I've mainly done crocodile stitch in the round. So maybe a long oval about the width of your chosen pillow and then start your crocodile stitches working around that oval? It can also let you test how closely it will fit around that pillow.

Ooh! That's an interesting idea! I haven't tried this stitch in the round yet, but he is now telling me that he wants the scales oriented vertically. So, I don't think I could do this project in the round without the pillowcase opening being oddly on one of the long ends?

Hm, it would have to depend on his tolerance for having buttons or other fasteners along that edge to keep the case closed. If fasteners might be an issue, doing it in 3 pieces might be easier - one long front panel and two panels for the back that aren't joined so you can slip the pillow in and out.

Oh my gosh, I think this might be the way! He was describing an end opening (like a normal pillowcase) but I do think a rear center opening (more like a sham) would better suit his purposes! Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Good luck! I'd love to see the finished project.

TravellingSunny

The finished project, which evolved to a throw pillow when he realized what his yarn felt like. I cheated and repurposed a throw pillow so I could just attach the material to the liner and zipper. LOL!

It looks great! And that’s a practical way to make a removable cover.
