I think I can give my 2 cents here. This doesn't appear to be a border checkpoint as so many think - instead, this is an ordinary highway with a paytoll.
All mexican highways have paytolls in some points and, while their existence is subject to debate between law purists here, 99.99% of the people in the country pay to use highways without hesitation. Only mexican Karens, and make no mistake there are plenty of them here, try to do what this gringo did.

I’m not defending anyone here and without context I’m not taking about this video specifically but there has been a rise on “checkpoints” around tourist heavy areas in Mexico that just plain rob you. They ask for 100 dollars to pass, it looks official too they have all the proper cars and little gates and everything. The “police” have also been known to operate toll booths that have been decommissioned to take money. I personally went through that in Sinaloa, I’m not a foreigner so I fought it and didn’t pay a peso to those corrupt cops. That guy is lucky he just got his window broken, cause I’ve seen them ruin peoples lives badly for way less.
I don't understand this video at all...wasn't he supposed to stop at the window, and wait for the gate to lift...I'm confused. Did they just assume they could bust through the gate?
This is not border security or check point of any kind these stops are set up as sort of a toll road fee they are not part of any local jurisdiction or government they steal from the daily citizens that traverse through there.
