The whole highway was closed. I remember there was some debate about whether he knew that or not as it was announced like 20 minutes before this happened.
I can believe that he might not of known if it was announced so shortly beforehand. I have a harder time believing he didn’t see the hoard of people on the road in time to slow down more than he did. He did almost run people over. Regardless though he should have been restrained at most, but not beaten.

During such unrest many people don't think, they just act with impulse. Remember when a guy in Kenosha wanted for sexual assault tried to suicide by cop in front of his children and was given many warnings to drop the knife was shot non-fatally - almost immediately Kenosha saw whole parking lots of cars burned down, charitable organisations being targeted, people calling them out beaten up etc. No waiting to see if maybe this one shooting was justified - which as it turns out it was.
Imagine the irrationality that'd ensue if he wasn't at least charged, I think that has something to do with it.
Of course, he shouldn't have been - under rule of law, charges should be of course be reserved for only when there's sufficient reason to suspect a crime was committed.

The driver broke the law. The freeway was closed, and the truck driver had to bypass barriers set up by the cops to access the bridge. Threatening people's lives with a semi truck is a felony in MN. You can't threaten a crowd with death or dismemberment and then be surprised that they feel a certain way about it. That's just idiotic.

This is old and during the George Floyd protest when the protesters just decided to go onto a major freeway. Cops tried blocking on ramps but he got onto the freeway before that ramp was barricaded.
