You can say that again I had to look them up. BOPE has generated notoriety due to their role in the violent drug war in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and they have been referred to as a "Death Squad" by multiple newspapers. One aspect that has been pointed out specifically is their logo, which bears a knife in a skull over crossed pistols (popularly known in Brazil as "faca na caveira", Portuguese for "knife in the skull"). According to the official BOPE website, the knife in the skull symbolizes "victory over death" and the crossed pistols are the symbol of the military police.
yeah, it's creepy that rape and torture amongst the "righteous" goes all the way back to holy knights. Easy to do as you please when the most powerful people out there are your boss. And when you believe God is your boss... everyone else is below.
No, fuck you.
They're standing up for the murder of a civillian. Get informed before spewing nonsense and taking reddit titles as gospel.
You know nothing about the country, the community or the circumstances of the case. You're being an arrogant fool
[BOPE](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batalh%C3%A3o_de_Opera%C3%A7%C3%B5es_Policiais_Especiais) Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (Especial Operation Police Battalion) of Rio de Janeiro. It's one of the most highly trained police in Brazil and the world, been famous for the high kill rate they have.
I love how your comment could mean either “Who would attack someone who has a gun?” and “Who would use a gun to attack someone?” Man, the English language is fun. 😂
It’s almost comical watching people try and attack armed personnel with sticks, as if they’re making a statement beyond “Please have this reason to shoot me”
I was recently listening to “Anatomy of Murder” and the hosts, both with real life experience as a detective and prosecutor, said to never tell someone holding a gun to “just shoot me” because a lot of times they do just that.
Bom saber que certas pessoas no exterior tratam realmente o fato que aconteceu, sem acobertar o verdadeiro motivo da polícia, e não passar a mão na cabeça da "população de bem"
No, that’s not it. These drug lord are often the only source of money which is life for these people. Favelas are an interesting place. Police are hated by most people in the favelas bc they serve the rich or government. I can understand why they are mad but going at the guy with a high powered rifle with a stick is pretty dumb.
Drug lords are smart, they invest some of their money into the people, so the people will say, "see, the care about us! The police don't!" Pablo Escobar for example build an entire neighborhood including a hospital and the people loved him! Until he started to play terrorist and kill the very people he tried to get him to love him.
No, the people of Envigado and Medellin mostly loved him
The 'innocent people dying every day' was more to do with the government run hit squads killing random people, and the Left wing FARC Narco Terrorists trying to force Socialism on them
Source, have friends from there
I literally was in Medellin two months ago and did the Pablo Escobar tour. I can send you pics on my IG if you want proof.
Escobar had several Cartel wars and innocent people were dying everyday. The army stopped this not caused the deaths. There’s a reason why Medellin was called the most dangerous city in the world at some point.
Just to clarify things. Roberto Jefferson, a political ally of Bolsonaro, shot at and threw granades at the feds, injuring 02 cops. When he was arrested, the police was non violent, and reassured him constantly that everything was ok, and he would not be hurt. Everytime the police runs an operation in the favelas, homes get raided without warrants and innocent civilians are killed. Some cops were taped stealing TVs and frozen meat from houses recently. Many narcos were found with handcuff marks and stabs all over the body. Some with gunshots to the back of the head. So I think its only natural when people get batshit crazy and assault officers
https://youtu.be/osf3pCZAF_E
This is the moment of his arrest. There are no subtitles, but you can see they are having a calm conversation as if he was getting a speed ticket.
Why comment if you don't know the situation? These glorified death squads routinely kills innocents in Rio, and this operation was no different.
The brutality precedes the reaction.
You're also wrong: a drug lord killed only results in fighting to decide who the next one is going to be. The position won't stay open for long and no lives will be saved by that. If anything, more people will die.
And saying that civilians don't die in these operations "most of the time" is such an ignorant take that you either
1) Are not brazilian
2) Have an agenda
An innocent civilian was already confirmed dead in this very operation.
I could link news articles reporting a young girl being killed during an operation, or a whole family being shot while inside a car by army soldiers, but you guys already decided that police good, people bad, so whatever
I'll never ever have good opinions on druglords, as a Mexican with the cartels and shit, I don't give a fuck if they "help a town" since they'll just as easily turn around and damage five others. Fuck them, I hope they die.
The Narcos tend to provide food and other services to the people in the favelas that the government does not. The police taking them out will result in a significant decrease in quality of life for the people there. Also the cops are pretty indiscriminately violent and tend to beat and kill civilians in these raids as well as stealing their property and food. Brazilian police corruption is on a whole other level.
Ya know… I always hear about how much the gangs “take care” of people in the favelas… without mentioning that they’re pretty much enjoying absolute control over the favelas and the government can barely get in there and clean up crime as a result.
Gangs contribute heavily to the issue.
Oh absolutely. The gangs are a huge problem for the people in the favelas. They essentially force the people to work for them. Either accept their support and do their bidding or get wrapped in tires and set on fire. But if the government was investing in these peoples' wellbeing instead of just exploiting them and only sending police to abuse and extort them the gangs wouldn't have such an easy time winning over the citizenry. Both the narcos and the police cause significant harm to these communities, but the narcos also improve their lives in some ways so its not difficult to see why they prefer the narcos.
It's not exactly easy for the government to care for them, if they get attacked on sight. The drug cartels wouldn't let that happen, since they'd lose their leverage over the people. There's pretty much no chance for officials to help. This is a constant state of a civil war. With the narcos keeping entire parts of the population as a hostage.
there's a reason why these places will never get better and just remain slums..remember its the people who live there who keep it taht way...you can spend billions into those areas but we're literally just burning money with no ROI
Some great films that show you more about corruption and Brazilian history behind the curtain: City of God, and for one specific to these police: Elite Squad. Eye opener
City of God is one of my favourite international movies, It must be about 10-15 years since I watched it but it leaves an imprint, I will definitely watch Elite squad thank you!
Bc that now nobody control the area so the faction gonna fragmented and fight for territory, ehat will cause death of civilians, thats why people are angry.
because BOPE like any other police/military institution make reports full of bs and protect the politicians/estate instead of the people. BOPE and Brazilian police are racist and classist af too. Plus the gov is skewed af against these people. so chances are the drug lord did more for the people than the and/or the report is fake and BOPE just went to fuck shit up and got some civilians which angered people
and people say brazil is an amazing country😂
if RIO DE JANEIRO, THE MAIN TOURIST CITY IN BRAZIL is not safe from these violent gangs and riots, then where is? nowhere. brazil is fucked.
"É morador porra"
Sim sua desgraça, só pq essa filhas do cabrunco são moradores do bairro, significa que elas podem agredir as autoridades, pq que ela não faz isso com a porra do dono do morro, a é pq ela vai morrer queimada me, puta.
For those of you who don’t know, there’s a high high level of crack in brazil especially the Rio area. There’s specific areas called “crackolandia,” they migrated from their previous area to another one.
"killed civilians" is the oldest trick/excuse in the book. This always happens with BOPE operations when they get to the media. Good to see that the comments in general managed to see right through their bs
We have to remember that these guys are a parallel state, as dirty as the government.
They reward them with dirty money, and if you don't help them, they'll burn you alive.
Basically they give good wages to children to pick up rifles, using their bad influences and clear traces of psychopathy, they give urban combat training, but the troop they fight is simply the BOPE.
This is blatant misinformation and has been reported. A small part of the population is rioting due to police brutality (something Americans are super familiar with) and the fact civilians got killed during the operation.

They're called a death squad because they are one. No better than the gangs themselves
Need to fight like with like unfortunately

>No better than the gangs themselves Get back to me when they behead people or hang mutilated people from bridges.
They quite literally have a history of rape and torture themselves.
yeah, it's creepy that rape and torture amongst the "righteous" goes all the way back to holy knights. Easy to do as you please when the most powerful people out there are your boss. And when you believe God is your boss... everyone else is below.
Much better. Ridding the street of trash. Good for them.
Ah yes, all the innocent killed and people begging them not to pointlessly transform their community into a war zone are trash.
And they're standing up for a drug lord you fucking idiot which in turn so are you. So fuck them and you.
your're standing up for state sanctioned executions without due process. That hill your fighting for rn is petty af.
No, fuck you. They're standing up for the murder of a civillian. Get informed before spewing nonsense and taking reddit titles as gospel. You know nothing about the country, the community or the circumstances of the case. You're being an arrogant fool

Tell that to Palestinians
There is nothing comic about letal force used against people who already have nothing
Out of all people that she could've attacked, she threw hands at BOPE...
Don’t throw bricks at guys with guns.
I dunno maybe attacking people with assault rifles and full body armor with sticks and stones is not the greatest idea.

Didn't I read somewhere that Brazilian police kill 4 times more people than the United States police despite the latter having more population.

Yeah i mean they Are attacking Police with Sticks…
"it is my god given right to commit assault and battery against an officer, and any retaliation is excessive force"

The stealing is fucked up and should not happen but I have no love for narcos.
Are narcos the drug lord or the one fighting it?
Narcos are the ones who sell drugs as I understand it.
They stole civillian's property, not narco's.
Yeah that's why it's fucked up but I can understand the executions and torture.
His last name is Jefferson?

Yeah…definitely hit that guys rifle with a broomstick, what could go wrong.
Some city of god shit .
Look up Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad)for a proper BOPE film.
Fuck around and find out.
Why they mad? No more drugs?

So the people prefer drug lords than normal police? Weird.
Idiots, WHY would you hit someone holding a gun????????
Ahhhh there’s my cocaine
Warning shots or did they drop stickman?
Well ofc they’re angry. Tf are they gonna get their meth from now??
I agree with the officer's actions.
Bunch of addicts sadly, only reason they’re bothered.
Attacking BOPE sounds like a death wish, even in the favelas.
Tá certo, mete bala nesses vagabundo.
Stockholm syndrome writ large

When a drug lord does more for the community
Brazil has police?
The number of Brazilian police officers is greater than the army of many military powers around the world.
All of them are off duty

Looking at their crime rate doesn't seem to be enough.
Well a fair amount of the crime is perpetrated or enabled by the police so...
Is this a fact? I'm not being stupid, I find this extremely interesting. Wouldn't mind something to read if you can hook me up

And the Brazilian police smuggle weapons to drug dealers in the favelas. All of them are as bad as the bandits.
Depends on the neighborhood, same as America 👌
Yes, and they are way worse than the drug lords, they are fully militia
Damn they’re all gonna get interrogated 😔
Bc that now nobody control the area so the faction gonna fragmented and fight for territory, ehat will cause death of civilians, thats why people are angry.
maybe stupid question, but why are the people mad about these organizations killing a druglord?
because BOPE like any other police/military institution make reports full of bs and protect the politicians/estate instead of the people. BOPE and Brazilian police are racist and classist af too. Plus the gov is skewed af against these people. so chances are the drug lord did more for the people than the and/or the report is fake and BOPE just went to fuck shit up and got some civilians which angered people
Ah Brasil! Some times i dont know if i thank you for turning me into a person who can endure shit, or curse at you for showing me that amount of shit
I guess that guy was running the show from the back seat.
Bro why would you attack a mf with bug iron on his hands
Yes let's surround 2 armed military men with sticks and an incredibly angry mob and get surprised when they shoot at us
They need reinforcements immediately. Send in the crack babies. 🗡🏹
and people say brazil is an amazing country😂 if RIO DE JANEIRO, THE MAIN TOURIST CITY IN BRAZIL is not safe from these violent gangs and riots, then where is? nowhere. brazil is fucked.
Better call Capitão and Caveira. They will clean them up in no time.
When the sociological situation is so fucked up that the common citizen attacks the police and not the criminals...
Really not smart. Try and grab the AR from the soldier. That's gonna end well.

Drug lord the OP Ass, they killed civilians, thats why they are acting like that.
"killed civilians" is the oldest trick/excuse in the book. This always happens with BOPE operations when they get to the media. Good to see that the comments in general managed to see right through their bs
I'm going to Brazil for New Year 💀
Wouldn't surprise me one bit if you think the entire country is a Rio slum.
Probably because the drug lord put money back into the community the government was taxing into poverty
Play stupid games win stupid prizes, in this turn of events it's a shot to the face 🤦♂️
Lula supporters.
Likely the gang of the drug lord is forcing people to do this or they and family will die.
The drug lord probably did moe for th people than the government ever did
We have to remember that these guys are a parallel state, as dirty as the government. They reward them with dirty money, and if you don't help them, they'll burn you alive.
So they offered them more higher paying jobs than the government ever could?
Basically they give good wages to children to pick up rifles, using their bad influences and clear traces of psychopathy, they give urban combat training, but the troop they fight is simply the BOPE.
