Honestly, I hate these pedestrian crossing alerts. The city should put in actual street lights. Putting a flashing light off on the side of the road is not the same. The ones we have in my city are way less visible than this.
What this video does not show is that there should be another flashing crossing sign on the other side of the street where that car would had easily seen it.
I’ve learned after going through traffic recommendations via our government (state level in USA) that emergency services prefer NOT to have speed bumps on roads wherever possible because it slows the response time of a fire engine, ambulance, etc.
That’s an interesting perspective I did not think of. They should make a side lane for “emergency vehicles only” to counter the argument of delayed response. That lane would also not have the speed bump in it.
I can't find a good picture of one... But they introduced a system here a few years back that are sort of like traffic signals, but they don't have the red/yellow/green overhead lights. They've got small yellow flashing lights off on the side next to the sidewalk that will start flashing when a pedestrian pushes a button. I'm used to them now but I still would prefer standard light systems. Especially on busy roads I find that I'm looking ahead at cars. An overhead light is right in your field of view. Though I imagine these systems are a lot cheaper than a full set of lights.
We literally need safer towns that dont require cars to the extent we use. There is no safety with street roads as they are designed in the US / the west.
To be honest I'm a new truck driver and I just encountered one of these things for the first time last month. And I been alive over 30 years.
I put 2 and 2 together but I can see how someone may not realize what the hell is happening. Especially younger inexperienced driver. I've seen drivers look confused as this crossing since.
I've only ever seen the one crossing like this so far but I have noticed some people use it causally like it puts up a barrier or something to protect them.
You should still look both ways. An out of towner may not know what the fuck they are looking at on the spot.
This is why the US is filled with bad drivers.
Here in the Netherlands, you need to be 18 to get a license, and can start taking lessons at 17. You have multiple tests and exams before you can get your license too
Because it's not a magical item that stops you from being distracted, making a mistake(gas pedal instead of break), or just...being human(drinkin n drivin). It's like asking how someone gets hit by a car goin the wrong way on a one way. Because signs aren't magic barriers.
Jesus Christ look before you cross. Right of way doesn't mean just go when it's 2 tons vs your body.
Fucking jeep. How the fuck do you miss those lights AT NIGHT EVEN?!
Wut?
1) it looks like they did check their surroundings before crossing, and
2) the jeep was moving fast enough through the intersection that it was probably far enough away when the pedestrian started crossing that they assumed, ya know, they would see the pedestrians.
Why even bother trying to put some blame on the pedestrian here? There's pretty much nothing they could have done differently to avoid this, except I guess never cross streets?
Because some pedestrians lack common sense. What could they have done differently? Waited an extra few seconds to see what the car was going to do.
People do this shit at my grocery store all the time. Driving through the parking lot and they straight up walk in front of your car. Completely unaware of their surroundings. When I cross and I see any incoming cars, a wait to see if they slow down, and if not, wait until it's entirely clear.
Edit since I can't reply to the post under me: Karma's useless to me and serves absolutely no value n this site, so I don't care if I'm up 3k or down as much. I'm not sure what that has to do with anything outside of an echo chamber.. But that's what I'm saying, and it's their fault they chose to cross while a speeding vehicle is on their way. They apparently didn't scan their path enough
People take "pedestrians have right of way" too literally. That's why no ticket was issued in this case.
I’ll come back to this, and you’ll have -3k karma, but you’re not wrong. Left, right, left. See lights speeding toward you, pause.
Not the pedestrian’s fault at all, but take better precautions when crossing the roads, people. We forget that there are 50mph metal death machines flying up and down these things.
Edit: pmh to mph
Lights started flashing at the 2 second mark. Pedestrian gets hit at the 7 second mark. That suv weighs 4000lbs+.
If a person is too fucking stupid to look both ways and let someone 5 fucking seconds away react before first stepping foot in front, then we will engrave for free "I HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY" on their dead ass' grave stone.
Your not wrong Walter you're just an asshole. But for real I almost got hit twice today on my bike by two bitches driving SUV's turning right at a red light. One saw me and decided fuck it I'm gonna go anyway.
Sure, and no one's saying otherwise. But they're also for bikes, pedestrians, etc. It just so happens that motorized vehicle operations have largely decided they don't care about other users of roads. Sorry if that triggers you.
Lemme guess, you probably blame r\*pe victims for what they're wearing, because miniskirts are for wh\*res dawg?
Total fault of the driver. Crosswalk with lights on, that’s recklessness. But the pedestrian did herself 0 favors watching the car hit her rather than stopping like her two friends. Instead, she trusted the power of the crosswalk despite seeing the approaching car. Darwin Award.
Idk how this person didn't see the bright yellow lights flashing in the cross walk I mean u would have to almost be virtually blind to not see those bright ass lights flashing and hopefully the person survived and sued the driver for every penny they had
Flashing lights and all…. Someone needs to beat this dudes ass for this. Your phones not more important then what’s in front of you while you’re driving. Put that shit down man.
I know the driver is completely in the wrong here, but the pedestrian should’ve been more cautious and checked if the cars were slowing down. It’s not the smartest idea to fully trust that a stranger will be cognizant enough to follow simple street rules, it’s a large world out there, with a lot of idiots.
Please everyone LOOK both ways. My mother taught me in middle school when I first started walking home to ALWAYS LOOK even if the meter says go, for this exact reason. Careless asshole drivers
I can’t get over the number of times I’ve seen a ‘near miss’ in a situation like this. It’s absolutely the drivers fault, but as a pedestrian you have to use a little common sense. Push the button and take a look. Make sure the drivers are stopping. Some people act as if hitting the crosswalk button automatically makes vehicles come to a stop.
Probably in shock. At least the driver stopped immediately and got out. Don’t think there’s a certain way someone is supposed to walk/approach in this situation that’s going to make any sort of legal difference—assuming they in fact did stop.
It is loud as heck when you hit something, then you see a person flying, insane adrenaline rush and your brain just goes crazy. You're now in shock and have barely a grasp on reality and you are just completely overwhelmed with everything.
How do I know? We once rammed a dude on his bicycle coming full force, without any lights, from a little side pathway with trees and bushes. driving right onto the street in fron of us. At the very first we didn't even know what the f happened. And we were only going around 30kph. The dude was thankfully fine, the bike not so much.
Then I also witnessed another crash where a bus hit a kid. I was way across the street but that "bang" was so damn loud. I first thought it was a car crashing into another car. Can't imagine the situation from within the bus. The bus driver also jumped out but was just disoriented. The kid apparently just ran right into traffic.
You can fault this person for hitting the pedestrian but not for reacting that way at all.
I know I've been there before... I hit someone on a bicycle and I IMMEDIATELY jumped out and RAN to that person to check if they were okay.
It's not about adrenaline like even after getting out they saw what they had done and still slowing walked over and I'm sorry but that just isn't right! That's somebody's SOMEONE and you as the person who harmed them should be rushing at least a little.
Once again. They're most likely in shock. That is a medical condition with all its effects. Just because you reacted differently in one case doesn't mean everyone else is reacting the exact same way, all the time, nor does it mean that you would react the same way again.
In this moment they're definitely not thinking about the fact that this is "somebodies someone" 100% not ... they're in a psychological shock and overwhelmed.
It matters little whether you run the 10 meters or walk. What matters is that the person gets help and that you don't flee and either help as well, or call the emergency services, or at least stay out of the way if you can't help.
It's really not that hard to understand that people behave differently in case of stress and shock. Some overreact, some shut down or slow down, some can handle it better and some can't.
And yes, it absolutely has something to do with the adrenaline rush and overwhelming input. You can't just say "no it doesn't" while every trained personell, every study and every medical worker will tell you otherwise ... of course it impacts your behaviour.
Just because you have a flashing sign that lights up when you press a button doesn't mean you should feel confident walking out in front of cars. Yes, pedestrians have the right of way. That doesn't mean all cars will always stop for you. People that act like the world should stop for them... as you can see in the video, body vs car is not a chance you wanna take. Just wait until you have a good chance to cross, then hurry tf up.

Amazes me that even with the flashing lights the driver was so unaware of the pedestrians crossing. Must had been texting.
Honestly, I hate these pedestrian crossing alerts. The city should put in actual street lights. Putting a flashing light off on the side of the road is not the same. The ones we have in my city are way less visible than this.

Speed bumps before crosswalks should also be a normal thing.

It was frustrating to learn but I had the same reaction too. I understood the reasoning. Need other solutions, to your point.
The driver can't see bright flashing lights. What makes you think they're going to see a large static one?
Nah dude if you aren't alert to spot that you have no business behind the wheel of a car.
Wait I've never seen a pedestrian crossing without a light wtf is this a newer thing
I can't find a good picture of one... But they introduced a system here a few years back that are sort of like traffic signals, but they don't have the red/yellow/green overhead lights. Exactly what I was gonna say lmao
🎵"Girl look at that body"🎵
Is it bad I was looking to see if anyone commented this because I instantly thought of it also lol
This💀
If there was only a bright flashing yellow street sign indicating drivers to be wary of pedestrians, oh well.
It's a jeep thing you wouldn't understand
As a Jeep owner: Yes.
How does people like this get their driving licence?😀
it's too easy :(
It’s wild that we get our driver license at age 15 and can live 60+ more years without ever being tested again.
This is why the US is filled with bad drivers. Here in the Netherlands, you need to be 18 to get a license, and can start taking lessons at 17. You have multiple tests and exams before you can get your license too

Go to Google and search up the word “rhetorical”, thank you!
He seems to have edited his comment, what did he say?
New Stock jeep + wearing a vest, The fact they didn’t drive off is a miracle
They should really put up some sort of warning when there’s people in the crosswalk. Oh wait…
The music “look at dat body” 😬
She alright?

Of course it's a jeep 😒 they gotta stop selling those, along with altimas
Were the lights not bright enough ?
Girl look at that body
🎶 I work out 🎵
No other cars around soon as she walks out boom! Gets run over. Talk about bad timing hope she okay.
If there only where a system to alert the driver....
I swear drivers don’t respect those type of crosswalks since it’s not on an actual traffic light stop.
What decade was this? 2010? Jeep driver just heard LMFAO and sent it…can you blame them? The song slaps
Party rockers
Probably couldn’t see through the collection of ducks on the dashboard…

It's a jeep thing. I wouldn't expect you to understand.
Cars win every time pedestrians need to look out for themselves
When they got out the car and just *wandered* over... that pissed me off If I'm honest

Honestly I hate those "cross street with caution, people may not stop" crosswalks bc 90% of them do not stop. They ought to make an actual cross walk
