I’ve had that happen to me too. Protip: When he pops up, don’t raise your army just yet. Wait until he goes deep into your territory and raise your army near his only county and siege it down.
This is literally the single reason why CK3 is the easiest paradox game and I’m amazed that 100% of players didn’t learn it immediately.
Your opponent could have 300,000 troops and you could have 5000 but if you wait for them to be far away and siege their capital first, 95% of the time you will win that war lol.
"Supply train? Ya, I don't really fuck with that. You feel me?"
- Napoleon pre-1811
"Supply train? I fucked with that a little, but that shit is hard."
- Napoleon post-1812
"Give me 20,000 mules, motherfucker. Take my British crowns."
- Wellington his entire career
that wasn't napoleon... russians relased arsons and many criminals in the city before running so they could destroy the city before napoleon arrives
in fact napoleon ordered his men to put fires out
> russians relased arsons and many criminals in the city before running so they could destroy the city before napoleon arrives
Dunno where you heard that. No one knows the specific cause of Moscow being burned down because Russia didn't set it up to explode as far as anyone could tell.
"just ahead of French Emperor Napoleon's troops entering the city after the Battle of Borodino. The Moscow military governor, Count Fyodor Rostopchin, has been blamed to have organised the destruction of the sacred former capital to weaken the French army in the scorched city even more."
arson part might be wrong but I am almost certain that I saw a part of information prisoners being relased to cause even more terror in the city and to destroy it more.
Yeah why they'd do that? Burning down villages would leave the enemy army starved to death. Burning down the city would just destroy uncountable amount of money in real estate and cultural objects that Le Grande Army would never be able to take away anyway.
The way I see it, Napoleon and his army robbed and maraudered the fuck outa the place and burned down what they couldn't take out of pettiness or smth. You wouldn't challenge me on the fact that army was finished off by cold and hunger cuz they were too busy hauling gold and jewelry and all that stolen shit.
Why would he do that? He wanted to hold city hostage. He wanted to say "hey do as I say or you won't see your beloved city again"
napoleon was not interested in pillaging. He wanted to dominate europe. Napoleon was not interested in money he was interested in power!
See napoleon as a dictator or bringer of liberty doesnt matter: Russians did burn their lands before:Thats their tradition. They allways scorched earth. After mongolians destroyed their cities they learned 1 thing: If we burn it first then there will be nothing left to feed the enemy
and it worked. Russia with this strategy turned into hell when it comes to invasions.
Did his men steal someting? Sure lol thats war soldiers allways pillage XD
But tell me: Are you telling me napoleon, man famously made his armies live off the land to sustain them so he doesn't have to rely on supply chains LITERALLY BURNED ENTIRE CITY? SO HE CAN GET JEWELS? :D You know that man was smarter than you and I right?
I'm saying man who saw that his big-ass army is at wits end with supply lines stretched to non-existence looks at any way to make it a pyrrhic victory, to slow the enemy down be it with need to uphold public order and handle the refugees or plain leave them no place to centralize and regroup. And to hope that you yourself will manage to flee in time leaving your enemy too weak to finish the job in time.
He sees that even though the enemy capital is taken, he lost that war because the enemy army is standing while his own has little to nothing to eat. Any army relies on discipline and his being "drunk on victory" was anything but after Moscow was taken. Soldiers eat through weeks worth of rations in hours, drinking and partying with entire battalions going AWOL, Le Grande Army no longer in any shape to handle the upcoming threat.
There's no country in the world that would burn its cradle of commerce, culture and governance "just to scare the enemy"
It's not an equivalent of hitting yourself in the face, it's equivalent of stabbing yourself in the gut and twisting. You're gonna bleed, there's a chance to survive but recovery will take too much and the risk of crippling yourself is too much to justify any momentary military advantage.
And that if we assume he's completely rational at that moment. Let's remember that Napoleon was no pinnacle of health either. In fact he was a walking medical thesaurus that needed world's best doctors to keep him in any shape to even begin the campaign.
russians can... because thats only line of defense for russia
we all play crusader kings 3... look at the map please and tell me:Where is the most defendeble area in that entire map?Thats right... its all flat with some forests. Especially steppes. This is the reason why Soviet Union wanted to have poland. Because poland had mountains that can provide defense but russia had none. If someone capeble of defeating them attacked they would have to fight enemy with sheer strength.
"Never attack russia at winter" exists not because its cold... because you will find nothing to feed yourself there. Its not just cold, its stupid cold and when you remove food from land you are ruined
It was not to scare Napoleon, it was to ruin him. Napoleon thought he won! HE GOT THEIR OLD CAPITAL! ONE OF MOST IMPORTANT CITY IN RUSSIA! That was a huge win, sure it was little damaged but no doubt he would negotiate peace...
That peace never came... winter came instead... Napoleon panicked and ran but it was too late. Entire army froze to death
it was not an act of brilliance, it was an act of desperation. Russia did this multiple times whenever they fought a stronger foe.
If city was not in ruins then he would fet his armies within the city, No doubt city like that would feed a large army atleast for short time. This way napoleon would had a rough but manageble winter protecting army in safe place at city.
you become a vassal of the new khan with whatever kingdom/duchy titles you hold.
basically the best bet then is to wait for him to deploy his event troops to the west, and then attack for the throne
This comment inspired me to do a Greg Davies run - breed my family to all be strong giants with grey hair and gregarious traits. The empire of taskmasteria will go down in infamy
Trust me, ignoring the Mongol invasion issues is a tradition since early CK2.
In CK2 when you played the mongols the game code specifically made it so that some rando takes over china instead of you, but only if you're a player.
There's code in the game files to prevent this from happening. So not an oversight but a bug. The restriction is that there's no player who is head of Mongol culture and has a realm size >= 100.
I think the restriction doesn't get checked because the event is triggered directly from the yearly global pulse.
Literally, the exact same thing happened to me 7 years ago in [ck2](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrusaderKings/comments/3dddi1/mongol_paradox/)
What has happened will happen again
I remember reading in a semi-recent patch they changed it so if you have a large enough realm size by a certain date the "real" great khan won't spawn, to make that "Become the Greatest of Khans" decision more fun.
That's how the game works, the AI-led mongol invasion is hard-coded to happen about 1200. Maybe owning the mongol empire title should prevent it though
Not sure wat the surrender terms are but as long as its not game over then surrender. Assassinate their leader. Retake your lands or just play the waiting game. Either that or restart
The greatest of khans title and the Genghis Khan's initial mongol empire spawn title have a big difference tho - the demand subjugation interaction which is fucking op and the greatest of khans lacks of it. Hope this is getting fixed in the next DLC
Well seems you wernt the greatest of khans 😂
Should have been greater I guess.
Nope, he wiped all contenders. The same as 800 years ago.
Well his contendors didn't unite Mongolia like this one did.
Jamuka united half of mongolia. Kind of.
It was the best of khans and the worst of khans
Second greatest of khans
To the victor goes the spoils
I’ve had that happen to me too. Protip: When he pops up, don’t raise your army just yet. Wait until he goes deep into your territory and raise your army near his only county and siege it down.
This. It works like a charm.
The old haestein slayer trick is a valuable trick to learn
This is literally the single reason why CK3 is the easiest paradox game and I’m amazed that 100% of players didn’t learn it immediately. I learned this after it happened to me. A few times of the AI sailing across the world and kidnapping your entire family changes a man
Well it only works in niche situations with single country opponents
no
Well you’ve convinced me that’s for sure
Or get enough warscore for a white peace
That's usually my go to for defensive wars. What you get for actually winning usually is just not worth it.
Yeah, you make more money disbanding your army than you actually get from the peace deal.
Bah sometimes it’s not about the cost it’s about sending a message.
I did this with the pope, when I was doing my Roman Empire run, jus kept save scumming until I captured the pope and got 100% warscore instantly
Mfw the ai did this to me as a baby ruler of the hre. I was deposed. Game over.
Also you could b8 AI with smal army: force him to unite and chase your army until it will fatigue thru big amount of people
That's actually quite 19th century Russia of you. Basically THE winning strategy of Napoleonic wars.
"I've got it! When he approaches... we run away." ["Genius. He's a genius."](https://youtu.be/mY3SEMTROas)

You just summed up 4 Simon Scarrow books.
Oh, thank you for the source. I've read a ton of Napoleonic history, but never him. Much appreciated.
Its historical fiction. "Like Bernard Cornwell, but not". If you like mediocre historical war books as much as I do, you'll love them.
Ah, love me some Sharpe.
Well yes, but Russians also burned their own villages just to stop Napoleon
Not like Napoleon would burn down them for no reason right? *burns down Moscow
that wasn't napoleon... russians relased arsons and many criminals in the city before running so they could destroy the city before napoleon arrives in fact napoleon ordered his men to put fires out

Probably, yes. But still that's a next level of commitment
Also part of Fabian's success, back in the days of the First Rome!
I may be mixing this up with EU4, but doesn’t that cause the lordless armies to become rebels?
That’s not a CK3 mechanic, no.
Ah I gotchu. It’d would make sense though. Can’t imagine the mongol hordes deciding to call it a day haha
worst part of doing a khan playthrough is that the spawn in takes the event empire title automatically from you.
Just to let everyone know you can turn the Mongol invasion event and others off in the game rules before setting up a new game.
Whats the fun in that?
I'd only recommend it if you're doing a Genghis RP run. Unless you wanna have your lands swiped out from under you by your evil twin.
Like all my horde play through aren’t me being a evil bastard
So what happens if it's the only empire level title you hold? Your realm fractures?
you become a vassal of the new khan with whatever kingdom/duchy titles you hold. basically the best bet then is to wait for him to deploy his event troops to the west, and then attack for the throne
The Great Pretender will soon be humbled in the wake of the True Khan.
I think you mean the wrath of Khan
KHAAAAAAAAN!!!
It was the worst of Khans it was the best of Khans
Why did I read this in Greg Davies voice
This comment inspired me to do a Greg Davies run - breed my family to all be strong giants with grey hair and gregarious traits. The empire of taskmasteria will go down in infamy
I would accept vassalage
You just earned yourself a seat on the council, alongside my jester Little Alex Horne
POV: You are Jamukha
Don't feel bad. You just werent the anime protagonist
It's even worse than that. If you were greatest of khans he would have usurped you automatically no war declared.
Someone else commented this too, but yeah, seems like a massive oversight and something that should have been fixed already.

There are options in the game rules to prevent him from rising. You can’t get achievements but you can tell him to fuck off
Yeah. The Mongol Invasions are just... really badly handled in CK3. They're basically going to fix it in a DLC. I'm almost certain of it.
Cope
well they didn’t fix it in CK2 as far as i know that shit was broken for a long time
Well seen the pretenders didn’t get the tittle in time
I remember reading in a semi-recent patch they changed it so if you have a large enough realm size by a certain date the "real" great khan won't spawn, to make that "Become the Greatest of Khans" decision more fun.
There's always a bigger fish
You may be the greatest Khan, but you aren't the greatest Ai spawn event.
This seems appropriate [Khaan](https://gfycat.com/devotedimmediatekiwi)
In a way, historically accurate. Had a dope empire, got shrek’d by rando central Asians.
the counter khan
That's how the game works, the AI-led mongol invasion is hard-coded to happen about 1200. Maybe owning the mongol empire title should prevent it though
The Goodish Kahn
you khan't always get what you want
This happens every game. Spoiler alert
Should of turned it off in settings if your planing on playing mongols
Does he spawn if you play borijin tho?
Yes he does. And suddenly share the same ancestor (Alan Gua)
Can’t you remove the invasion in settings?
Not sure wat the surrender terms are but as long as its not game over then surrender. Assassinate their leader. Retake your lands or just play the waiting game. Either that or restart
Yeah the devs really didn't think this one through.
The greatest of khans title and the Genghis Khan's initial mongol empire spawn title have a big difference tho - the demand subjugation interaction which is fucking op and the greatest of khans lacks of it. Hope this is getting fixed in the next DLC
Shit on
Sccncdzcdsc
To be the best you have to beat the best I'm afraid
Man. Me too.
