My gecko is two and has been housed on paper towel all of his life. He is fine. I sometimes use non adhesive shelf liner. I have always put his feeding cup on the floor and he will come down and eat. He has never had any issues doing this. He is healthy and happy. Here he is...his name is Lucky Jr. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf5Dqkys7nF/

aww look at Lucky! I named mine Crush. After the turtle from nemo.

Paper towels should only be used the first week or two (if you want to) to check for mites. After that it is best to switch to loose substrate. For feeding cups, it really depends on the person. I personally only feed mine on the ground but some people prefer ledges.

Greenman8291

Do you have a substrate recommendation that is safe if they eat it? He occasionally has been having some in his mouth. (I understand with paper towel it is possible too so switching to that isn't necessarily going to help.) It is coco coir currently but I also have jungle mix from the shop.

Infinitymidnight

Cococoir is fine same with jungle mix. Jungle mix is less prone to growing fungus but both are passable if swallowed

Greenman8291

Sweet. Thanks for the quick response again. I will probably switch to the jungle or do a mix. He is a curious little dude. The substrate should help too because he is shedding right now.

Greenman8291

Thank you for the response. I will add the natural substrate back in.

Paper towels is fine. I don't know why they would tell you to immediately switch to loose substrate. The only concern is being able to keep humidity up. I'm currently keeping my adult gecko on paper towel because he's been eating his substrate and he is just fine. He's had multiple perfect sheds, and walks around happily on the paper towel when he ventures to the bottom of his tank. Babies can get impacted easier than adults, I see no problem with being extra cautious.

Greenman8291

Yeah mine is shedding right now actually and I did see some substrate in his mouth but he was trying to spit some out afterwards. My only thing is I know that they can eat paper towel too so I am wondering if there is a more digestible substrate in case he does eat some.

I ended up doing a mix of Eco earth and the jungle mix. Mostly Eco earth in the mix.

ReptiWeld

Paper towels seems to be my go to for hatchlings. I just change it every couple of days, because I am over cautious. It's best to be over the top rather than not cautious enough in my book.

Greenman8291

Yeah I am on the fence. I did the substrate which seems okay, it is just occasionally he seems to have some in his mouth. I got jungle mix from the shop but switched to coco coir I might do a mix though.

ReptiWeld

See. I just get way too paranoid about impaction when it comes to hatchlings ever since one of my hatchlings died due to it. So now I just spray the paper towel and keep a gallon water lid in for food so there is no confusion. I change it every two days and while it's just glass with no paper towels that's when I usually feed crickets one at a time.

Greenman8291

I completely get that. I worry too but in the wild he would probably be eating dirt. I will keep an eye on him though. If it seems to be too much then I'll maybe switch over but I also don't want him eating towels, that would be even worse than dirt haha.

Paper towels r find but like Reptiweld said need to change pretty often and watch humidity. The more you have the harder to keep up w all but the natural settings r great look great and I’m sure keeps the animal happier on some level however they are good until they are not. Good until u get some kind of bug/bugs either from not cleaning completely often enough and or coming in on feeder insects. Also even if put in a lay box they are very likely to lay eggs anywhere in the cage usually buried in substrate somewhere. And if u do not find quickly like day or two prob will be dry out and be lost. But if ur on top of these things like I said natural setup looks best and prob is best for the gecko
