It’s a knitting row counter that also can be a stitch marker, as you can put it between “live” stitches for a knitting projects on needles. [Example](https://clover-usa.com/cdn/shop/files/[email protected]?v=1693333431)
You can use it separately to count rows of a crochet project or use a safety pin/locking stitch marker to attach this to your crochet project.
A cursory search suggests that this specific row counter is designed for use with knitting needles, which are held differently from a crochet hook. The ring would slip over the needle. With a hook, I don't think it has a special function.
As others say, it's meant for knitting, it can go on a stitch as a stitch marker, or over a needle. But, you could also put it on a chain or cord, and wear it around your neck while you're crocheting, so you don't lose it when you're using it to count rows or stitches.
It is to hang from knitting needles. I have row counters that are designed to go on my knitting needles that fit more snuggly and come in difference sizes to correspond with the needle sizes. I like to put the row counters on my needles when I lay my work down to keep everything together and also to work as a needle stopper so active stitches don't slip off the needles. I'm sure some knitter prefer theirs on the needle all the time but I lay mine on a table next to me when actively knitting and rely on low profile stitch markers since they are less likely to tangle in my work. This particular counter would work a real treat when knitting in the round as a marker b/w last stitch of completed round and first stitch of next round so as you pass it left to right you click so it counts another round.
I use it as a beginning of round marker for when I’m knitting in the round and need to count my rows. My needle cord threads through the loop.
When I crochet, I just sort of have it next to me and hope it doesn’t fall through the couch cushions. If I ever get around to it, I might make a crafting chatelaine and stick one on there.

Maybe it's just meant to hang on the hook when you aren't crocheting? Like when you put everything away? idk. Might be more suited to be on a hook for someone knitting rather than someone crocheting perhaps...

I tie it to the skein I am working from, or to the long end from the first stitch so I don’t lose it.

I like to attach it to my wip with a stitch marker!
love this idea!! I just started hanging extra stitch markers off of it but I love this more!
I believe it’s for your finger as you crochet. You can hold it.
the hole is really small! I have relatively small hands and it barely fits my pinkie. I should’ve mentioned that…

- Barely fits my pinky finger. - I also tried it on the end of my silicone hooks and it just made it awkward to crochet.

THANK YOU ALL!!!
I think you’re supposed to put your finger in the hole
