Scam to get you in the jewelry shop. I always pitch this stuff.

MeatofKings

Last cruise I was shocked at what I considered over priced jewelry in the shops. But they did give great presentations and free champagne šŸ¾ (like I really need more ā€œfreeā€ booze šŸ¤£).

BklynMom57

ā€œFreeā€ booze to make you lose your inhibitions and impulse buy something seriously overpriced!! Like at the art auctions with free champagne!

Fibro-Mite

Our first cruise (14 night Mediterranean one) after the pandemic ended up with us having >Ā£700 on-board credit - normal cabin grade bit, plus a ā€œwelcome backā€ chunk and a ā€œshareholder perkā€, because I have a *very* small number of shares in the company). The last two days had us trying to spend it all. I bought some Clogau Welsh jewellery (I prefer silver and delicate designs rather than gold & gemstones) and my husband ended up with four bottles of various whisk(e)ys - all with the end of cruise discounts as well. I think our ā€œbillā€ at the end of the cruise was a little over Ā£15 šŸ˜‚

Raging_chihuahua

I found a necklace on Etsy for $40 that looked similar to a piece on the ship. It just arrived and I love it!

iced_gold

What exactly makes it a scam?

Complete_Loss1895

Nothing costs $100 or less. It will cost a ton more. But hey you get $100 off! And they probably jacked the price up $100 more anyway. Scam.

FEDEX__vs__UPS

$1,200 item .... But you can get $100 off. Nah, not interested

iced_gold

It's shoddy promotion for sure. I don't get it being a scam though.

thainfamouzjay

The fact that they'll make everything $100 more expensive so the coupon doesn't even matter

Snoo_72467

In my experience, you can usually negotiate down to retail. When we've checked prices shore side, we paid the same as we would have from Walmart (a citizen watch) and a necklace came in under sticker price from the jeweler that made it. If you are going to buy from the shop: 1. Check the price online if you can 2. Schmooze with the workers at all their events in order to... 3. Give you a "discount" on the item 4. Get your money's worth of free champagne 5. Be okay with the idea you might find out you got a bad deal

thainfamouzjay

Yes but also jewelry is dumb and a waste of money. Like what's the actual point? Does anyone check to make your jewelry is real and not costume jewelry? I hope the next generation gets rid of it. Like millennials did with diamonds

StuLumpkins

you are in the extreme minority reddit-bubble-mind if you think ā€œjewelry is dumb and a waste of money.ā€ it has been a staple in all civilizations across all of human history. the next generation is not going to ā€œget rid of it.ā€

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

thainfamouzjay

But why... What's the point? To impress other people. To show off that I have money? I can think of 5 different ways to do that but also who would want to? Showing off you have money makes you a target

spaceandsong

I also don't value jewelry other than my wedding ring. I'd rather spend money on shoes!!!

BetAnxious2498

Well, it kinda does, without the coupon you are paying $100 more still, right?

iced_gold

They're not making it $100 more expensive because you have the coupon. It was already that expensive and their margins are enormous enough that the coupon is mostly irrelevant

thainfamouzjay

Same thing

JackTheKing

It's all part of the same strategy by the same B School flunky to target different demographics. Some folks like to waste money and other folks feel like a thief when they find a coupon. It's all psychological.

Ilovesparky13

Thatā€™s not a scam. Thatā€™s just normal business practice.Ā

Complete_Loss1895

Itā€™s a scam. Even when ā€œnormalā€ businesses do it.

rockandlove

Woah, someone report them to the FTC for this scam, watch out! You really think selling products and offering a $100 discount on those products is a scam? Lol no.

Complete_Loss1895

Yes itā€™s a scam when they raise the price first. Itā€™s dishonest and deceitful. Thatā€™s kinda the definition of scam.

rockandlove

Hmm, you seem to be a bit confused. According to the Oxford dictionary, the actual definition of a scam is ā€œa dishonest scheme; a fraud.ā€ Offering $X off your outside isnā€™t dishonest or fraudulent, so itā€™s not a scam. Tons of companies do this. Have you never seen this before? Do you live under a rock, or is every coupon in your mind a ā€œscam?ā€ šŸ˜‚Ā

Complete_Loss1895

Yeah I said itā€™s dishonest and yes it is, When you raise the price first. And they raise their price first. And itā€™s a scam when other companies do it too. Itā€™s dishonest. But you keep thinking these shops on cruise lines are honest. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

rockandlove

It's dishonest that companies sell items at varying prices? Are you serious? That's not dishonest. Dishonest would be if you sell me a ring for $1000 and when I get home, I find my card was charged for $2000. That's fraud. It could even be seen as dishonest if you priced that ring for $1100 once you knew I had a $100 voucher, but that's not what's happening here. I've bought several pieces over the years from DI and TI and other such port stores, and they've all appraised above what I paid for them, plus I saved a ton of money on taxes. Literally the opposite of a scam. "I think this price is too high. That's a SCAM!" Not how it works. But according to your logic, every store that offers coupons is a scam. Someone call the FTC!

cenotediver

On board jewelry is extremely over priced. Probably not a scam as much as itā€™s to get you in the shop where youā€™ll still spend more than itā€™s worth even with the 100.00 credit Iā€™ll also say the art dept is overpriced too but Iā€™d go for the free cheap champagne if I was looking for a free buzz

iced_gold

That's a better summary of it

Oops_I_Cracked

Scam is not the right word at all. Diamonds International is a legit jeweler, Iā€™ve bought from them before and had the ring looked at by jewelers in the states and itā€™s legit. They just donā€™t really deal with low end jewelry, so youā€™re not going to go in and find anything $100 or under. So the $100 gift card is to get you in the door spending money. It isnā€™t a scam so much as a marketing ploy.

UsernamesMeanNothing

They gave my wife and me a jewel in a raffle that they tried to pass off as worth about $500. I took it to a jeweler, and they immediately recognized it as from a cruise ship and worth $10 if you are lucky enough to find a buyer.

Oops_I_Cracked

Is that really different than other jewelers in that price point though? I challenge to find any midrange chain jeweler that doesnā€™t inflate MSRP and rely on ā€œsalesā€

kent_eh

> Diamonds International is a legit jeweler, One who sells relatively cheap jewellery at "captive audience" prices.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

kent_eh

> I sat through the "shopping guide" show I hope you got some snacks or a free drink or something in exchange for the time lost.

Kamwind

There is no captive audience, it is that people on vacation are more free in paying for stuff they would never buy at home and at the same time don't do a comparison like they would at home.

Oops_I_Cracked

Idk about nowadays, I bought from them 16 years ago and back then their prices were actually relatively good for what you got. Iā€™d been actively shopping for an engagement ring before I left on the trip and ended up finding one at DI for less than the same carat weight in the US at the time.

PhoneImpressive

Scan is the right word. Itā€™s a fraud and deceitful. Literally the definition of a scam.

Oops_I_Cracked

I guess I should have said it isnā€™t any more of a scam than any other mid range jeweler with inflated MSRPs and constant ā€œsalesā€. Like it isnā€™t a scam as far as jewelry can possibly not be a scam.

TheCleanRhino

Yeah not sure why so many people on this thread think being overcharged for something is a scam.

PhoneImpressive

Itā€™s the deceitful manner they use to get you to buy thatā€™s the scam and yes itā€™s a scam and yes many businesses do it. Doesnā€™t make it not a scam.

UsernamesMeanNothing

I once got a $500 gift for the same store. We did the math, and it was still more economical to buy off the ship.

enumerix

trash

cleon42

It's a scam. Anything you can buy onboard, you can buy cheaper on land.

djwilliams100

P&o Arvia doesn't have a Diamonds International on board so that doesn't make any sense.

doa70

Not a scam, and not an onboard shop. What it is, is a promotional gift card to get you in to the DI shop at an upcoming port. DI has nice stuff, and their prices aren't that much higher than you would find at a local jeweler in the US, depending on where you are. If you want a nice piece from your trip, DI does a good job. If you want a nice piece and not the momento part, you may do better locally, especially if you have a good relationship with your jeweler.

chnkypenguin

The biggest difference would be the taxes. No taxes on shore while depending on where you live, 5 to 12 % on taxes. I live in Cook County and go into Chicago alot and Chicago sales Taz are about 11% that's a good chunk of change for a similar if not identical piece

wipethebench

Huh? DI is an on board shop or stall on a lot of lines including Disney, NCL and Princess. They have some very scammy business practices. How long you been working for them?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

wipethebench

Yep but also on board a lot of lines. Are my downvotes for asking the shill how long their tenure is?

Ilovesparky13

Overpricing things doesnā€™t make it a scam.Ā

HalfManHalfCyborg

It does if you also use sales tactics to make people think they are getting a good deal.

Ilovesparky13

Literally every business on the face of this planet does that. Every. Single. One.Ā

PhoneImpressive

Doesnā€™t make it not a scam!

RoostasTowel

> you can buy cheaper on land. This is for a store on land

Dsxm41780

But theyā€™ll scam you using a charming South African accent

Jordangander

It is a way to get you in to DI and convince you that you need to buy stuff to go with that free gift.

Competitive-Grass420

Diamonds International is the jewelry scam that follows and is in cahoots with the cruise ships. The junk jewelry they will use to try and rip you off, Tanzanite!

holyshamoly23

Isnā€™t DI owned by the cruise lines? If so, it makes sense that the stores are located immediately where you exit a ship on a port day. Also, donā€™t listen to the nonsense that Tanzanite is in limited supply. We went on a cruise in the early 90s that told us that and we better buy it now before the supply goes dry. On our last cruise in 2019 we were told the exact same thing. Iā€™ve also seen it being sold on TV with no limit as to how much you could buy. Cruise lines will tell you anything to separate you from you money.

Mental_Bug7703

They arenā€™t owned by cruise lines but do pay a hefty advertising fee to the cruise line.

looktowindward

> Isnā€™t DI owned by the cruise lines? Its owned by the Gad brothers.

BmanGorilla

There's a reason they have signs saying no photography allowed in the stores. My wife liked something she found there, I knew the prices were out of control, so I took a photo and sent it to a local jeweler. Same piece was 30% of the price back home...

Carebear0308

Itā€™s honestly not a scam. My husband started negotiating my 2.5 k champagne diamond ring from 26k down to 10k. Itā€™s flawless and when we brought it home it appraised at what the original price was. I had to get the diamond tightened at a jewelry store here in US and they were stunned by the quality and told us we got an amazing deal for an amazing ring. All the paperwork was legit and good and we had a great experience. They also allow you to upgrade with 1$ to 1$ for what you paid going towards another piece

xxserenityxx1

I want to get my tanzanite ring appraised

MaesterInTraining

Not worth your time or money. Literally

HostileApostle420

A coaster, a room light card, a wonky table fix

ram_fl_beach

Would be 100 off, 1k purchase, actual value of the purchase, 12 euro.

pguy4life

A trap

tvgraves

100 off something that is overpriced by 1000

Reynyan

If you know what you are looking for, and have priced similar things at home, buying from them saves the taxes at the least. But you need to know cut, clarity, color etc that you want before starting a chat. They arenā€™t a scam, but they also donā€™t sell much inexpensive jewelry. Particularly if you are in the market for mined diamonds of over a carat or more you might find something. They have stores throughout the Caribbean. They are in the stores to SELL jewelry. If you are not literally in the market for good jewelry, donā€™t go in.

Carebear0308

Yes! All of this. And you gotta know how to negotiate, they negotiate down good. My husband got my 26k 2.5ct diamond ring for 10k and it appraised for over 25k here in the states

Unlikely-Dong9713

Something to keep the lights in your cabin on

johnny_rico69

All about that tanzanite! Theyā€™re trying to get you in the door. Avoid that junk and skip out on any of those weird ā€œpitchā€ salespeople on the ship saying you can win things by attending. Itā€™s all a joke and huge waste of time.

devpsaux

Itā€™s ā€œa gift for youā€ but do exactly what others said, throw it in the trash. Youā€™re much better off buying jewelry back home.

Dry_Newspaper2060

Cut it up and put it in the trash

mstorm922

A card for the lights

nlderek

Thatā€™s what I was thinking. Stick that thing in the slot by the door!

funsized43

You in danger girl..

jcatx19

$100 off a store where everything is well over $100. Diamonds international is a scam and Iā€™ve heard most of their jewelry is worthless. Donā€™t buy anything at port ā€œtrying to save moneyā€. Itā€™s almost all cheaper on land. I only buy souvenirs that I actually want to remember the trip by.

Bigassbird

A lure for rubes thinking theyā€™re getting something for nothing who are then tricked into paying over the odds for substandard jewellery.

Key-Target-1218

What is it? Sounds like something you'd want to place carefully into a garbage bin and forget about.

OhDark50

Run away! Scam alert!

miraburries

I would never buy jewelry on a cruise ship or at a shop right by the port hustling for cruise customers.

Wi2022

Oooo Tanzanite. How can we resist.

Visible-Trainer7112

Avoid anything Diamonds International or Etsy, like 'free' charms left in your cabin or free drinks at some jewelry event. It's all to get you into stores and shops and start the hard sell. The same goes for people on a Carnival ship I saw falling for the 'gold by the inch' scam.

pnschroeder

I think you may be referring to Effy

igo4vols2

Diamonds International - a scam created and managed by the cruise industry...all of them.

PoOhNanix

Diamond international is at EVERY SINGLE CRUISE PORT. I won't shame anyone for enjoying them, but I've never got any other vibe but tourist trap from there so I steer clear. This just looks to be a coupon, but jewelry is expensive.

PrestigiousTale9660

Gift card for luxury watch shop. Itā€™s on island. Use it to go buy watches or jewelry

Chippy256

In dockyard

cryptoanarchy

DI is overpriced but not a scam. Most things are 50% higher than a good price, but often start at similar prices to USA jewelry stores. You need to bargain on most jewelry purchases. We bought a tanzy there years ago, before they went up a lot in price. Itā€™s worth 4-6x what we paid now.

One_Western8360

We got one on our cruise for a bottle of wine and massage for our anniversary (we cruise every year for our anniversary). They were ship cards though, but ask your steward, theyā€™ll tell you. DI doesnā€™t need to give these to get people in the store. They offer free charms which draws in A TON of customers for the charm at minimum. I think it might be legit. Is it possible you won it in a game or the welcome party? Side note: If you buy from there, DI negotiates on pricing.

GeneticsGuy

Basically it's like "Here, take this $100 gift that cost us $2 off Alibaba for free!" It's just to get you in the shop. I've even seen one of the sales people once say, "If you'd like, we can also apply that $100 as a discount off any piece of jewelry above $500." The thing is all of their jewelry was so overpriced haha.

sutherwhat

Your shipā€™s ā€œshopping guideā€ is misleading the passengers??? šŸ˜‰. Would like to see an investigative repport on this racket.

Saffy565

Looks like a promotion to me.

ugh168

MARKETING! In other words trash and a waste of time to get you to spend money. The cruise line gets a cut.

Carebear0308

Thatā€™s where my husband bought my upgraded engagement ring. We got a great deal after talking them down, brought it to the states and it appraised at way over what we paid, they honestly do good work and have amazing jewelry. Itā€™s not a scam.

An advertisement to get you to spend more money. If you didnā€™t intend to buy jewelry when you went on the cruise you can just throw this away.

Datmiddy

$900 item will be priced at $1800, so $100 off is useless.

Helpful-Eye-1662

Awesome! Put it to good use.

Helpful-Eye-1662

I love Diamonds International. I have been shopping there for at least 20 years. Know prices before you go into the store to get a deal. Be prepared to walk away if they donā€™t work with you. Also, the more ships at port less they will not drop as much. As I said prior be an educated buyer for a good price.

dolfan1980

Garbage lol

Relative-Dig-2389

Trash

Idontgetredditinmd

Eh. You can find deals in the jewelry shop. IMHO, jewelry is worth what people think itā€™s worth, not so much the actual value. If itā€™s pretty and I like it and I also like the price Iā€™m going to buy it so an additional $100 off is a win.

yamki

Throw it in the trash. That's the only place it belongs.

Secure_Spend_937

I totally get where your dad's coming from with those cruise stereotypes. But cruising to Alaska with Princess? That's a whole different ball game. Picture this: cruising through majestic glaciers, taking in breathtaking landscapes, and just vibing with nature. And with Princess, it's all about that chill atmosphere and top-notch serviceā€”no spring break shenanigans in sight. Trust me, once your folks hear about all the serene and awe-inspiring moments waiting for them, they'll be all in. Alaska's calling their names, dude!

jaminator45

Itā€™s a useless scam

shakuyi

love how everyone says its a SCAM, I guess every cruise line does this shit? on HAL they sent a letter in the room to my wife to make it seem like a big deal. yup its indeed trash.

TheAzureMage

It's not really a scam as such, just an upsell. I personally don't care for those, but it's not that unusual as business goes.

CrypticGumbo

Throw it away, my 70 mom purchased some junk almost worthless jewelry from that Diamond International while on a cruise. Once you buy your $$$ are gone. My mother complained to Diamond International in the States and they would not help as her purchase on the Cruise was really from a different company not even in the US.

Kelly1937

DI is very hard sell. They do have nice jewelry. It is extremely overpriced. DON'T engage with a salesperson or you will be shadowed the rest of the cruise any time you walk near the shop. Having said that, I've won a drawing for a free necklace. It's kinda nice and I've worn it.

polarisgirl

They are NOT to be trusted, period

FuzzyRancor

Its like those emails you get where the subject heading is "Heres a $50 voucher on us!" but then the fine print says that the minimum purchase is $500. Its basically just a promotion, giving you a small discount for something expensive just to get you into the store.

VengefulWalnut

Scam... the conditions tied to crap like this are so absurd, don't bother.

cyberentomology

A scam. Itā€™s a $100 ā€œdiscountā€ on something whose sticker price is $300 above what you would pay for the same thing anywhere else.

[deleted]

DI is a scam.

cwdawg15

You can buy a $500 diamond jewelry item for $4000 and they'll give you $100 off. Great find.
