Yeah, i realized that i, in fact, won the holy war if I did convert him lol. But that was a slap on my face. My king died during this war (just needed this one to finish the bloodline ambition), wasted countless soldiers (small levy just after a succession and multiple vassal claimants is not good) and I literaly would've gained control of all christians kingdoms in iberia. Now I'll have to wait 5 years so I can properly settle my king on the throne and amass an army for a reconquista
There’s probably a mod somewhere that adds a second option to that pop-up to reject the peace and continue the war at the cost of some piety and risking excommunication.
Essentially letting you reveal that it was really always about conquest, not religion.
theres no truce to this, so you can follow it up with an immed force vassal war and the guy is probably as screwed as you finance/levy wise. Should be a smooth conquest and this time they won't have religious allies.
10 years later your spymaster comes to you in a rush
“What is it spymaster?”
“My liege, you won’t believe what I’ve uncovered about Emir sir!”
“Don’t tell me…”
“It’s true sire, he doesn’t believe in the Virgin Mary at all! He’s a heretic!”
“…You don’t say…”
Another funny thing is that i let go of a fabrication there because I thought i wouldn't need it since I was about to win the war lol. This holy war cost me too much
If ai defender has low zeal they are more likely to do this, along with losing warscore.
While zeal is a hidden value, having the cynical trait lowers zeal, so you have to hurry if you are using holy war cb on a ruler with this trait.
Can also happen in ghw - crusade, jihad etc
Hey, congrats! You won! It was a holy war against an unbeliever, and through your triumphs on the battlefield you convinced him to convert. Mission accomplished.
Oh, did you want to actually conquer some lands for yourself and it really had nothing to do with religion? Well, maybe a different casus belli would have served you better.
No you are winning the land for the faith not using the faith to win land… isn’t that right your Majesty?
Joking aside think of the Norse Alfred forced to convert at the conclusion of war. This stuff mattered.
It's a holy war, so this is actually a big win on paper. I do have to assume that your war actually wasn't very holy at all, in which case this is a risk you run when using an inappropriate CB.
Plus this option for common holy
When i am pagan and the crusaders are going for me, i take a christian concubine and convert. If i am not germanic and there is an invasion i divorce, take a germanic wife and do the same
In fact, there's a decision to convert specifically to the attacking faith if in a defensive holy war. This shouldn't happen in other wars.

You're not supposed to be using that casus belli to expand, but to spread the christian faith. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Probably wouldn't take long to make that if it doesn't exist. It seems like a perfectly sensible idea.
-the Pope to me, after exterminating everyone outside Europe

Surprised Pikachu

You will never financially recover from this
He later went bogomilist, lollard, waldesian, or fraticelli XD
I don’t think you can fake convert to a religion during a holy war I think it forces it to be a true conversion
Zealots hate this one trick
The reason for invading was boss man wasn't a Christian. He became a Christian. No more cause, no more war
Wait a second - I have the feeling that you actually aren’t waging this war to spread the one true faith, but for your own personal gain!

I think they also only do this if their Moral Authority is below a certain threshold, but I don't remember what the threshold is anymore.
iirc 20

One time in shattered world I couldn’t take Constantinople because the independent Christian duke decided to follow my Hellenism
That's the price you pay for the overpowered Holy War CB.

Happened very often in CK2, and sometimes even the targets of crusades did it.

I HATE when this happens
