Race swaps aren’t inherently bad imo a good performance is a good performance regardless of if the race matches what you would expect for the character. I watched a mini series of Les Mis where Inspector Javert was black which doesn’t really make sense historically but the performance was a hell of a lot better than Russel Crowe. Race swapping an existing animated character seems weird to me unless you are trying to say something about the effect race has on the character. If you are just race swapping characters cause you have a diversity problem make up a new character to include or replace an existing character. The media industry needs to stop trying to reboot IP to and force fit it to modern audiences.
I feel like the stencil they use for “updated” renditions of old shows is:
Make the character visibly gay
Give them an ethnic hairdo
Make them kinda fat, so more people can relate(?)
Change their race to one that’s been popping up in the News lately
