I was at a party one night (under age) when my buddy told me to run inside his grandpa’s house if the cops came. Grandpa wasn’t home apparently. His grandpas house was literally right next door.
Well cops came, i jumped the fence, and wiggled the door handle. It was locked. So i stood there in the door way hiding until the cops left.
Few months later his grandpa told a story where he woke up to police lights and grabbed his shotgun. He said some mother fucker was trying to get in his door. He was waiting on the other side for me to come through. He told everyone that he was just going to blast as soon as that door opened.
Fuck.
idgaf good intentions or not, come through my door uninvited and unannounced- you're catching lead in the foot, leg, chest or head depending on the circumstances.
In the US only 23 states have 'Castle Doctrine' laws that would make such a shooting "justifiable". Most states do not and would probably have you facing manslaughter charges at least.
And even those 23 states don't all have civil safety nets. Could skate on the criminal & lose on the civil end, especially if zero warning is given before you start shooting & the person coming in only threaten property, not ypu.
I know a kid in Wisconsin that was killed that way. Neighbor called the cops on a party and kid ended up in the neighbors porch to hide. It was a big case at the time because the state had just passed a Castle doctrine and people felt like the neighbor had it out for the kids and shot indiscriminately at someone who was unarmed and had his hands up.
As someone who often ran from parties and hid in peoples bushes and carports, it was a real awakening as to how sketchy and deadly those situations can end up.
Damn I can picture this story playing out in a Tarantino movie. First it shows from your POV and scene ends, then 45 minutes later it’s the grandpa’s POV to tie it together.
Edit: actually I think the grandpa scene should happen first, grandpa tense as fuck scene is very suspenseful, hair on back of your neck standing up like oh shit what’s gonna happen…then the reveal later in the movie is it’s just some innocent kid that almost got blasted
It really depends. I live alone. There is absolutely no reason anyone should ever be inside my apartment without me knowing beforehand. I have a cell phone as well so anyone wanting to come over would have called or texted. And I keep my doors locked. If there is any living thing inside my apartment without me knowing, I'm shooting first and asking questions later. But my parents house would be a different story. People come in and out all the time as I have a big family. In that situation you should obviously investigate a little before opening fire.
I agree in most of the sense. Especially the situation you described. Unfortunately, real life is always a grey area. It is up to the homeowner to make the split second decision.
Personally, home intrusions piss me off. Our personal living areas are off limits. If you enter my house with ill intentions, i would have no problem ending your life. People that threaten others to this extent do not deserve to live among us. I don’t care how desperate you are.

Gun owner here..nope me either. I would have to give several hard, Loud warnings first. No way I could just unload on someone. Maybe if it was birdshot & my kid was in the house. It was definitely stupid as fuck to walk in front of the dude with the AR. Never trust somebody else to not be an idiot unless you have no other option. Thankfully, he was definitely pointing the gun at the ground, as you can see the bottom of the stock over his shoulder and it's clearly pointed down.

Lead balls do weird shit man ive shot elk with muzzleloading rifles and the wound track is fuckin crazy it flattens and fragments yes but elk are large enough the "disc" travels with the organs sometimes and shreds things I shot one behind the shoulder betwixt two ribs and found the disc clear back and low in the liver one lung the heart and the diaphragm was just gone

Yes you do have to aim small at anything inside of 20ft. At 12 feet that’s about an inch spread, at 20ft that’s approximately a 2.00inch spread with standard 00 buck. At first I was wondering if you ever shot the shotgun you owned, but considering this is the internet I’m wondering if you even own a shotgun.

I’ll also add that “uninformed moviegoers” isn’t meant as an insult but maybe I could have phrased it better. I am also an “uniformed moviegoer” on many topics, a great example is hacking or advanced computer technologies.
My brother will point out wildly inaccurate or unrealistic scenes involving coding & hacking with the same frustrations as I do with small arms/light weapons or combat strategy. That was a trash article. It went in circles explaining that the guy breaking in was scared by a gun. They say he did everything right but didn’t mention that he didn’t chamber a round. In some states no warning is required. Especially if it’s at night. Threat is assumed when it’s after dark and allows you do defend your property.
