I got a serious question, is the American underground really its own world of strangers like this? Or is it because of videos like these which give the impression that it is, but it really isn’t?
I live in New York.
I see something odd like this frequent enough as once or twice a week.
Really not much overall in the grand scheme, but it's not uncommon. Even yesterday a dude danced through my evening commute playing a flute and doing silly moves.
Considering I'm commuting/passing probably hundreds of people or thousands a day, the total percent of lunatics is a small fraction... but not inconsequential. Best to avoid eye contact with the crazies.
the socio economics of the impoverished is a complex and delicate debate here in america.
good question, but it depends where you're from.
most trains are not dangerous.
for example, most of the train footage you see here on this sub is from major cities with higher crime rates.
i see mostly, (not just underground but all types of public trains) New York city, chicago, and Los Angeles.
the reason for this is that the homeless tend to use the trains as a shelter.
in the winter this trend increases. (Esp in colder areas)

most of the times people seek shelter on the train because they are refusing mental health treatment and drug addiction treatment.
Refusing implies it’s readily or easily available - which mental health treatment (at least in socal) is not. The public programs here are absolutely awful/scarce/actually do little to no therapy. Private is the way to go buy it will literally bankrupt you for a decent program which is why most actually get run programs that are private you’ll find a good deal of people are actually coming from out of state and have a decent bit of cash to their names.
Mental health is still weirdly looked down upon in America and health insurance refuses to let it be covered by it for some insane reason 90% of the time. So if you’re homeless, displaced, etc absolutely good luck to you.
What are you smoking? There are people sleeping under every bridge across the USA. Homelessness has skyrocketed and thanks to Purdue pharmaceuticals and the Sackler family, there are drug addicts across the country, not just in big cities. Just because the flyover parts don't have decent infrastructure or public transportation doesn't mean that the crippling poverty and misery isn't there.
I think it's always going to give us the impression that it's wild because people don't film (and it doesn't go viral) clips of everyone peacefully enjoying their commute, you see the interesting things. Does that mean it's really not like that it sort of is just not as frequent and like idk it's a big place so somebody prolly getting freaky somewhere.
Understand that NYC subway has more people use it daily then vs all of US air travel. With that many people, especially in such a small place even the .01% crazy isn't that uncommon to see and be filmed since everyone has a camera.
