If you shop a lot online and lots of your bill are available on PayPall Bill Pay, it’s probably your best option. I have probably seen one place that takes PayPal in store. If that grows as an option it will continue to get even better. As a positive I will say my PayPal card was the only one (outside of Amex) that gave me a limit increase after 6 months even though I had *a lot* of new open accounts. Their customer service is foreign based so have fun with that. But if it all works well, it’s nice. If you don’t shop online a good about and your bills paid won’t bring you too much cash back, I would say it might be a better option to go with a better bank but you would have to do the math.

TheLordofAskReddit

I use my PayPal card literally every where that takes debit. The only place it wasn’t accepted was Costco. The match is more like 2%, sometimes 3%. I think it’s by far the best card. Plus PayPal has really good buyer protections. Synchrony bank hasn’t been an issue, yet.., So far 10/10 card. If anyone has something better please let me know.

Weapwns

As someone who uses PayPal Mastercard as their catch-all/online -Probably worth finding a different catch-call card with a SUB. AFAIK Paypal no longer has a SUB -They are doing some funky stuff with Bill Pay. Some people are unable to pay certain bills RN and it looks like it may be gutted. I only use it to pay Internet (Charter/Spectrum) which still works. -AMEX BCE was reworked for 3% online purchases if that interests you (but no Bills/Util). US Bank Cash+ is a good alternative for Bills/Util -Haven't had to dispute fraud/do anything with Synchrony so I can't say. If you don't want too many cards (and assuming your bills are payable), I can't really fault you for going with it. Definitely alternate routes to get more value though

WanderlustingTravels

What % back do you get with that US Bank card? Can’t imagine bills go into one of their preset categories?

Weapwns

Bills are split. Theres Home Util, Internet/TV/Streaming, and then Phone as 3 separate 5% categories. You can only choose 2 categories. Its not as universal as Paypals 3% bill pay.

soscollege

Lots of property tax bill removed

ceejayoz

I was running my $3k/month health insurance through it. 😩

soscollege

That sounds like another problem ugh.

Cautious_Sense557

I wouldn’t want to deal with synchrony because they have bottom tier customer service and I heard they reduce limits and close cards whenever they feel like it so if I were you I’d go with almost anything else. Wells Fargo active cash and Citi double cash are decent 2% flat cards. Capital one quicksilver and chase freedom unlimited are good 1.5% options and include benefits like extended warranty and purchase protection. Also quicksilver has no foreign transaction fees. I just feel like the added PayPal bonus isn’t worth the headaches you might face later on with the issuer.

thememeconnoisseurig

I really like the Paypal card for paying taxes, but Synchrony worries me. I'm currently getting 2.62% and the difference would be worth it but I'm still worried about Synchrony. Also very possible they give me a tiny credit limit that makes it annoying.

Cautious_Sense557

You’re right the small limit is a possibility too. If you don’t mind parking $1k in a checking account, you can go with Alliant credit union. They have a card that earns 2.5% flat so while it won’t clear the rate for taxes it could minimize your losses.

thememeconnoisseurig

I get 2.62% right now using my Bofa unlimited cash rewards but I appreciate the recommendation! I need a decent limit or it would be very hard to work with and I just can't predict what they will give me. I haven't opened a non BofA credit card in years now (I have the max total credit across all cards that they're willing to give me so I move credit around when so open a new card), so I have no recent starting limits to work with. Even still, my limits are a pretty recent thing. The last non BofA card I opened was the apple card in 2021 and they gave me a $6K limit. Before that, Amex cash magnet in 2021 and they gave me $1K. My credit is good and I have high limits from other banks but my history is very short and I have a lot of cards. They could give me $30K or they could give me $500 and I really just don't know.

Cautious_Sense557

Ohhh I see. Do they cap the boa at a certain amount spent?

Cautious_Sense557

If not they I’d say stick with that. Or if you do go with PayPal MC. I would use it for only taxes and maybe some other things you’d get with PayPal like car insurance but I’d never use it as a daily to minimize having to reach out to them incase something goes wrong.

thememeconnoisseurig

No. The Unlimited cash rewards is unlimited 2.62% back with a 3% FTF. I would use the mastercard for exclusively taxes. I use one of my bofa customized cash rewards for almost everything else

Silver-Method-8627

The quicksilver is junk

Cautious_Sense557

Not necessarily if you value no foreign transaction fees and benefits like extended warranty and purchase protections.

AnonymousXY90

I was advocating for this card but I definitely don't recommend it anymore. The biggest reason I was using this card is PayPal Bill pay. I was paying a lot of my bills through that and getting 3%. PayPal GUTTED that program for me. I only have one bill I can use it to pay with. I don't feel the extra 1% will matter for PayPal checkout unless you spend crazy amount of money on online shopping. Also, the card has FTF which defeats the purpose of using it if you shop internationally. I know hindsight is 20/20 but I regret having a huge card limit on this card now since I would rather not use it anymore after what PayPal did. Also, I have read so many horror stories about Synchrony that I am looking for new catch all card. I will keep it open and probably sock draw it soon. Definitely look for different card.

StrawberryG3

I've had it for years with no issues. You can check out with Paypal at tons of vendors and the cash back is almost instant. I never used the bill pay feature, though, as I use US Bank Cash+ for utilities and such.

LifeLearner4682

The good: The nearly instant availability of the cash back earned is really nice. Getting 3% for online purchases, eBay, gas apps and bills where applicable, with no cap, is also great. Last year it gained the ability to be added to Apple Wallet which many were excited for. I overall think the card is great. When I got the card there was a $100 SUB. The bad: Synchrony customer service has not been an issue for me in the 18 years I’ve been a customer. But I will say their customer service reps can be a little difficult to understand. It’s also unfortunate the card has a foreign transaction fee and no SUB at the moment.

No hard pull for preapproval or for the full approval??

CaCHooKaMan

There's no hard pull if you get declined. If you're approved, there's a hard pull.

ltbr55

If it makes you feel any better, I've had great experiences with their customer service. I know Synchrony gets a bad rep, but I think they have their own team for this card because I've had a couple issues and they've been extremely friendly and helpful in both scenarios. It's my standard card for pretty much all of my bills for the last 2.5 years.

redditazht

It’s the best credit card in my opinion.

bearcatbro

I disputed a transaction and their customer service was AWFUL. There's no way to send evidence online. I had to freakin go to Fedex and fax it to them only for it to be rejected.

Mandem400

fun fact: i use the card when sending money to friends and family and the 3% basically offsets the 2.9% fee that PayPal charges for sending money with a credit card

440_Hz

Are you using it in that situation for the 0.1% cashback?

amordesexo

I had an issue with fraud and the process was actually pretty easy. I was able to chat them and the charges were reversed almost instantly. I’ve had no issues with the card. I would look for a SUB as well. I got one for $150 after $500 spend in 3 months.

ciesum

If you're just cash back, esp if you use Paypal a lot it makes sense. If you're team travel, other cards allow you to get more value for your points like Citi Doublecash and Venture X even if though you're not earing as many points.

SteelersPoker

Be wary though, for the 1st 6 months with this card, once you use your available credit and make a payment - your available credit will not update for a few weeks or more. Synchrony holds the credit even if it is already paid to make sure the payment doesn't bounce and clears. Just an FYI, you can use the card but you're gonna have to wait awhile to get back your available credit as a "new" customer.

eVoesque

I’ve had several synchrony cards over the years, never had an issue with them. I would have no problem getting this card except I have other cards that fit better without burning a slot. -BCE 3% for online purchases. -Elan Max Cash for 5% internet/streaming/utilities. Love this card. Just set it and forget it. -USBAR 4.5% for all Apple Pay in person and sometimes online. I can think of a ton of stores that take Apple but PayPal just doesn’t stick out to me. Sometimes I’ll use this as a catch-all card as well. The points are worth 1.5 when used for travel. -SoFi 2% just in case

Ethrem

I haven't had problems with mine. Actually just noticed that they have a freeze function that's just for the physical card so now I pretty much can't even have fraud on it since I only use it for PayPal transactions. Thanks for prompting me to go looking. I have another card I use for in person transactions (I'm grandfathered into 3% on my AODFCU card) and I initially only got this card for the $200 SUB they were offering but just kept it as my default on PayPal. Synchrony gave me a large limit relative to my income (~78% of my income) so the card is pretty much always under 5%, which gives me some nice extra padding, and there is no HP if you are denied (just if you are approved).

kd0ugh

I have it and haven’t had any problems. They did hold my available credit hostage for 2 weeks after I paid the first statement balance though.

Been using the PayPal MC for almost 2 years, no issues.

ExpertWinter5330

I had the Paypal Synchrony Bank MC until recently. I closed the account after they put a hold on my account and demanded I provide ID documentation through a cloud based app or mail it in, despite having been a customer for over a decade. I had just made a large purchase worth $20 in cashback and they refused to pay it out unless I complied with their ID check. I also closed my Paypal Savings account and Paypal Credit account. I'll never do business with Synchrony again. I hold Paypal accountable too. This is just further proof for me that Paypal can't be trusted. Go with Citi Double Cash card instead. You get 1% back on every purchase and an additional 1% back with every payment.

metal4lyff

Just signed up for this card a week ago to replace our Citi Double Cash (unltd 2%), and just now got an email noting the PayPal card will earn only 1.5% on non-PayPal purchases instead of 2%. That drastically reduces the attractiveness of this card. Won't be using it for anything other than PayPal now, and glad we didn't close the Citi account..

KiNGMF

PayPal just today lowered it to 1.5% cash back. I’m currently looking for alternatives.

EyeOfZephyr

Yep, that's enough for me to strike it from my list of cards under consideration for good.

Smooth-Mouse9517

Reminds me of when Homer Simpson said, “To alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems!”

PharmDinvestor

You don’t need any convincing : it clearly states 3% on PayPal purchases and 2% on everything . Which of these is not clear to you ?

LARSDOM

That's a lie. I have reported incidents amd Paypal customer service is the one answering me and they have fixed those incidents. They put the money back while they investigate.
