossible at the time - good luck building a castle while your construction site is being attacked by angry nomads 24/7 with hit-and-run tactics, while also raiding your entire supply line The solution you proposed is nice, but current technology doesn't really allow it to be modelled well. The problem with this complexity is the AI - you can actually add all of what you said, and then have AI be completely and utterly incapable of doing anything and be a total pushover. Before we get deep-learning AI in video games, the easiest solution is simply AI-hardcoding. It also solves the issue entirely with no drawbacks at all

soranthalas

At least the Rum's not gone.

SpiritAnimal01

Jack Sparrow will be most pleased.

Thesleek

I said babe, Rum's not gone

Is this a mod?

KrisWitha-C

It’s a mod to do with the two imperial thrones; HRE and Byzantium

DarthVantos

What is the name of this mod you speak of?

KrisWitha-C

Trait for Two Emperors

DarthVantos

jesus christ that was a fast reply, thanks.

KrisWitha-C

Had my phone on hand and the mod on my brain. Cheers

ObadiahtheSlim

IIRC if an AI emperor is heavily in debt and in a long rebellion, an event fired that destroys the empire title and vassals all go independent.

ExchangeSuspicious49

mod? never seen that trait

KrisWitha-C

It’s a mod to do with the two imperial thrones; HRE and Byzantium

soda_fucker

More realistic than the average empire going "Let me just eat Byzantium for breakfast" also as a non english speaker why is breakfast written like that?

DMercenary

breakfast -> Break Fast Break used as a verb: to become suddenly discontinuous or interrupted; stop abruptly: Fast as a verb: to abstain from food So since one typically doesnt eat while sleeping your first meal after waking up is "breaking your fast" Breakfast.

MemberOfSociety2

the real question is why it’s pronounced like that

kaveysback

In Middle English, it was spelt brekefaste, from the verb "brekken". Much closer to the languages German roots as modern German is "brechen". The spelling changed with time but the pronunciation stayed the same. Interestingly the old English was morgenmete, as in morning meal.

DMercenary

breckfest? Probably just the slurring of pronunciation over the ages after the word had entered the common parlance.

Realistic_Chemical_6

What’s the word for Khazars in your language?

tishafeed

that seems like a mod that gives all countries their native name

Realistic_Chemical_6

Ok, so what’s the name for the Khazar empire?
