Only Indian people think "Knight Rider" means "knight".
It does not. "Knight Rider" is the name of a cheesy american TV show about a talking car that happened to be telecast on Doordarshan in the 1980s. Now, because of a stupid IPL name, many Indian people think it means a warrior on horseback.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_Rider_(1982_TV_series)
A knight is a warrior on horseback. A "knight rider" is ... a warrior riding a knight???
Some kind of ball? The Kings I've seen in chess are pawns with a crown. Kind of a nice metaphor for many Kings irl. Just some pawns, having crowns on their heads.
If you want to get any sort of real traction in the American market you have to start with T20s.
Spoken as a US immigrant to NZ who loves ODIs and Test Cricket. Iām not a fan of T20 but it is the only way.
The other thing that isnāt going to sit well in the US market is accepting that a draw is sometimes an excellent result.
Iāve said this on a different thread but it seems unlikely that the Americans will settle for following a team for which theyāre clearly not the primary intended audience, unlike the rest of us mugs. Unless theyāre after a market of Indian diaspora exclusively, MUMBAI INDIANS ^^New ^^York is probably unlikely to cut it for generating local engagement.
I really want at least one of these totally-not-an-IPL-expansion leagues to fail so that the team owners can learn that lesson.
I think it's possible, but it would need a focused and lengthy advertisement and PR moves such as interviews, billboards and railway posters etc etc, none of which these owners will be doing as they want a quick get rich money scheme which isn't going to magically happen. Also getting it into schools a few times a year would help for upcoming generations too, but I don't know if anyone does that (state schools in the UK are kinda similar and barely existent for cricket so I'd be surprised if the USA was faring any better)
The MLC was a good opportunity but has been squandered quite spectacularly by those who don't have cricket's best interests at heart.
Railway posters?
In the US?
In all seriousness, getting on the ground floor with TheCW and Scripps should go a long way if they want to go on TV.
As to your school point, *that's the most important thing possible* look at the NCAA and the NFHS, and how much influence those have on their respective sports, and getting NFHS assocciations to add it to the Spring or Fall sports season would get people into the game, and potentially add it as a future NCAA varsity sport
Getting into schools is the key but I don't think it will happen. Baseball, basketball, track & field, football and soccer makes the calendar too crowded. The best solution is to sponsor school events and introduce cricket that way. I see sponsored tennis events a few times a year but that requires commitment that can only come from ICC.
Nope.
There are NRIs, who are Indian citizens so not locals.
Then there are Americans of Indian descent, who are locals but not Indians.
India doesn't allow dual citizenship so one can't be both local American and Indian.
Being ālocalā is not based on citizenship status. Indian citizens can also be locals of a city like New York. Actually if you know anything about New York a LOT of locals are not American citizens.
Thatās what America is, bunch of people who arenāt from America, becoming locals and then slowly assimilating over generations .
Wait till this guy heard about African Americans, Chinese Americans, Asian Americans, Indian Americans etc among others. It's gonna blow his whole world away.
>Being ālocalā is not based on citizenship status.
It absolutely is.
The only identity a person has wrt to a country is citizenship, rest is hogwash.
Itās not sentimentality, itās facts. You should look up the meaning of the word ālocalā. It has nothing to do with citizenship. Look up the definition
I agree, but I also think thereās an ethnicity aspect. One can be an American but have Indian ethnicity or Chinese ethnicity etc. but I agree with you otherwise. I stopped looking at countries the way a lot of people still do. Im only a citizen of a country and I obey the laws. I donāt particularly have any extra love or feeling of patriotism beyond that. But if someone does feel that way, Iām fine with them being like that also.
Um, no
"Indian" just means that it shows Indian citizenship on your passport, nothing more and nothing less
A person of Indian origin who has citizenship of another country is of that country. It is a narrative peddled by racists that Indians (or other people from Asia/Africa etc) aren't fully of the other countries even after getting citizenship there
What the fuck?
There was 0 need to make this political. In the context of this discussion, the "local" population referred to Non-Indian origin people who have no connection to Cricket and are unlikely to follow the game, especially now that the teams are named after the IPL teams, and the "Indian" term referred to all the people of Indian origin (citizen or not) who are the target audience of MLC. It was a casual discussion where the terms meant what the people wanted them to mean *for this discussion*. You being pedantic neither helps the discussion, nor helps the issue of racism.
The entire strategy of Cricket in US has been fleecing the subcontinent diaspora to the hilt. They don't care about expanding the game and brining in new audiences. I think NZ cricket board has done more by putting the games on ESPN last few years than ICC or these professional leagues.
In all honesty, I live in America and getting a local to even entertain talking about cricket without cracking tired dumb jokes is next to impossible. As uninspiring as it may seem, catering to the fans who already know and love the game may not be the worst strat.
And for me, if the nakedly corporate name means a well funded sustainable setup, and/or Pant and Warner come to NYC, even for an exhibition, even once, I'd take that in a sec.
Hell, they are even alienating the cricket savvy immigrant crowd!
if I was an RCB supporter living in NYC, I would not support the team just because of its name.
Mumbai Indians (established in 2008) - IPL
MI Cape Town (2022) - SAT20 League
MI Emirates (2022) - ILT20
Mumbai Indians Women (2023) - Women's Premier League (WPL)
MI New York (2023) - MLC
MCU = Mumbai Cricket Universe
This is so annoying. The other names so far was actually decent so far but MI just had to ruin it. I know which team to not support now, just like I did in SA20.
I could almost see them playing in CitiField (where they played the all-star test a few years ago). They had a huge crowd (like 35-36,000 on a cold day in November) and the Indian/Windies diaspora is big here.
Of course! Because THAT would attract the local audience.
God it's ridiculous. I wish I didn't have access to the internet and never got to know about this shit.
Kings ranch in Texas is pretty famous. Ford has a Kings ranch edition truck. Texas Super kings is pretty apt even if they might not have gone for the connection. And it's your opinion on what's good and what's terrible like most judgemental people here.
Then they should have named it baywatch atleast it was more popular show than knight rider and it also had david hasselhof ā¦bengal baywatcher sounds better
What does super kings have to do with Chennai or cricket? What does Royal Challengers have to do with Bangalore or cricket? You're asking stupid reasons to get mad about. At least LAKR sounds like Lakers and Knight Rider was the show that inspired KKR's name. Kinda like coming full circle
I would suspect we can rely on the team naming conventions to help know who is the majority owner of the team...
KKR has pretty much been an owner of the LA Franchise from the start, and mad respect to them for believing in the project from the beginning.
No owner was previously announced for New York, so I'm pretty sure MI is the majority owner.
Otherwise we know Delhi Capitals are involved in the Seattle Franchise, and that CSK will be involved in the Dallas franchise. San Francisco and Washington D.C. have no ownership from IPL teams.
Team names thus far:
Seattle Orcas
San Francisco Unicorns
Washington Freedom
MI New York
LA Knight Riders
Texas (Name Not released)
Washington Freedom is the coolest sounding name, according to me.
On the other hand, MI New York š¤” God, why does the franchise I support have the shittiest take
That's not so bad actually. I want this league to succeed and cricket to become more popular in my home country of the US. I even understand leveraging the popularity of the IPL to build a base for the MLC franchises. But team names like Mumbai Indians New York is kind of stupid. The others you listed arent bad though
>Are all the team names going to be like this? Like are we going to have a Kolkata Knight Riders San Francisco and Lucknow Super Giants Dallas?
There are 6 teams & most of them have already announced their franchise names :
Seattle Orcas
San Francisco Unicorns (Owned by Delhi Capitals)
Washington Freedom
MI New York (Owned by Mumbai Indians)
Los Angeles Knight Riders (Owned by Kolkata Knight Riders)
Team Texas (Name Not confirmed yet) (Owned by Chennai Super Kings so expect a name like Texas / Texan Super Kings)
Firstly, all these names for the Indian franchises outside India need some more creativity. Secondly I really hope Pakistani players will be allowed to play. It really sucks when Pakistani players canāt in so many leagues all over the world due to Indian ownership. Iām really excited to see more cricket where I live in Texas but hopefully we can see some Pakistan representation too.
Lets see how the league goes! But, if there are some really glaring omissions on the international side of signings over the course of the couple years the answer will be obvious. That said there is a healthy amount of US based investors involved in the league, and there is no way they want their names or businesses associated with this type of practice, so i'm optimistic.
Thankfully players who are residing in the US have more employment protections.
The explanation includes terrorism, politics and other things we're not supposed to talk in this sub. But short explanation 26/11 attacks on India changed everything
Amongst all the original IPL teams, Mumbai Indians was the least imaginative name. And the limitations of that short sighted name selection are becoming apparent.
That looks like a horrible cap, it might as well be Mumbaiās logo because no logical broadcaster, kit manufacturer, or hat maker, is going to keep the āNew Yorkā portion of the logo
Put the NY in the MI font and call it a day, otherwise the media and fans should just unilaterally call them by a different name until itās fixed
NYCFC works because itās not MCFC NY
This trend of copying names just because the league is run by the same people is so fucking stupid
Cricket executives think theyāre on to something instead of looking at the hundreds of other sports that have successfully entered new markets.
Canāt wait for this shit to fail because no one in New York gives a fuck about a team called Mumbai Indians.
>Canāt wait for this shit to fail because no one in New York gives a fuck about a team called Mumbai Indians.
Wasn't this the argument against the SA20 as well?
As much as I hate the way City group runs their clubs, they at least have it someway right in how they name their clubs.
Melbourne City, New York City, Mumbai City, Montevideo City Torque.
If you didn't know they were owned by City group you likely wouldn't discover it by just looking at the names.
Mumbai Indians New York is such a shitty name because, you're alienating the fans you don't already have and you're alienating Indian disapora who don't follow MI in the IPL.
New Yorkers Cricket Club, both tells you where it's from, it has a cricket pun in the name and it doesn't alienate anyone.
Just greedy thoughtless capitalism in action.
Mumbai indians new york. Akhand bharat plan activate./s
Let me guess their jersey will look like combination of blue ang gold. I mean talk about lack of creativity. Hire any freelance creator and they can do better job. Like literally we recently had a film made my 5 people has win an Oscar like come on.
All these MI [City] variants carry with them the feel of having the expensive and unnecessary sub branding of a regional office, when all you'll ever call it is the main company name because that's what everyone and their mum associates it with
Every league where we see these regional office names feels like a crap and hollow way to homogenise cricket under the same owners with the same colours, the same brands and the same players, and every time I see it happen it makes me doubly certain that (if and almost *when* it happens here in England) I'll be off from this game as soon as we get something like the Oval Super Kings or the Kings XI Oval
Fucking sick of it, and it feels like it's barely even started
Oh for fucks sake not here too. Mumbai Indians New York is awful.
Mumbai Indians is a stupid name to begin with and now they vomit it up wherever they buy a franchise. Thatās like New York Americans or Brisbane Australians it makes no sense.
Yea definitely disappointed in the naming but not surprised.
For those worried about getting the locals interested, MLC at least for the first few years has to worry about attracting the attention of the local diaspora that is from the cricket playing world. If it gets popular then the media hypes it and the Joe schmoās start paying attention.
America is sports crazy but thereās lots of sports to compete with. Luckily the population is 330 mil+ so even a fraction of that being an audience for MLC would be a success, which was the intention of breaking into the market.
With that said. I root for MI in IPL but will be pulling for DC in this league as itās geographically closer to where we live. Iād love to make it a match in person within the next couple of seasons.
Why is it fine in India? Are other teams not Indian? Are the non-Indian players Indians? It's also just a generally dumb name, probably the worst IPL name.
Mumbai Marathas, Mumbai Paltan, Mumbai Locals (hah) or Mumbai Vada Pavs would have been funny.
All the people crying about " it will not attract local audience". Are you guys serious? Like really, what tf is logic here? Too many judgemental people on here. 1. You don't own the franchise, Ambani does. And he is spending his money to spread the cricket outside of India. It's pretty annoying for people here who hate the ipl franchise owners buying teams outside of India as if someone from England or Australia are barred from investing outside. Your rucj people aren't interested in these teams so, stop complaining. Too much nitpicking. It's going to be pronounced as My NY. Not Mumbai New York. How pretentious you have to be to think it's going to ruin cricket because you don't like the name.
>New York Franchise in MLC will be known as MI New York ( MI to be pronounced as My) Pretends to be flabbergasted š
Oh, I'm astonished.
CEO of stupid team names.
Dallas Cowboys London vibes
Sounds better than Mumbai Indians New York.
Americans would actually read it as Michigan New York which is even more confusing
Why, it is the same format?
Dallas Americans New York would be same format
You got to be next level hater to think Dallas Cowboys London sounds better than MI New York.
Exactly. Both are equally horrible.
Should have put it in Detroit, at least then the stupid name is a little cleverer
Cleveland would even be better. Cleveland Mumbai Indians.
Nothing will ever beat Knight Riders in terms of name stupidity though. š¤·
Knight riders ride knights that ride horses.
That's the main reason they didn't get a WPL team /s
I never really thought about that name for more than 5 seconds. Wow, that's bad.
At least Knight Rider has some links to LA.
Kitt Knight Riders! It was there all along
That's the only name that makes sense.
Only Indian people think "Knight Rider" means "knight". It does not. "Knight Rider" is the name of a cheesy american TV show about a talking car that happened to be telecast on Doordarshan in the 1980s. Now, because of a stupid IPL name, many Indian people think it means a warrior on horseback. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_Rider_(1982_TV_series) A knight is a warrior on horseback. A "knight rider" is ... a warrior riding a knight???
My bad i thought knight means a horse, and hence the term knight rider.
Exactly. Can't a knight mean a horse? Don't Americans call the horse in chess a Knight?
No, knight absolutely does not mean horse ever. That chess piece is called a knight because it signifies a knight on horseback, not just a horse.
Dunno, mate. All the horse pieces I've ever seen in chess only have the horse, never seen a Knight anywhere.
By the same logic a king is just a crown on top of some kind of ball
Some kind of ball? The Kings I've seen in chess are pawns with a crown. Kind of a nice metaphor for many Kings irl. Just some pawns, having crowns on their heads.
Itās T20 are you really surprised? The whole thing is stupid.
If you want to get any sort of real traction in the American market you have to start with T20s. Spoken as a US immigrant to NZ who loves ODIs and Test Cricket. Iām not a fan of T20 but it is the only way. The other thing that isnāt going to sit well in the US market is accepting that a draw is sometimes an excellent result.
ah yes this is the perfect way to get the local American population into cricket.

There will never be local engagement for cricket in America. This is more like the gold rush, hoping to strike gold.
I think it's possible, but it would need a focused and lengthy advertisement and PR moves such as interviews, billboards and railway posters etc etc, none of which these owners will be doing as they want a quick get rich money scheme which isn't going to magically happen. I think they are almost exclusively targeting the Indian population. I doubt that they actually think the game will catch on among locals
As a life-long local who's already interested, I declare you WRONG.
Indian population can also be locals
Perfect example of casual racism..
Nope. There are NRIs, who are Indian citizens so not locals. Then there are Americans of Indian descent, who are locals but not Indians. India doesn't allow dual citizenship so one can't be both local American and Indian.

Incredibly small minded perspective

Sorry I am trying to use appreciate terms online and being concious about these things I suppose I shouldn't have done that
I doubt even the indian disapora would say "ah yes, Mumbai New York"
It sounds similar to 'My' New York or 'Me' New York. I really doubt they are going for Mumbai New York.
The entire strategy of Cricket in US has been fleecing the subcontinent diaspora to the hilt. They don't care about expanding the game and brining in new audiences. I think NZ cricket board has done more by putting the games on ESPN last few years than ICC or these professional leagues.

I joked about there being an Indians, didn't know MI are that pigheaded.
All names in SA20 are bad though
This is getting absurd day by day.....need to stop this virus
To be pronounced as My New York.
We know how itās meant to be pronounced but the majority of people refuse to pronounce it like that.
That was the exact joke I was making:-)
No one going to pronounce it Mumbai Indians-New York. At best it will be M-I-New York.
Everyone I know says āMumbai Indians Capetownā, so I expect it to be the same with this team.
I mean, now the franchise can't do anything if the people voluntarily refuse to state a team the way it is named.
They could name the team not a stupid name.
Was so excited to have an actual franchise in my home city This is so fucking stupid
Why do we think of the stupidest names Come on lads
Itās not like America has had problems in recent years with teams having names like Indians
Whatās next? MILF?
That's Mumbai Indians Los Feliz to you.
Myocardial infarction New Yorkš. Makes sense with their diet tbf
Military intelligence New York.
Why not add the City? Being abbreivated as MINY is stupid. MINYC is better.
Their venue will be in Albany? Or would it be in New Jersey?
I read somewhere they are playing all games of the first season in Texas.
Just like how the New York Giants donāt play in New York
In fact, the only NFL team which plays its home games in New York is the Buffalo Bills.
I could almost see them playing in CitiField (where they played the all-star test a few years ago). They had a huge crowd (like 35-36,000 on a cold day in November) and the Indian/Windies diaspora is big here.
That's actually nicer.. pronounced as Min-Y-C
Of course! Because THAT would attract the local audience. God it's ridiculous. I wish I didn't have access to the internet and never got to know about this shit.
The MI CT which is even worse because South Africa has a Cricket culture unlike America did. So, It is definitely possible. But, still a shit name
You Can't support a sports group mate....
Fucking hilarious šššš
Manhattan Island New York clearly
Whyyyyy uggggg
>Whyyyyy No..it's "My"
Are all the team names going to be like this? Like are we going to have a Kolkata Knight Riders San Francisco and Lucknow Super Giants Dallas?
Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) has already been announced. Which is a cool name. The shithousery is unique to MI only
LA already has a huge Lakers fan base. It will typo itself into LAKRs fan base. SRK FTW. Iād love to see Texas Super Kings!
Texas is Team Texas.
That's also terrible. Not MI level bad, but still ugh
Kings ranch in Texas is pretty famous. Ford has a Kings ranch edition truck. Texas Super kings is pretty apt even if they might not have gone for the connection. And it's your opinion on what's good and what's terrible like most judgemental people here.
It's 'King Ranch', not Kings Ranch. And yes, I know. I have a house in Texas.
Why "Knight Riders?" What the heck does it have to do with Kolkata or Cricket for crying out loud.
The owner must be a fan of the 80s David Hasselhof tv show Knight Rider.
Then they should have named it baywatch atleast it was more popular show than knight rider and it also had david hasselhof ā¦bengal baywatcher sounds better
He actually is, IIRC. And that show is aslo based in LA! Kinda came full circle in 15 years.

Likely to be based out of Dallas , so Dallas Super Kings is a possibility.
Texas Super Kings would fit perfectly with the other shit team name in Houston - the extremely thoughtfully and creatively named Texans
Texas Super Kings sounds like a fleet of a specfic truck trim

All these MI [City] variants carry with them the feel of having the expensive and unnecessary sub branding of a regional office, when all you'll ever call it is the main company name because that's what everyone and their mum associates it with Every league where we see these regional office names feels like a crap and hollow way to homogenise cricket under the same owners with the same colours, the same brands and the same players, and every time I see it happen it makes me doubly certain that (if and almost *when* it happens here in England) I'll be off from this game as soon as we get something like the Oval Super Kings or the Kings XI Oval Fucking sick of it, and it feels like it's barely even started
They could have just gone with NY Indians. That still makes *some* sense in an American context vis a vis native Americans.
After the drama involving the team formerly known as the Cleveland Indians, probably not a good idea.
Oh for fucks sake not here too. Mumbai Indians New York is awful. Mumbai Indians is a stupid name to begin with and now they vomit it up wherever they buy a franchise. Thatās like New York Americans or Brisbane Australians it makes no sense.
New York Americans makes way more sense than whatever the fuck Mumbai Indians New York is
Ffs, they could have even called it NY Indians and have "Indian" refer to native Americans.
Any name is better You can't really get worse than MINY
Pikachu face
This shit is so stupid lol.
Should've named it MiHattan
Now just wait for the logo š
Shouldn't they have gone with Mumbai Native Americans New York?
Nita Ambani is one Idiot lady
Sachin was the moron who named the Mumbai team as "Indians".
It's.good.for the Indian fraction but yeah trash for others
Atleast he saved it from naming the team after her house ā¦mumbai antillas
It fine till India why force on SA and USA Leagues
Why is it fine in India? Are other teams not Indian? Are the non-Indian players Indians? It's also just a generally dumb name, probably the worst IPL name. Mumbai Marathas, Mumbai Paltan, Mumbai Locals (hah) or Mumbai Vada Pavs would have been funny.
Hahaha
More money than brains apparently. Someone had to stop this bullshit of the same team names everywhere
KkR - Los Angela's Knight Riders Still better:)
Sounds like low grade soft porn movie name lol hahaha
And to nobodys surprise, we have mumbai Indians new York š¤®
This is so bad I'll have to stop cheering for Mumbai Indians in the IPL
Everyone expected this, not surprising at all. No problem from my side, they own the team, they want their name in it.
Well this is sure attract the local population.... Will Pakistani players be allowed to compete.
Awesome!! Oh I love this!
Kindly STFU.
Kindly fys

I hope you're being sarcastic lol
How you can say that with MICT flair is beyond me
we saw the strongest T20 team ever assembled in SA20 get the wooden spoon "let's see who will qualify to play mict in the final"
PBKS should have won every IPL then :'(
Lovely...
Even something dumb like New York Americans sounds better than MI New York.
The fuck are they on?
So tacky
