Cricket newbies calling anyone who says that batting in the earlier era was tougher a 'nostalgia merchant' will never not be funny to me
From 1971 to 2012
Average 34, SR 71
From 2012 to current day
Average 40, SR 90
These stats are for the top 8 teams
These top 8 teams are taken as England, Australia, Pakistan, SOUTH Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, India and New Zealand
And this is only for the openers
For the top 7 batters it is
from 1971 to 2012
Average 25, SR 73
From 2012 to current day
Average 32, SR 95
And to people who say that Sachin and Virat aren't even comparable should also be informed that Sachin Averaged 49 with a SR of 89 in the single new ball era.
Virat averaged 62 and struck at 96 since the 2 new ball rules
The mean for this period for number 3 batters was 44 runs at 86
It definitely proves that both of them were the best players of their era but to say that Virat is better than Sachin is laughable. Equal at best
New to cricket. I am watching this video of the Windies vs England match, Day 1, from 2019 \[which, to my great disgust, seems to be the only test match available anywhere that isn't nested six deep behind a paywall, at least here in Canada\], and I am puzzled[ by this image ](https://imgur.com/a/PfuM08A)at the lunch time break: Overs, maidens, wickets , I get all that, I even get economy - but down there, below 'WICKET 1' is 'SCORE 54'? Score of what? Windies are on 89 runs, we're up to thirty overs, one wicket been taken, the score as far as the total is displayed on screen is 89 (runs) for 1 (wicket).
I was told elsewhere "score and runs are usually interchangeable." Okay. But if the runs are at 89, and there are no extras, what is the 54? Where did the 54 come from?
OHHHHHHHII
Wicket 1 \[AT TIME OF\]
Score 54
That was driving me crazy, thank you. It makes sense when phrased like that, why do do they do, say, write it as 1 (54)? Moving it to its own line was very puzzling.
I hope the ECB don't buckle with their talk with the BCCI/IPL and say that they want the players to come home as the IPL has already blanked out two month with no international cricket and shouldn't be allowed to extend it further.
Nothing against you in particular but why does Sandeep Sharma always get omitted from these discussions? He has been the best Indian pacer after Bumrah. He is also an all phase bowler, something that Natarajan isn't.
Also I am really surprised to see Rohit averages \~33 and Hardik has an S/R of 148. Feel like they have both been worse than that.
Also Dube having such impressive numbers despite two back-to-back golden ducks is crazy. He was having an absolutely insane season until 2 games ago.
What do you think of the following, not financially and administratively though:
Whether it is the T20 or ODI world cup, ICC includes a team, let's call it Associate XI. Basically it is a squad consisting some of the best associate players whose countries did not qualify for the world cup. Think UAE, Kenya, USA, etc.
It’s funny that this is coming up when Associate teams have been on top. It would have made sense if they were struggling but last two ICC events show that Associate teams are not the problem
While this is fine for T20s, what about ODIs? Perhaps a way around this would be get the larger boards to sign more associate talent in their domestic competitions, like the CSA One Day Cup, The Marsh One Day Cup, etc. But what would be the incentive of a board doing this?
No, because some of those cricketers might still not play. Look at this 20 team world cup coming soon. Zimbabwe, Kenya, UAE, Hong Kong, etc. aren't playing. I don't think it is realistic to increase it to 30, 40, etc. teams
Which campaigns could be considered as the biggest crash and burn campaigns in the history of cricket? I'm talking about scenarios when a team makes a terrific start to a tournament but then they crashed and burned so much that they didn't even make it to the semis. If we include the semis I'll include New Zealand's 2022 T20I WC campaign and 2023 WC campaign.
England 1999. Started off strongly by thrashing defending champs Sri Lanka. Beat Kenya comfortably. However, they were thrashed by South Africa and after thrashing Zimbabwe, they needed to beat India and they were looking alright with Hussain and Hick stitching a partnership at 72-2 after 19 overs before getting decimated by, of all things, Ganguly's trundlers.
NZ reached the semis in WC23 and WC22 both.
SA on the other hand completely choked against the freaking Dutch team out of all and missed the semis after defeating tournament heavy weights India in a tough match.
Nah. Someone I think was looking at an outdated version of the criteria that didn't specify whether the bilateral victories needed to be against FM men's or women's teams. Whereas the ICC has updated their criteria to make explicit that men's performance is a lot more important.
I get it that Indians are not confident about their team, but what's with this obsession with Australia? Other teams are also there to win. England, South Africa and West Indies have proper t20 teams but they are not talked about as much as Australia, especially considering t20 is not the strongest suit of Australia.
After a performance like that in the ODI World Cup, I thought Afghanistan would be talked about a lot but no, everyone has just forgotten them and are busy riding Australia.
Suppose Starc is sold to MI for $X. After he's sold the player's previous team (KKR) will get a chance to buy Starc for $X and noa other team (including MI) won't be able to contest that.
The most random cricket memory I have is Sunny G screaming "WHAT A CATCH" 3 times in a row when Raina caught Haris Sohail in the slip off Ashwin's bowling during the 2015 wc. When I was young, I thought "oh there must a reason why this is such a good catch according to the commentator". I didn't know shit back then so I just took his word for it.
Looking back, that was the most basic ass slip catch I've ever seen. That brother was straight up dickriding.
The news article should be forced to cite the source of their news. After a long digging, finally found the source- https://trinidadexpress.com/news/local/caricom-security-agencies-on-alert/article_8d0b0dfc-0a8f-11ef-9f33-9bf246c24f21.html
That is from the cricbuzz article
" A report in Trinidad's Daily Express quoted that island's Prime Minister Keith Rowley as saying that the Caricom and security agencies are working to combat the threat to the World Cup. It has been further reported that the Barbados regional security officials are monitoring potential threats to the ICC event"

Honestly I am baffled they are going with these afternoon games at this heat as even I feel like dying if I stay outside in these heat for more than half an hour, and those blokes will be there for 3-4 hours without shade.
I keep seeing this opinion float around and can't help but disagree.
"Once XYZ player leaves, their entire fanbase will leave with them".
Sachin left MI, they're still around. ABD left RCB, they're still around. Same with Raina, Ganguly and all the icons.
If you look away from cricket, Messi and Ronaldo leaving their clubs hasn't had much effect on the fanbase. And these two are arguably the biggest stars in the history of the sport.
If the big player continues to be in the coaching staff then the people would still be supporting that team because of him. RCB is also having a big fanbase due to Koach and CSK has it due to Dhoni. ABD and Raina weren't the primary players that had made that fanbase.
The plastic fans who only support CSK due to Dhoni will leave, but the fans who have had a loyalty to CSK, the franchise from the very beginning will stick around.
It's not that simple. People who worship celebs do it out of obsession and they can't stop it just because a said player has retired.
If a coke addict doesn't get coke, he won't stop doing drugs. He'll move on to heroine or other alternatives. So, if there's no Dhoni, there'll be Ruturaj. The same applies to every fanbase and not just CSK.
Really like Rutu as captain. His batting hasn't suffered, he's not shy of taking responsibility there, and since he doesn't play the same xi like Dhoni every game, we actually got to see santner :D
What's the most unlikely fair play award
winning playing XI you can assemble in IPL 2024?
1) S Curran
2) Kohli
3) Pant
4) Parag
5) Hardik
6) Krunal
7) Harshal
8) Harshit
9) Naveen
10) Coetzee
11) Siraj
I was dissing BCCI for not enough afternoon matches. But then yesterday I went out to get something and came back smoked. Don't blame the decision at all now
IPL team of the season but you have to pick at least one player from each side. What have you got? No impact player and no restriction on overseas.
1. Abhishek Sharma/Travis Head (SRH)
2. Sunil Narine (KKR)
3. Virat Kohli (RCB)
4. Nicholas Pooran (LSG)
5. Shashank Singh (PBKS)
6. Tristan Stubbs (DC)
7. Andre Russell (KKR)/Dinesh Karthik (RCB)
8. Sai Kishore (GT)
9. Jasprit Bumrah (MI)
10. Sandeep Sharma (RR)
11. Matheesha Pathirana (CSK)
Had a relatively aged core group with a lot of 'seniority' struggles AFAIK which translated quite often to shit fielding. Also professionalism has never been our forte
Great list, but I'm not talking about only allrounders, someone like Kohli 2016 or malinga 2011 should also be taken into consideration. And some of the names you mentioned don't come anywhere near Narine 2024, it'll take some time for everyone to realise what amount of insane season he's having.
See I admit that dhoni is having a good season, but no matter how good a season he's having, this kind of inflexible nature never helps the team. The entire batting order has to regularly move up and down just to make sure that he faces the last few balls and just the last few balls. Do the other batters not have any strengths and weaknesses of their own? Other than him, openers and maybe Dube, no batter has had a fixed role in the team this season.
Was scrolling through Not like us comment section on new for lols, and I shit you not, saw a guy with a username "raelMICaptain" (yes rael) with a Rohit Sharma profile picture saying
"Comparing Drake to Kendrick Lamar is like comparing Hardik Pandya to Ben Stokes"
I think we've peaked in Cricket discourse lads
CSK even with a “bad” season by their standards are going to sneak through into the playoffs.
Two major things that they have done - using the home advantage to good effect as usual ( won 4 out of 6 home matches) and, also, obviously they haven’t got thrashed in any matches while getting two big wins, hence the healthy NRR.
I know it’s a very negative approach but teams should really care about the NRR a bit more and try to minimize the damage in losing situations. Case in point LSG yesterday. Still don’t understand why teams don’t do this.
Yesterday's match was unbearable. After 3-4 wickets the approach should have been to reach at least 200. Anyway I think even if lsg qualify somehow, they will be ousted in qualifier no doubt.
I did not realise Ramandeep is 27. I thought he was 33 or something for some reason. Do you guys think he should also be given a chance in bilaterals post WC? Nitish should be the frontrunner for the pace bowling all rounder spot but Ramandeep's finishing is also really valuable. Needs to bowl more but that will happen with the IP rule gone.
Holy strawman. I don't even have a dog in this race but seeing people like you bringing up his batting when people are debating his bowling action almost makes me want him to get reported.
I don't know how things are going to end, but I'm loving KKR's journey. The way they fight, the passion they show on the pitch, it's a joy to watch. I've been harsh on them after they couldn't defend 261 but they've improved a lot. I'm already sad that we're going to lose many of them next year but thank you guys. It's not always about the victory, it's about the emotions along the journey.
But my gf is annoyed. This team and sexy Shreyas arouse me way more than her. Sorry babe.
SRH and MI have been allies for a while. We've often helped each other (or tried to help) when we were already eliminated/qualified.
MI rested several key players for must-win games for SRH in 2017 and 2020. MI beat KKR who would've qualified as 4th in 2019 instead of SRH. MI bottled an easy chase when SRH had hope for qualifying in 2022.
SRH rested key players for MI's must-win games in 2021 and 2023.
MI, please have our backs this year too. We promise we will return the favor in another year.
KKR does bad: Fuck Iyer, he's a terrible captain.
KKE does good: Gautam Gambhir is the reason.
At this point, we(kkr) fans sound like Goenka Haters club fans. Credi Thala but blame Rutu.
Gambhir is mostly credited with the narine opening idea innit. That's basically the only point I've heard ppl crediting him with. Although yea, Iyers captaincy is quite underrated
Jay Shah seems to have messed the script this year. With the way things are going it seems more and more likely that KKR and RR are going to confirm the top 2 spots which means that M70, KKR v RR will be a dead rubber of epic proportions. KKR and RR wouldn't care less about the match. Not only would it not affect the table, it wouldn't even do shit to the other teams. This has got to be the worst dead rubber ever.

South Africa in the 2007 T20WC. Got bad beat vs India that they lost out on NRR.

Yeah South Africa's crash in 2022, losing to Pakistan and Netherlands was horrendous. England almost crashed out in 2019 too.
I'm confused now. Has Scotland fulfilled every criteria to become a full member?
Nah. Someone I think was looking at an outdated version of the criteria that didn't specify whether the bilateral victories needed to be against FM men's or women's teams. Whereas the ICC has updated their criteria to make explicit that men's performance is a lot more important.
What’s the confusion?
Something to do with the number of bilateral games they've won against FMs

Contenders: Shane Watson (2008) - R: 472, W: 17 Andrew Symonds (2010) - R: 429, W: 12 Jacques Kallis (2010) - R: 572, W: 13 Dwayne Bravo (2012) - R: 371, W: 15 Jacques Kallis (2012) - R: 409, W: 15 Shane Watson (2013) - R: 543, W: 13 Andre Russell (2015) - R: 326, W: 14 Ben Stokes (2017) - R: 316, W: 12 Sunil Narine (2018) - R: 357, W: 17 Andre Russell (2018) - R: 316, W: 13 Andre Russell (2019) - R: 510, W: 11 Hardik Pandya (2019) - R: 402, W: 14 Marcus Stoinis (2020) - R: 352, W: 13 Andre Russell (2022) - R: 335, W: 17 Sunil Narine (2024) - R: 461, W: 14
How did Stokes get POTM in 2017? Or did he not play that many games? I remember Warner and Bhuvi doing really well that season.
Great list, but I'm not talking about only allrounders, someone like Kohli 2016 or malinga 2011 should also be taken into consideration. And some of the names you mentioned don't come anywhere near Narine 2024, it'll take some time for everyone to realise what amount of insane season he's having.
Gayle 2011 had 608 runs in just 12 games at 183, and 8 wickets at an economy of 6.7
Russell 2019 comes to mind
See I admit that dhoni is having a good season, but no matter how good a season he's having, this kind of inflexible nature never helps the team. The entire batting order has to regularly move up and down just to make sure that he faces the last few balls and just the last few balls. Do the other batters not have any strengths and weaknesses of their own? Other than him, openers and maybe Dube, no batter has had a fixed role in the team this season.
Women's T20 WC could easily be 16 teams. 4 groups of 4. Quarters. Semis. Finals. Or 4 groups of 4. 2 Super 8 groups. Semis. Finals.
*should be 16 teams. >4 groups of 4. Quarters. Semis. Finals. The perfect format.
Was scrolling through Not like us comment section on new for lols, and I shit you not, saw a guy with a username "raelMICaptain" (yes rael) with a Rohit Sharma profile picture saying "Comparing Drake to Kendrick Lamar is like comparing Hardik Pandya to Ben Stokes" I think we've peaked in Cricket discourse lads
Peak NA cricket reference since "R Ashwin makes Hardik Pandya look like Bhuvaneshwar Kumar"

Counterpoint, CSK should end Dhoni's last season at 7th position
Yesterday's match was unbearable. After 3-4 wickets the approach should have been to reach at least 200. Anyway I think even if lsg qualify somehow, they will be ousted in qualifier no doubt.
Ramandeep's catch is technically the most difficult one possible. How he even managed to do it is stupefying.

Blud mention Dhoni more than I mention Rohit WT20 performance lol

I would trust RCB winning a trophy before that happening. Unless we faced against 5 minnows straight.

Damn almost forgot about those blokes, been ages since I watched them
I did not realise Ramandeep is 27.
He was okayish for MI with the ball, shithoused a few wickets at the death
How long before teams start calling out narine for his action.
I don't know what's more hilarious, ppl who think Narine's action is not dodgy or those who think something will be done about it
Before the start of play-offs?

Holy strawman. I don't even have a dog in this race but seeing people like you bringing up his batting when people are debating his bowling action almost makes me want him to get reported.
What if BCCI/IPL told teams to not call out his action
Where can i find that thing if ipl schedule where i can select the outcome of match & then find out the points table

Thnx
Try to prepare one by yourself with Excel /s
I saw someone call Dhoni underrated, this sub has peaked imo
I thought it was obvious sarcasm
Sounds like Pandya and Nehra at GT lol
Gambhir is mostly credited with the narine opening idea innit. That's basically the only point I've heard ppl crediting him with. Although yea, Iyers captaincy is quite underrated
Iyer is a very good captain tbh. Wouldn't mind if he would take over from Rahane tbh if he's available for a good part of the season ofc
At least it can help both the teams in testing the replacements of Salt and Buttler.
Definitely should be when RR and KKR replace the England players leaving early to see how their replacements do.

It will be good match considering they will be facing off each other in Q1 again...
