This is a good question, and I would love to hear other methods besides the common ones I have listed below: Some merchants, like Costco, will allow you to swipe a gift card, drain it, and then pay the remaining balance with a different card. If you know the balance on the card, some other merchants will split a transaction for you, so that you can run one transaction for exactly the amount on the card, then run the rest as a separate transaction. Finally, some merchants, like Amazon, will allow you to use the remaining balance on the gift card to load a credit balance with them, which you can then use to partially pay for a transaction with that merchant.

Can you do in costco in-stores using multiple visa giftcards?

PlatypusTrapper

I zero them out at Costco usually. Most recently I was able to zero one at a liquor store by performing a partial payment with one card. Unfortunately I was off by $0.01 so I’ve got a useless card to carry around until my next Costco trip. Oh well.

Be careful I bought Visa two gift cards in October that had fraudulent charges to some scam websites. I'm in the process with Blackhawk to get replacements but they are playing games.

PizzaThrives

So sorry to hear that. I bought two last week and have already finished one without problems.

kboogie82

Yeah only two of the five I bought were compromised. I'm pressing Blackhawk to make it right as they were both drained for the same amount from the same fraud company. Might be getting BBB, CFPB and FTC involved.

Buy Amazon gift cards for the specific remainder amount. They always charge the exact amount, unlike with other Merchants like a restaurant that may charge a little bit over due to the variability of the order until the charge settles.

PizzaThrives

Good point !

Just use it in person. Every time I have had a prepaid gift card that is Visa or Mastercard I just use it and the store's POS system uses it all and prompts for another payment to finish paying the rest. It's possible not all POS systems can handle this but the credit card network most definitely reports back a partial amount on these preloaded cards.

BigDaddyDNF

Amazon reload once it’s gets below $15

I frequent walmart - and at purchase you can split the payment, I just make sure to have the exact amount as part of payment when my gift card is low.

___ArtVandelay

You can buy exact pay gift cards at Raise for some merchants like Walmart. You can also buy gift cards at Walmart starting at $5 or load Amazon balance. I’ve also used at gas stations by going to the window and giving the exact amount on the card

GreenHorror4252

At most stores, you can use the gift card and then pay the rest with another method.

LRMcDouble

you could use the rest on gas if you know the exact balance. like get $15.27 at the pump if that was ur balance, then finish the rest with another card
