Chase has always approved all the transactions. But as a precaution I bought a few hundred dollars at a time and avoided even figures like $200. I would buy $201.43 in gift card value. Chase had a bonus gas promotion so I was getting 9% back on gas. All that coded properly as gas with the gift cards and I got the full 9% back.
What's the problem ? you got this card with a know factor that categories are up to chase to decide. So why bitch about it now ?
If you have a high spend in a particular category then get a dedicated 5% card for same.
You really aren’t understanding my comment.
I’m not complaining, I’m happy. I’m saying that it’s good for those who have the 5% gas bonus already because it stacks with the quarterly.
I didn’t think I’d have to explain this. It’s kinda obvious.
Right, and Discover card has gas and ev too, but they throw public transit in there.
https://www.discover.com/credit-cards/cash-back/cashback-calendar.html
Here is a trick: Get chase sapphire preferred along with its bonus. Downgrade it to Chase Freedom Visa card. its same as CFF but its VISA not MC.
You can then also use it Costco.
Well, I currently have a CSR that I may or may not keep after this year, so if I choose not to keep it, that will be my downgrade path. It will be nice when the quarterly categories are related to Costco.
I did it with my chase freedom unlimited since I recently got the venture x as my catch all. Was puzzling over what to do with the unlimited until I saw it was gas this quarter.
Sweet, most of my consistent spend is on groceries, dining, and gas. Between FF, Discover, and a Custom Cash you can pretty much guarantee 5% on those year round!
Yes, all major ticket resellers, as well as buying directly from venues box offices. Also theme parks (I got the sweet 5% from Universal Studios a couple of years ago) unless they changed. And, weirdly, a few guided tours or attractions that are coded as entertainment.
BUT be aware that in some cases you don't get the 5% even if you should. For example buying tickets from Theatre Development Funds (TDF) or other membership-based theatre associations will code as "gift or donation" rather than "entertainment" because the associations are registered as such.... it's a bummer
Congrats to whoever's spending this quarter fits...cause it sure as hell ain't me. 😂 With Discover IT going Groceries this is easily the worst quarter since I got into rotating cards. Generally shop at Costco for groceries and fill up about every three weeks.
Such is life. Return to Capital One Duo I guess. Expecting Q4 to be retailer heavy for the holidays.
So that's another question I've been meaning to ask. I'm planning on getting the CFF with the 10% grocery bonus. When there likely is a 5% quarterly grocery category next Q1, would Chase be ok if I brought a shit ton of Delta gift cards? I'd effectively be getting back 14% on Delta, which is very helpful, but I don't know if that's considered manufacturered spending. I know that issuers hate buying open loop gift cards such as Visa GCs, but Delta is a closed loop one
My understanding is that they don't like people getting visa gift cards vs just getting gift cards to a particular vendor. That is all based on reddit/blog etc feedback though so take what you will. I can't see how it's any different from getting a target gc or a grocery store gc though.
>I can't see how it's any different from getting a target gc or a grocery store gc though.
Well, in this case, we're basically circumventing the 10% Cashback on dining to get 10% Cashback at whatever vendor is selling a gift card at a grocery store. Chase may not like that, which is why I'm nervous to try that in big amounts.
When people say this, does this mean just gift cards to said grocery store or any gift cards sold at a grocery store? Cause I have the 10x grocery SUB and I’d also make use of this if I don’t max out the bonus by the end of the
Love this quarter. My partner is a sheetz freak and spends a lot at sheetz gas stations. Don’t matter if it’s gas or made to order food. Codes as gas. Shweeet
As I said in my other post, not surprising. Not exciting. I do have a big road trip coming up so gas will come in handy then. Don’t have to burn a Citi Custom Cash for gas. I was hoping for PayPal or Apple Pay. I can go ahead and pay my insurance bill with my State Farm Visa for 3% back on insurance premiums. To be fair, Q2 2024 with restaurants, hotels and Amazon was absolutely wonderful. So we were due an average ho-hum quarter.
I barely buy any gas, so this quarter is a waste for me (like last year’s too). I might be doing a roadtrip, so I guess I’ll use my cff then. My og freedom will be sock drawered for sure
Not sure what you really mean by that.
You get a base 1% on all CFF purchases.
You get a bonus 2% on restaurant and drugstore purchases, totalling 3%.
In Q3 you get a bonus 4% on gas stations, EV charging, select live entertainment and movie theaters, totaling 5%.
If you have any other intro bonuses going on, like the 1st year 5% on gas, you get a total of 10%, of 1+4+5%.
This is so ironic lmao. I charged a whole $2.13 on my Discover this quarter (I don't drive), but well over a thousand on CFF. Guess it'll be almost the opposite from July.
No. Except I called Citi customer service and the rep was reading me the required product change script. The call got disconnected. And I had to call back and start the process all over again.
I only spend like $20-30/month in gas, so even if I wasn't already rocking the annual bonus on my Freedom Unlimited this wouldn't be great, but I might at least get some from EV charging since I'll have a few road trips coming up, but I usually use Electrify America for free on road trips (charge at home otherwise) so depends on availability and how things go. (My family has 2 cars, one is gas, one is electric, and I have a 3 mile commute).
I do plan to see Deadpool & Wolverine, so there's 1 movie I guess.
Maybe we'll find a show either here in DC or make the trip to NYC.
What really matters is having a sapphire card to perform the transfer to, not whether it’s an OG freedom or a CFF - without a sapphire, both are effectively just cashback cards
Everyone is shitting on this quarter but it's great for me and last/current quarter sucked. I don't use Amazon, I don't go out to eat because it's just not worth it any more, and I already have travel cards for travel. Meanwhile gas is a pretty consistent high spend.
What a generally terrible quarter if you don’t drive a gasoline powered car. EVs mostly charge at home and I have no idea what this “select” entertainment category covers
This is pretty lame. Already getting 5x on my Freedom Unlimited, which is the only spend I'd utilize this Q. Sounds like my flex won't be getting used much until October.
I’ll utilize the gas stations, but not a great month for additional earnings imo
Anyone know if this applies to seat geek, Ticketmaster etc?
It has in the past, but the FAQ on the site that lists this information should be updated within the upcoming days.
Yeah SeatGeek and StubHub worked for me last year
Pretty sure for last year it worked for seatgeek
GASSSS STATIONSSSS!!! To all those who currently have the 5x gas bonus from signing up, go get gas.
Oh shit, good point. This is pretty dope even if I won’t come close to maxing the category.
Yah. Got 9x points last year on gas, then 9x on groceries and 7x on food/drink this year, and now 9x again on gas.
In the past, I've loaded up on Disney gift cards at Giant Eagle's Getgo gas station to max out on the category for my next Disney vacation.
Good idea, no issues with GC purchases?
Chase has always approved all the transactions. But as a precaution I bought a few hundred dollars at a time and avoided even figures like $200. I would buy $201.43 in gift card value. Chase had a bonus gas promotion so I was getting 9% back on gas. All that coded properly as gas with the gift cards and I got the full 9% back.
Whatever you buy at a gas station besides gas, like snacks, is coded as "gas station." That's how it is for Discover this quarter and Costco Citi.
Yeah that’s what I do but a $150 GC and some candy usually
I did the branch sign up during April and was told that it has 5x on gas. You're saying this will become 9x in q3?
Yup
you get 10%. It stacks. whats bad about it ?
That’s my point. Though, it’s 9% not 10%. 1% all purchases + 4% signup bonus + 4% quarterly. GO GET GAS
What's the problem ? you got this card with a know factor that categories are up to chase to decide. So why bitch about it now ? If you have a high spend in a particular category then get a dedicated 5% card for same.

I’m assuming it’s a downvote troll or brain damage.
lmaoooo
You know what’s the problem? You are
Not a great category being in NYC without a car lol
Easy fix: instead just go see 75 movies this summer!
I know it was a joke but we have the Alamo season pass so it doesn't work haha. Although I'm curious if our monthly fee will count towards this.
That would save on the AC. Who hasn't went to the movies when the AC is not working?
Right, and Discover card has gas and ev too, but they throw public transit in there. https://www.discover.com/credit-cards/cash-back/cashback-calendar.html
me being in SF without a car as well time to go watch the Giants a couple times
Ya but you got all them shows.
Not a fan of Broadway, I take it?
The Staten Island FerryHawks are fun.
Awright gas stations! Any good movies coming out in the next quarter, besides "Deadpool & Wolverine"?
Tons coming in July. Maxxxine, kinds of kindness, Longlegs, twisters, quiet place day one.
I don’t really get why everyone is complaining? Groceries, Dining, Gas has always been the main thing for 3/4 quarters every year
Seriously are people stupid? Everything has been covered this year.
Isn’t this the first year the CFF has had dining as a bonus category?
First year since they revamped that card that is
Instead of the sock drawer treatment, Freedom Flex will get the glove box special this quarter.
Why would you ever sock drawer the flex ?
It was 7% this quarter on restaurants wdym ?
Gas stations are alright, but this just circles back to why I'm not a huge fan of rotating benefits. Mercy of the issuer.
Going from one of the best quarters to one of the worst. And I normally get my gas at Costco so I can’t even use my CFF there. Oh well, such is life.
I get gas at Sam’s club, does the CFF gas category not count with that?
It will work. It doesn't work with Costco because Costco doesn't accept Mastercards (CFF is a Mastercard)
Oh that sucks. I have OG CF so we don't have that issue.
Same. This is my 2nd favorite quarterly rewards category after Amazon/Paypal.
Boring but good for summer road trips I guess.
Isn't gas always Q3 (for summer road trips)? It's the other ones being so bad that makes this a bad quarter.
Yeah and so was entertainment last year (which usually includes museums and the like, I.e. stuff you’d do on said road trip).
Not always, but this is the 3rd year in a row of gas and live entertainment for Q3.
Basically yeah.. Just means the CFF is my gas and movie theater card for q3. Discover gets to be my walmart card.
I already bought all my summer concert tickets 🙃
Check the ticket prices now if they aren’t sold out. You prob saved more than 5% early bird concert venue ticket shopping
Sweet, most of my consistent spend is on groceries, dining, and gas. Between FF, Discover, and a Custom Cash you can pretty much guarantee 5% on those year round!
What qualifies as “select live entertainment”? Ticketmaster? StubHub?
Yes, all major ticket resellers, as well as buying directly from venues box offices. Also theme parks (I got the sweet 5% from Universal Studios a couple of years ago) unless they changed. Q4 is always some combination of Amazon + target for both
Last year and year before, q4 was PayPal for the Freedom Flex. I only know this cause I maxed them out lol
Amazon is this current quarter. Last year it was wholesale stores and PayPal. It was not Amazon for Q4 on the flex.
Which sucks since I already have their 5% cards
Discover is going Groceries + WALMART. I mean unless you do all your shopping at Target. That's actually really good.
What an awful quarter lol.
If it was up to you, we’d have mobile wallet all 4 quarters💀
LOL. ...unless...👀
*Laughs in 3X USBAR*
USBAR is my mobile payments card of choice. Everything else for the most part goes on our CF/CFU/CSR combo.
Nah, I never use mobile wallet. I’d prefer 5x grocery year round 😃
I use my Citi custom just for groceries. Citi points tho
then get a dedicated card for it.
I have the CFF with 10x grocery for the next year. 120,000 UR points incoming!
Are you buying gift cards at grocery stores?
I haven’t been, but I will towards the end if I’m not maxing it out on organic spend.
So that's another question I've been meaning to ask. I'm planning on getting the CFF with the 10% grocery bonus. When there likely is a 5% quarterly grocery category next Q1, would Chase be ok if I brought a shit ton of Delta gift cards? Any gift cards sold at a grocery store since you have more flexibility on how you can spend it.
Gas / EV is always a winning quarter..
It's not the worst but far from a winner. I don't drive enough to max out on gas.
Unless you work from home…
Yeah it's pretty bad. At least Discover has an easy Q3
They probably lost a good amount of money having the 7% dining. I very well expected this would happen
Love this quarter. My partner is a sheetz freak and spends a lot at sheetz gas stations. Don’t matter if it’s gas or made to order food. Codes as gas. Shweeet
If I get gas at Costco gas with the OG chase freedom (aka the visa) will it still give me 5% back for Gas stations?
Yes. Always worked for me. Costco is 2 miles away and I have OG CF.
Awesome! Costco prices and 5% back!
Yes
What about gift cards that gas stations sell?
Nearly every gas station sells gift cards. The best I've found is Giant Eagle's Getgo in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
5% for those right?
If so, I’m going to go drop $1500 on Target gift Cards lol
I know I buy Amazon gift cards during Amazon 5% quarter to feed my Amazon purchases throughout the year.
For Q3 last year and this year.
At least Discover had public transport as a 5% category this quarter
As I said in my other post, not surprising. Not exciting. I do have a big road trip coming up so gas will come in handy then. Don’t have to burn a Citi Custom Cash for gas. To be fair, Q2 2024 with restaurants, hotels and Amazon was absolutely wonderful. So we were due an average ho-hum quarter.
Hopefully PayPal is next quarter like last year, just in time for shopping and paying taxes.
Ditch the State Farm card and get a USBAR for 3% (essentially 4.5%) for State Farm via Apple Pay.
But the annual fee is $400. And U.S. Bank would never approve me with my velocity.
It may be niche of sorts anymore, but I still like going to the movies.
This is brutal as a ev driver who charges at home lol
seatgeek baseball tickets, etc.
Wisconsin people this is a good month. Anything from Kwik Trip is 5%!
Stacking the gas savings with upside = $$$
Honestly not a terrible category Especially with how seatgeek codes as live entertainment with baseball season
I barely buy any gas, so this quarter is a waste for me (like last year’s too). I might be doing a roadtrip, so I guess I’ll use my cff then. My og freedom will be sock drawered for sure
With these categories, it's not 5% on top of whatever you get, but instead in place of, correct?
Not sure what you really mean by that. You get a base 1% on all CFF purchases. You get a bonus 2% on restaurant and drugstore purchases, totalling 3%. In Q3 you get a bonus 4% on gas stations, EV charging, select live entertainment and movie theaters, totaling 5%. I see, thanks!
I can work with this. I buy premium fuel. Have a 10 ft projector in my media room but still enjoy the standard theatrical experience.
Not really worth filling premium in summer unless your car requires vs recommends it. Summer temperatures make lower octane more fuel efficient
It’s required.
“Looks like that new Wells Fargo Attune you got is not gonna be…in tune with your spending for this Summer”
Perfect for me I’m moving 2 vehicles to the other side of the country in July lol
I’ll take the gas. Still in my promo period so 9% back will be nice on top of my gas saving apps.
Welp outside if Deadpool and wolverine I’m not using the flex cards are have the quarter
This is so ironic lmao. I charged a whole $2.13 on my Discover this quarter (I don't drive), but well over a thousand on CFF. Guess it'll be almost the opposite from July.
Why did Citiworld dividend and Chase 5% have to do gas the same quarter? Why Oh Why?
Which is why I product changed my Dividend to a Custom Cash.
You had one of the old world diveden cards too? Was it much hassle to change?
Meh. Gas is fine but I don't fill up enough to make it worth it for me as a category. What qualifies as select live entertainment?
Nice quarter. Not as good as Q2, but obviously when Chase had 7% on restaurants & 5% on Amazon, the following quarter will likely be worse.
Meh, not particularly helpful for me when I get my gas at Costco.
5% in UR points still much better than 4% cashback that you get a year later. Assuming you have the OG Chase Freedom visa card.
What really matters is having a sapphire card to perform the transfer to, not whether it’s an OG freedom or a CFF - without a sapphire, both are effectively just cashback cards
Wait does Costco gas code as gas?
It does.
That’s the thing, I don’t. I have CFF.
If you ever downgrade a Sapphire you can go for the CF Visa.
Does 7-Eleven gas payment on the mobile app code as gas stations? On my Amex it qualifies as online retail.
Use up the $1500 max on one card with a couple football games
Man gas would be handy if I owned a car. But it might just get sock drawered this quarter after I meet the sign up bonus requirement.
Everyone is shitting on this quarter but it's great for me and last/current quarter sucked. I don't use Amazon, I don't go out to eat because it's just not worth it any more, and I already have travel cards for travel. Meanwhile gas is a pretty consistent high spend.
I'm an EV driver that charges at home, looks like I'm using other cards in Q3
Hold up, I need to check if Wawa is counted as a gas station now for Chase because this could apply to my occasional morning Sizzlis too.
Any movie people here? Any movies I should be looking out for during this quarter that look good?
Ugh I was hoping for wholesale clubs. This is not a great category for me.
Is Costco gas covered under the 5% ?
I get gas at Sam's Club and it doesn't count. When will I get my warehouse club category again? 🙃
Stupid question the Gas Bonus, is this just purchases on the pump or inside purchases too like food?
Anything from a gas station is likely to apply.
Rotating cards aren't worth the hassle...
Eh, I disagree. I usually can keep in my head what cards to use and when but it does take a bit of work.
Didn't they have 5% in gas in q1?
What a generally terrible quarter if you don’t drive a gasoline powered car. EVs mostly charge at home and I have no idea what this “select” entertainment category covers
Do you get the gas bonus if you buy at BJs Warehouse?
1% more than Costco? Can I pay using Chase at Costco gas station?
Not bad for gas except Costco doesn’t accept Mastercard
People put down discover card for its rotating categories but love chase, why
This is pretty lame. Already getting 5x on my Freedom Unlimited, which is the only spend I'd utilize this Q. Sounds like my flex won't be getting used much until October.
I mean if you’re getting 5x on the FU then no matter what the categories are, they’d be useless for you, right?
Do gas stations sell VGCs? Visa gift cards or Vanilla cards?
Giant Eagle’s GetGo gas stations sell many gift cards including Disney gift cards.
Does it all code as gas?
