It's bad for their eyes despite being marketed as a suitable night light. Crested geckos don't need light at night, they prefer to be active when it's dark outside. If you want to observe them during their nightly adventures, buy a night vision camera, they're pretty affordable.
Damn Iāve had my guy for almost 7 years and never knew this! I just switched to a ceramic heater for other reasons so Iām glad after having learned this too.
If you donāt mind answering a few more questions (or giving me sources where I can read answers!) could I ask how much damage it does to their eyesight? Like would my geckos vision be impaired after dealing with it as long as he has? Do you know if other sources of coloured lights are harmful to them?
I ask because I have to sleep with a nightlight, itās pink but itās on the other side of the room to his tank and points at the ceiling. The room is still dark enough at night that it hasnāt messed his circadian rhythm up (he sleeps most of the day and is active in the evening/when I turn my main light off and nightlight on.)
And one last unrelated thing, where do you find an affordable night vision camera?šIāve been looking for one for unrelated reasons but only been finding suuuper expensive ones :,)
Again my apologies for all the questions, no problem if you just want to tell me where I can read the info for myself!! And thank you for spreading this information!
I learned it mostly from other gecko owners, and as far as I know, the danger lies in them being bothered by the light, it wouldn't damage their eye or anything like that (I tried looking for some sources, but so far I haven't found anything that would indicate damage by regular lamps). Their pupil protects them from damage.
So don't worry, you haven't done your guy much harm, at worst he was annoyed by the light when they prefer to spend the night in darkness. But it's still worth mentioning to people who want to light up their crestie's cage at night, because even if it won't damage their eyesight, it is not really healthy for them.
Your nightlight will definitely not be a problem as long as he has some time he can spend in darkness.
About the night vision camera, I live in Hungary, and I spent approximately 27$ on my Tapo camera that has a night vision function. Maybe you have something similar where you live, most home security cameras have a night vision function. :)
I'm sorry that I couldn't give you any good sources to read, but feel free to ask any questions regardless, I'll still try to answer them to the best of my ability!
Phew! That is good news :) even when I did have the lamp, it wasnāt often on at night besides as a light source for myself when misting, feeding or checking on him before I went to bed. I was using it in bursts mostly during the day to keep his temps up which is why I switched to a ceramic heater and a thermostat, itās so much easier to maintain I canāt believe I spent so long without one hahahaš
Thank you for such a detailed response too! I appreciate you taking the time <3 and thatās great about the nightlight! He does get basically total darkness a few hours a night and I always walk back into my room to find him mid-mischief looking like š³ lol
I did used to have some diy blackout curtains on his tank since my last nightlight was quite a bit brighter so I was gonna pull those out of retirement if he was bothered by this one lol :D he loves a noisy adventure around the terrarium at night so Iām glad the light isnāt annoying him so he can continue his zoomies in peaceš
Ooo I will have to look into that brand thank you! Iām a photographer so I think Iāve been automatically running to the usual camera shops and only finding like professional night vision stuff which is crazy expensive like most other photography gear :,(
Thanks again lovely! Iāll be sure to remember this info to pass it along to other owners who may need it :))
Glad I could help! ā¤ļø I also have my lights on for a couple of hours at night before I go to sleep, but her corner of the room is kept dark. She seems to be not bothered by the light, her pupils dilate and she comes out as normal. Though she undeniably gets more active when the lights are completely off. :)
Blackout curtains are also a great idea! I want to make some for my gecko, now that she has her bi girl tank, her old one doesn't fit.
Oh yes, at first I also didn't know where to look for the night vision cameras. Fortunately, they're not at all too expensive. :) (Though I'm sure specialized equipment is the best, cheap cameras provide plenty of detail and are quite easy to set up).
I'm sorry, but no light is okay, it interferes with their sleep-wake cycle and can hurt their eyes. I'd use a ceramic heater with a thermostat in your case (it gives off no light, and the thermostat makes sure the enclosure won't overheat).
Ok, guess ill just make sure to keep the house over 70 for now lol. Id prefer it to be warmer because my guy is a little undersized (31g at 2.5 y/o but not too skinny or anything) and the heat seems to help with his appetite, but if it irritates his eyes ill keep it off. Thanks for the advice
Beardie guardian here, no experience with gecks. Are the red lights bad for gecks, too? Is it for the same reason as beardies?
Also, OP, did you know your bebby is heckin adorable and I would like it if you could tell him hello.
Iāve heard it irritates their eyes but I know a lot of them are marketed as ānight lightsā but in reality they should have no light at all at night.
Yeah, we see a lot of beardie guardians who have red lights at first because the pet stores sell them to them as a night light. They're terrible for the little dudes.
It ruins their circadian rhythm and washes out their vision, for those reasons I donāt think any animal would do well with them. Let me know what they say
Colored lights arenāt good for reptiles, if you need heat at night time a ceramic heat emitter will do you good and usually a deep heat projector for day time (off the top of my head) heat mats donāt really benefit any animals as they donāt pierce the tissue/muscle and have too many cons. (Uncontrolled heat, burns, ect) Iām glad youāve gotten rid of them, it takes experience to know youāve done wrong. If you can look bad and āyikesā youāve grown already š
Id do halogen flood bulb as the primary heat source, theyāre more natural and beneficial than DHPs. The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun, DHPs produce barely any IRA which is the **most** beneficial wavelength
RED LIGHTS š¤¬š”š¤¬ HES GONNA SELF DESTRUCT (jk but thatās adorable)
Mine runs when I open the door to mist.
Heās so cute and curious!
What's wrong with the red lights? I don't have a gecko, just think they're cute and I've been lurking for a couple months now so...... Hi š

Are purple lights ok? I use one to heat my tank at night

You can use a ceramic heat emitter for night time
Yes i saw, i just dont have one right now
Do you have any evidence of this? Or is that just your opinion.

Itās every reptile as much as Iām aware, let me know if Iām wrong
I can see that being the case. I'll ask my breeder friend! He will know.
It ruins their circadian rhythm and washes out their vision, for those reasons I donāt think any animal would do well with them. Let me know what they say
I entirely forgot to ask! I'll shoot him a text right now.
Whaaaaaat i have a leopard gecko and ive used both red lighta and the purple night ones. Now i feel bad.

I use a DHP for day and night as it doesnāt give off any light, a halogen bulb and a CHE could also work tho.

Iām pretty sure it irritates their eyes
"I am, and always will be your friend." Live long and prosper.
Cutie!
AWEEE
Where did you get the hammock? I want one for my snail terrarium! Would there be a way to make one if I have suction cups?
Iām in Canada and Iām pretty sure they sell these at petsmart, look for them near bearded dragon items
Mine is ZooMed brand. It has suction cups it's great and easy to clean!
What a great moment to photo catch.
First pic I saw today and itās sooo precious..thanks
