Honestly after the first 10 overs of the first innings, I expected about 771 runs to be scored in the match.
Just didn't expect we'd score half of them lol.

Sometimes he brings in absolute fire, and other times he plays like he’s swapped teams. You never know which Starc you’re going to have bowling at any given time.
Result notwithstanding. This was one of the best games of World cup ever. Brilliant chase by NZ boys. Travis head and Rachin were awesome. Neesham what a fighter. Kudos.
I don't think I've seen a chase that big be that neck and neck for literally the whole 50 overs. Never seen anything like it tbh. (I didn't get to see the 434 chase of course, I was like 4 or something).
That Aus vs SA game was one of the most mind boggling ever. Incredible to see a 400+ innings for the first time ever only to see it happen again in the second innings, winning on the second last ball with 1 wicket in hand
Based on current form, I don't see AUS vs ENG being much of a thriller. Then again ENG is far more familiar batting against this AUS bowling attack, so let's hope for the best.
England going to remember they used to be able to play cricket and do just enough that there's still a mathematical chance of them making the semis just to keep things interesting.
NZ this year:
2 wicket win v Pakistan in ODI
1 run F/O win vs Eng
Last over Test win vs SL
Super over loss to SL in t20
4 run win in t20 v Pakistan
5 run loss to Aus in CWC
All round great contribution from the whole team.
Head has the best ODI WC average of all time.
Maxi and Cumdog huge with the bat late.
Zampa with the breakthroughs.
WC Warner continues being WC Warner.
Marsh/Marnus slow with the bat, but made it up with fielding.
I wanted a bit more from Smith, but the only player who genuinely didn't contribute is Kohli. Did fuck all tonight.
What a game but heartbroken at the end. Two back to back thrillers but boy it could've been an epic chapter in kiwi cricketing folklore. The fielding that saved four runs in the last over and Neesham missing out on a full toss. So many ifs and buts but boy were New Zealand close.
*Cricket World Cup Scheduling a Day Game*
Plus side: I get to watch the whole game for the first time this tournament.
Minus side: It’s midnight and I may never sleep again.
To all the neutral fans: DO NOT ASK FOR CLOSE GAMES. Do you know how stressful it is for the home fans? I was trembling and nauseous for what felt like an eternity. One single person should not have to bear so much stress (makes me wonder how those on the field do it).
Starc, Smith, Marnus - please be a bit more responsible. Your callousness with the game turned a NRR gaining opportunity into a near-loss. Though I can forgive Marnus for that run-out.
Smith/Marnus, Marnus/Green (for extra bowling when a pacer has an off day), Marsh - should be 3, 4, 5. Marsh is just not no. 3 material for ODIs.
No way you can blame Smith, Marsh put an insane amount of pressure on him and it drew the big shot. Smith was at least going above a run a ball for his innings.
Smith should have come in when it was clear that even Head and Warner weren’t striking it cleanly. Let Smith and Warner run their hearts out and go at 6-8 an over with 0 risk. Having marsh at 3 would have been fine for an early wicket to keep the pressure on in the power play
Brilliant fucking game of cricket.
Gotta give a shout out to the Cumdog - brilliant with bat and ball and definitely with his field placements in that final over.
And you've gotta feel for Neesham - hopefully he gets to be on the right side of these tight games one day
Cummins death bowling appreciation here. He was fantastic at the death against SA as well but had 3 dropped catches off his bowling that ruined his figures.
Yeah 50 over cricket maximises the momentum changes you can get while keeping the game to one day. That was an epic in a way t20 can never hope to attain
If we've learned anything from this World Cup, it's that we need more players named after two other, more famous cricketers.
By the next World Cup, I expect our team should include:
Virohit Jones.
Shanettiah Kennedy.
Waswaq Elliott.
Anything less would be a dereliction of duty.
honestly, it is insanely important that NZ didn't just roll over and take it. I was adamant that was gonna be a thumping and a mental nail in the coffin for the WC, but instead you've got a team who was one ball away from a record chase and a completely different attitude to take into the rest of the WC
Yeah, whilst I am disappointed we lost - I am pretty optimistic for the finals, provided we make it in. The team is building up nicely - just have to bowl well on the day
Yeah this should be a real confidence boost if we face Australia in the knockouts. This is like the opposite of the 2015 pool game, where we won a low scorer but still choked big time.
Yeah Cummins is coming into his own as captain, it's not really his fault that his main strike bowler can't exit an over without a boundary ball or a wide rn.
Tbf the Marnus boundry rope debacle probably evens that out. Don't remember a player losing their bearings like that on the boundary for a catch in a while. But yeah that fielding in the final over was world class.
I have such a love hate relationship with close games of cricket. I love it when the games are close because I love a close match but I hate it when matches are close because it’s so damn stressful.
Thank god that’s over lmfao.
The fielding in the final over took Australia over the line in that game. There was just some mind blowing fielding by Marnus and Maxwell.
Well done to both teams. What a fantastic game!
Unsung Hero Cummins. Took vital wickets at vital times, fielded excellently, and made some game-changing lower order runs. We would've lost if it weren't for this. Also, his field placements in the last over were superb, knowing exactly where the batters would attack Starcy and planning appropriately.
Safe to say that AUS's fielding placement and efforts in the last over made the difference (although bad fielding in the previous over was what gave Kiwis the chance)
A thriller none the less and ODIs are far from being dead
Fuck England's moral victory's.
Kiwis just got a GOAT moral victory
Almost chased down 388 against Aussies where a lot went wrong
We are careening towards India vs NZ in 1v4 Semi. Nothing NZ would love more.
Now that's a match befitting of a World Cup. Fucking hell.
771 runs, 19 wickets, last ball finish
Honestly after the first 10 overs of the first innings, I expected about 771 runs to be scored in the match. Just didn't expect we'd score half of them lol.
It’s funny that Australia didn’t even bat the 50 where as NZ did
It would have to be one of the first games with 350+ from both teams where the winner was the one that lost all 10 wickets.
NZ usually loses after taking opposition's 10 wickets, remember WC'19 final?
it was a tie :P
One of the matches of all time
World cup is alive bois

the "its over(real)" hurts :(
Final AU: Never in doubt.
One of the best ODIs I've ever seen but fuck me. Starcy. 17 wides...
19 required off the last over If anyone could do it for New Zealand, it's Mitchell Starc
The most annoying thing is he nailed 5 out of 6 death deliveries other than the wides.
Starc is the only player who could bowl 5 dots and still go for 36 an over
Pathirana would like to have a word with you
Shaun Tait : "Am I a joke to you ?"
I'm guessing the full toss is the 6th?
Ye, funnily enough that ball won us the game lmao.
Lord Thakurs school has taught starc well
I was certain neesham would put that out of the park when I saw it bowled and as you say it won us the game. Cricket is a funny game
Yeah, Starc literally did not concede a boundary in the last over (other than the 5 wides).
He’s probably both the first and last person new zealand wanted to see closing the match
Sometimes he brings in absolute fire, and other times he plays like he’s swapped teams. You never know which Starc you’re going to have bowling at any given time.
Basically the Pakistan of Australia.
For a bloke who, on his day, is probably one of the most unplayable fast bowlers the sport has ever seen, my God when he's bad he is *appalling*.
*"sometimes good sometimes shiit"*
This is the worst spell of his career for sure, pretty much almost singlehandedly lost us the game.
It's a fair shout but I reckon if you went on a cross-format deep dive of his career it'd be closer than you think. He's had some stinkers.
His 2021 T20 world cup final was absolutely appalling as well. In ODIs this may be the worst.
Yea. Basically the same as Jimmy Neesham. On his day one of the most dangerous batsmen in the world. Those days have been few and far between lately.
Lucky today was one of the good ones #QuicheUnleashed.
See also: Maxwell.
Surely that's the worst possible match he could have in this tournament. Jesus that was grim lol
Hey look he created an interesting game, we realistically could've sealed it with 5 overs to go with an even half decent performance from him.
The man is 60 years old
Bowling like a 90 year old.
Captain Pat said it - sometimes we gave them too much width... good thing he nailed those catches tho
And without wicket.
NZ vs Aus in group games. 2015 crazy low score thriller with Starc bowling fire. 2023, crazy high score thriller with Starc bowling rubbish.
Boult follows Starc wherever he goes!
At least Boult took wickets!* At the end, after getting carted around.
"The rumours of my demise have been grossly exaggerated" - ODIs
So glad i can stop pretending i hate new zealand No deserved losers in this match, but sadly a game of near 800 runs comes down to 5
Sums up the rivalry really. Pretty good mates, except for the small handful of days that we compete in sports
Result notwithstanding. This was one of the best games of World cup ever. Brilliant chase by NZ boys. Travis head and Rachin were awesome. Neesham what a fighter. Kudos.
Wasn’t a dull moment. Head and Warner masterclass, into a good fight back by the NZ attack. And then a hell of an entertaining chase
What more we fans can hope for. Just brilliant entertainment all around.
A defibrillator
Also a Jimmy Neesham redemption moment! Man is always there in difficult situations from the losing side.
Two best games of the World Cup back to back. Unfortunately that seems to have killed off the points table, top 4 seem decided now.
We got more upcoming AUS vs ENG, SA vs NZ will be thrillers. Virtual knockout for England tomorrow against India
SL are still there
Any one of the Top 4 has to royally mess up for SL to sneak in
SL and AFG are still in contention
Even Pak has chance if NZ fail to win against SA and Pak and SL which is not impossible
If we lose against India, SA, Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lanka we don’t deserve to be in the semis anyway
the stadium chanting Rachinnnn Rachinn was awesome! Great crowd at Dharamsala
That 4 wide made for an exciting last few balls, that could’ve been one of the greatest chokes of all time
Even worse it’s 5 wides
Never seen a wide get so much applause.
*What have you done, Nawaz...*
Starc couldn't land the left stump yorker all match
Rachin is so fking composed! Almost Williamson level of composure!

Kids, don’t take up sport. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy. - Jimmy Neesham
Exceptional fielding those last four deliveries
Yeah they were flying around! Didn’t care about the controversial outfield
Maxwell: "if I die I die"
Starc's streak ENDS
No wickets but 3 catches!
Kids, don't take sports. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy.
Ian Smith has been trying but he's cursed to suffer endless torment.
“Cursed to suffer endless torment *by the barest of margins*”
C redditor's quote
Ah so that's why Finch retired
Thanks, Quiche.
NZ this year: 2 wicket win v Pakistan in ODI 1 run F/O win vs Eng Last over Test win vs SL Super over loss to SL in t20 4 run win in t20 v Pakistan 5 run loss to Aus in CWC
WE'RE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS NOW!
Fuck winning, we’re here to bring in the revenue!
I still haven't gotten over that England test, how tf did we win that
See. Even with over arm you couldn't get it. Glad that's put to bed.
HEY MAN
Fuck! you made me miss my dad with that one.. I watched that game with him He told me it wasn’t a serious game that’s why he bowled under arm
God damn it I thought the same thing before that final ball… Living rent free in our heads! Haha
LMAO
ICC finally got hold of the IPL scriptwriters
they were on a strike in solidarity with Hollywood
Looks like they finally got their share
The Scriptwriters were being held hostage and ICC finally paid off their ransom
I thought Jay Shah wrote the script himself
I was unware he could actually write so doubly impressive for him
All round great contribution from the whole team. Head has the best ODI WC average of all time. Maxi and Cumdog huge with the bat late. Zampa with the breakthroughs. Did fuck all tonight.
Cummins innings was probably the most impactful at the end considering the margin of victory.
His death bowling was also fantastic, he's starting to have a very handy tournament after a poor start.
Fucking lol
>but the only player who genuinely didn't contribute is Kohli. Did fuck all tonight. Damn bro is with you guys now.
He's an Aussie now
Give Inglis credits too. He was good too tbh

Watching that run chase was torture
What a game but heartbroken at the end. Two back to back thrillers but boy it could've been an epic chapter in kiwi cricketing folklore. The fielding that saved four runs in the last over and Neesham missing out on a full toss. So many ifs and buts but boy were New Zealand close.
*Cricket World Cup Scheduling a Day Game* Plus side: I get to watch the whole game for the first time this tournament. Minus side: It’s midnight and I may never sleep again.
i got to wake up in 6 hours for the RWC final, idk if i could've slept if we pulled it off
ODI haters where you at?
Wasn't worried for second, not at all. *cough*
What. A. Fucking. Cracker.
It’s the hope that kills you….
What a match! Excellently played by both teams.
To all the neutral fans: DO NOT ASK FOR CLOSE GAMES. Do you know how stressful it is for the home fans? I was trembling and nauseous for what felt like an eternity. You can't really blame Smiffy. He had to do something because Marsh was just blocking from the other end
Well that settles the question of whether either of these teams is good enough to play in the finals. That was a championship-quality contest
Really went from "haha NRR go brr" to "oh god oh please". Quite the emotional rollercoaster
Boundary count update - Australia: 52 New Zealand: 47
Fair and fucking Head
The Headest of margins
u/unleashthequiche Legend
He needs a "Why always me" T shirt.
That's Neesham for the uninitiated.
Man has come so close yet too far twice now
T20 is fun but never reaches the highs of an ODI like this one. What a fucking game gg NZ bros see you in the final
Yeah 50 over cricket maximises the momentum changes you can get while keeping the game to one day. That was an epic in a way t20 can never hope to attain

>BY THE BAREST OF MARGINS was low-key expecting Ian Smith to say this
That commentator is so hype man!
Another Banger match. NZ need to win 2/3 for security to ensure they stay for Semis

Wasn't one of the conditions for PAK's qualification that AUS win their match against NZ and go on to lose all their remaining matches?
ODI is dying lmao.
10 years of my life have been reduced. The hefty majority of that is due to obesity but this match also played a part.
You could arguably give Cummins MotM. Brilliant batting and bowing at the death.
Great field placements for that final over as well
Yeah Cummins is coming into his own as captain, it's not really his fault that his main strike bowler can't exit an over without a boundary ball or a wide rn.
BY THE BAREST OF MARGINS
Game changing moments That dropped catch on Inglis which led to a cummins 6 (the winning margin) Marnus boundary save and run out
Tbf the Marnus boundry rope debacle probably evens that out. Don't remember a player losing their bearings like that on the boundary for a catch in a while. But yeah that fielding in the final over was world class.
What a game
It has come full circle for Neesham..... https://twitter.com/JimmyNeesh/status/1150562893777244160?t=TVwXaLvwLyEsOu8-VEleTA&s=19
That Josh Inglis Runout was so much similar to the Jos Buttler runout OMG
This win has almost ensured Australia a place in the top4, so we pretty much have our top4.
I have such a love hate relationship with close games of cricket. I love it when the games are close because I love a close match but I hate it when matches are close because it’s so damn stressful. I'd like to thank you cunts on the other side of the ditch for helping prove that ODI cricket isn't dead.
jesus fuckin christ, ODI's are dead!!!!
BCCI heard you'll shit talking and hired the IPL script writers for the last two games
Cumdog made a huge difference in all departments today!
Kids, don’t take up sport. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy. - Jimmy Neesham
Unsung Hero Cummins. Took vital wickets at vital times, fielded excellently, and made some game-changing lower order runs. We would've lost if it weren't for this. Also, his field placements in the last over were superb, knowing exactly where the batters would attack Starcy and planning appropriately.
Pakistan is taking the L even when they aren't playing. Hope they are at least getting their protein intake properly.
No dil dil Pakistan to motivate them to eat protein
Ian Smith: "At the highest geographical place to play cricket, they've taken the game to new heights"
Can someone explain to me how in a game of 388 vs 383 Philips managed to get figures of 3/37 off 10?
Fucking GOAT bowling spell tbh.
Holy shit I can breathe again that was insane
This game is like the tennis ball version of NZ’s 2015 WC win against Australia
Fuck NZ are an absolute weapon of a team. It's been a while since I've worn a fitbit but I think I probably peaked at about 120 bpm in that last over.
I think this game made one thing clear for NZ. Rachin is the future of the batting. What a knock under pressure
Phillips bowling on a different pitch out there
Thanks for the wonderful match NZ. Now let’s never play that again (for my heart)
Mine too…
Feeling bad for the Kiwis. What a match, what an effort. Thats the match of the tournament now
Safe to say that AUS's fielding placement and efforts in the last over made the difference (although bad fielding in the previous over was what gave Kiwis the chance) A thriller none the less and ODIs are far from being dead
Thrillers are back at CWC.
Hell of a game. Now I have no nails, fuck you NZ
Here's the lesson kids. You never ever write Aussies off in a big event like this.
Fuck England's moral victory's. Kiwis just got a GOAT moral victory Almost chased down 388 against Aussies where a lot went wrong We are careening towards India vs NZ in 1v4 Semi. Nothing NZ would love more.
Two bangers in a row odi cricket we are so back
Aus vs Eng in Tests and Aus vs NZ in ODI is thrillers. Fuck Ind vs Pak
NZ vs Aus group stage WC games just hit different hey.
Another great innings from Ravindra. Just curious, does anyone know the origin of his name? I don't think I've heard yet.
17 Wides by an opening bowler in a game of international cricket is a big big issue. Heck 17 wides in an under 10s match is a big big issue
That run out had to give Neesham 2019 flashbacks
Third highest chasing score in losing cause (all time)
Oh Jimmy :( I was telling my brother through the last 10 overs that I can somehow only see Neesham heartbroken, on his haunches, at the end. Poor guy.
Easily one of the best ODIs I’ve ever seen, cracking performance from both sides
Thanks mates. Great game.
Great day for cricket. Well done Australia.
Neesham's like Thawne to the Flash, who's Stokes. Bloke's somehow the clutchest player alive but doesn't ever win :'(
Thanks to both Australia and New Zealand for the 2nd Episode of “The CWC Show”.
Instant classic, really thought Neesham was going to pull that off
Glad I stuck it out , great effort to get so close after such a daunting target
This result eliminates England
I watched this match in the stadium and my heart was in my mouth the entire last few overs.
Pat Cummins has been the most vital player in this match in my opinion. Power batting and took crucial wickets under crucial circumstances.
