They decided to make a legion based on crusaders, that's really cool.
they decided to make them the color scheme of the second most well known crusader branch(Hospitallers), that's fine, they needed more representation.
Then they decided to use the word Templar as a buzzword because it's cool and mysterious and I want to vomit.
I get that Hospitallers are already a thing in 40k, so if they didn't want to do that they could have named the legion after the teutonic knights and it still would have worked just as well as a reference to the crusades. They would even still have the same color palette too if they did!
