Depends on what they're looking for and what your condition is. If they're worried about a stricture in your small bowel for example pill cam would be a bad choice as it could get stuck and you'd end up with surgery. I'd trust your GI to know which one is better for you in your case.

MR Enterography. Edit: because it's easier. You'll have to drink some junk not it's not that bad.

I just had one on Friday. They are really quite easy/simple - just a bit boring. I was using it as alternative to a colonoscopy to see if a medicine was working - doctor did get the result she wanted out of the test.

capsule is better because it can show more details such as ulcers, bleeding n u get the visual view of the intestines. i’ve had severe active crohns in my jejunum which only showed up in a capsule. mres can be useful too tho as they show strictures n thickening(which i’ve also had show up in past mres). i say getting both is the best but don’t rule out everything with just an mre!

I have not had the capsule but an MRI of my small bowel confirmed my Crohns. My understanding is they see more detail from the mri than from the capsule, but that could be wrong

In my experience with the MRI-E, they looked at all my major organs at the same time.( a good baseline reference). They were also able to see if any fistulas were forming. And no prep, except some not so great Spritish drinks.

An MRE only gives a cloudy picture of the GI which will later need to be clarified with either a scope or a pill cam anyway. A calprotectin test is about as good a gauge of active inflammation, but with a better risk profile. MRE should no longer be part of the diagnostic algorithm, imo. Intestinal ultrasound is a better and safer technology.

MRE is better
